The story is bs. She is legally still married. She is legally entitled to his lottery winnings. It's called a " gift to the marriage" in Illinois. I lost everything in divorce in 1990. I mean everything. Lived in my car thru a Chicago winter. I had 3 or 4 woman want marriage after that. I declined. The risk is 100% on the man. She gets rewarded in family court. In Australia, you don't divorce someone. It's a no fault system. You live apart for a year and thats it. Either party can send in the forms. You do not "get" custody of the kids, you continue to share equal custody and after the age of 12, the child can decide who to live with. Property and assets are notionally split 50/50 after 5 years, or if it's less than that, then it's the ratio of assets that each brought to the marriage. These are called Consent Orders and you have to get the Family Court of approve them. You cannot take the kids interstate or out of the country without the other parents written permission. You cannot poison the kids against the other parent. You would get banned from access if you did that. The whole system is centred on what's best for the children. If there are no kids, it's simple. If you can't agree to a split of assets, the Court decides for you. No expensive lawyers.

My response is the same as it was when the roles in the letter were reversed (which, BTW I read earlier today.) She was trying. While she may have gotten some things wrong, she, at least, was doing nice things for her husband in an effort to illicit a response. He made no effort until the marriage was irreparable. What was so important about that trip to Hawaii that your first call had to be to your boss and not to your wife, anyway. Communication is the key in any relationship.
