    As someone who isn’t well versed in k pop, I think everything you said was so true and interesting. And like you said, many celebrities undergo living under a microscope but I never knew k pop idols are subjected to such excessive fascination

    I think as a society, we tend to place attractive men and celebrities on a pedestal. Kpop Idols, and the obsessive attitudes that companies encourage for their own profit, sell an idealized image of artists that fans can desperately grasp onto. Even though the idol is stripped of any personal agency, they uphold the idolized or infantilized image because they profit from the obsessive idol culture.
    I think its really similar to the obsessive attitudes stans had for groups like one direction but perhaps the key difference is that those celebrity artists are eventually able to break away from their commercialized image to create their own "authentic" one. Also, as you mentioned, I doubt the historical infantalization of East Asians is blameless here.
