Super cool and perfect timing. I just picked up a dl360 gen8 at an auction. Notes on the item said it was never in production and was a cold spare. My other servers are repurposed consumer hardware so this is my introduction to commercial hardware.

Best mod for this server is the ILO fan control firmware. I have that exact model and with the modded firmware, it's dead silent and doesn't overheat.

Thank you! I found that the fans were running at 80%+ because of the PCIE cards I installed. This helps and lead me to now know why the extreme fan noise started.

i like the creative use of cement board - the old server are too loud and use too much power but where else are you going to get that much ram capacity - no where - good content and creativity in this one

Except for the Hard Drives, all the cables, Server, Expansion hard drive bays, PCiE and so on was just over $200 even with all the extra RAM. With the dual CPU at this set up it is as fast as i9-9900K for a fraction of the price.

Hey Mr. B, great job on the HP Proliant DL360 Gen8 upgrade! I really enjoyed watching your video and learning about the process of upgrading your server.
I was wondering, though - how did you connect your server to your display? Did you use an VGA-VGA or VGA-HDMI cable or something else? I'm trying to set up a similar setup at home and would love to know what cable you used. Thanks again for sharing your experience!

I actually returned the card as in my case using Linux Mint, the software upgrades caused the mouse to fail. I'm assuming IRQ conflicts. I gave up on those back in the days of early Windows. Bought a MSI Nvidia card with 2G of RAM and it works flawlessly and doesn't need any updates. Not running the card at full capacity I operated the server with it for a couple days and noticed no severe heat problems. But under a load, I'm sure it would warm up.
My fans didn't ramp up. I'm using a Gen9 server and it kept quiet... fans running at 19%... Thanks for taking the time to respond....

    Cool thing,
what kind of NVMe adapter did you use for your 1TB NVMe M.2?

Do you have an external PSU for the other disk outside of the server? Is it connected in anyway with the server or just running on its own?

    • @mrb8308
      @mrb8308  Před 25 dny

Yes, I have a 300w PSU and a 750w APC UPS Battery Backup in the empty space behind the external four bay hot-swap drive setup. Gives the server just enough time to shutdown safely.

HOW OFTEN do you dust your rigs? I see a lot of sawdust ontop of the particle boards.

This is far too load for a Gen 8, Yes it is somewhat loader than a PC but after the iLo initialisation the fans should wind down unless ther is an error condition. The flashing orange led on the front indicates an error.
If you are not using both PSU make ensure that the unused one is pulled out a little so it is disconected otherwise the system will interpret this as a failed PSU and with spinn the fans at full speed

Thanks for this! I got my G8 and only use one PSU and was wondering why the Fans are still crazy :D

Could you elaborate on how to reverse the air flow on the fan... I believe you said that you did this... I'm running a DL360gen9. Please contact me about this...

I took the fan motor off the video card by unscrewing the four screws and put it on upside down. So the fan is blowing out of the case lid door that I drilled to be the size of the fan and lines up once closed. This was done to avoid the fan fighting the much stronger Server fans. Make sure I got the fan direction right before you just take my word for it.

That dual nvme drive card that connects one sata nvme and one pcie nvme. Wondering why you didn't use a dual pcie nvme ssd card? Does that server have bifurcation on it?

These where both repurposed from other PC's that were upgraded. This project was to be to reuse as much as possible from repurposed hardware. Having a few 4GB video cards that actually fit was cool for me. As well as having the SSD for the Windows 2019 and the 1TB NVMe for RAID buffer.
