  • This video is of the Oakland dam removal celebration paddle held on June 1, 2024.
Removal of the dam has reconnected 250 miles of creeks, streams, and aquatic habitats allowing more places for sportfish, freshwater mussels, and other fish and wildlife to live and grow.
Funders and supporters of the dam removal included American Rivers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, the Boroughs of Susquehanna and Oakland, the Upper Susquehanna Coalition via Tioga County Soil and Water Conservation District, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, River Bounty and Susquehanna County.

I used to fish the Susquehanna River around Harrisburg while staying on High Island across from The Three Mile Island I loved it in the "80's"! Caught biggest Small Mouth Bass ever! Or should I say hooked! I almost had her at the boat! And she blasted away into the current turning sideways parallel to the river like a sail to put pressure on the lure stuck to her jaw, the next I knew she exploded one more time into the current and the next thing I knew? I was wearing a G-finished white ghost in a crawfish pattern Big O in my face! It was a beautiful fish on a overcast morning fishing a gravel weed bed on the Susquehanna River! And nice people in the area, had lunch at The Blue Room Bar my bubby's Grandmother owned! Back then it was mostly pontoon boats lined up on the sand bars partying! A few fishermen on the River!

Sounds like a good time and great memory. I haven't made it to that section of the river yet, but it's on my list.
And when you said you stayed on one of the islands, did you mean you were camping on it? When I do paddle through down that way, that's what I'll be doing.
