  • Once upon a time Toyota used to make fun cars to drive. The perfect example is this 1993 Toyota MR2 Turbo. Who would of thought that Toyota produced such a great mid-engine car. With the proper balance of power and weight and a manual transmission this car proves Toyota can make cars that are fun to drive. Check out more about this Toyota MR2 Turbo!

Nice video! I’ve owned 3 SW20 MR2s. The second one I purchased new in 1998, sold it after 4 years then bought the same car back 2 years later. My current one ( 1999 rev. 5) I’ve had for 7 years, totally stock, always garaged, full toyota history, with just 47,000 miles

New subscriber man. That MR2 got my attention. I agree, it's too bad that Toyota just lost their balls and just want to play it safe. Even the new Supra is just a re-badged BMW. The GT-86 is a re-badged Subaru. I understand making boring cars: Corolla, Yaris, Camry; etc is what sells because the whole world is effin boring. But Toyota is taking it to the extreme. The same thing with Mazda. They also have nothing but boring. I mean besides the MX-5, but nothing else. Yep, the 90s had it all: Supra, MR2, RX-7, Integra Type R, Prelude, 3000GT; etc.

Also, owned fun cars like a GTI, VW R32, Supra, (many) early Celicas/Supras, 280ZX, 300ZXTT, cheap Porsches, Miatas, Fiat Spyders, etc. I still drive fun cars like a new Miata, a Jeep Wrangler, a sportbike and even a Crosstrek (6MT, of course)...but there are fewer fun cars out there. Pickups just aren't fun, either...even the Raptors and such. Neither are any SUVs or "performance" sedans with paddle shifters and cost $50K+.

So, time moves forward, but I agree with you about Toyota. That MR2 is the one I almost bought years ago. I clearly remember because I owned a Toyota 4Runner and I was looking to get something totally different. Then I waited some years later and traded my SUV in for the Celica. I owned Toyotas for years and love them, but they just got away from the fun part of driving. Now I drive Subarus and love it even more. Great video!!!

Great car, engine seems came from Caldina, all mods very tasteful. One thing though Corolla & Camry from that time are also very fun cars, they were also built to last, could easily swap drivetrain, handling feels direct, and very straightforward to work on in general. Some Toyota sporties could be really painful when time for service.

Also have a Lotus Esprit and just sold a Porsche Boxter S to get the Supercharged Elise but the point is the Toyota really hit a home run with it’s Ferrari looks with the mid engine configuration etc. you’re right. I haven’t seen even a half hearted attempt at producing a car with excitement and a soul from Toyota since these cars. Mine is dead stock like this one and as hard as it is to want to hot rod the car, somehow I cannot bring myself to butcher up such a pure and unadulterated vehicle. Nice video sir.

Absolutely agree, this MR2, next to some others 90's sport cars were something really special such the NSX, RX-7, R32 GTR, Supra, and just to mention a few japanese models, but italians as the 348TB (Personally love it), the 456GT, 550 Maranello, and german cars, british cars.... Don't want to make a huge list, haha, for me the 80's and 90's were the decades of beautiful modern vehicles, the last time of masterpieces of desing and few with new and pioneering performance, I can't say the same with actual cars of every class and porpose, I don't mean they are bad, but I just can't appreciate them the same way, for me most of them are just fast and crazy modern desing and a lot more complicated to deal with... I'm not even 30, but I love cars that exist time before I was even planned... :-)

I consider myself pretty lucky when it comes to JDM's. have owned 2 1991 mr2's and currently have a 2009 4g eclipse, a 1994 3000gt,and a 1986 Porsche 944(was a totaled wreck but re-fabbed up the rear and fixed it) all of them have been excellent cars and very fun to drive as well..most of them were bone-stock when i got them (often in fairly poor condition) but i got them all fixed up and drove the crap out of them. only 1 of the mr2's i've owned did i change the body substantially when i installed a border body kit, static projector headlights then gave it a 4 stage paint job (black base coat, burgundy red pearl in the clear, then straight clear) also de-badged it and tinted the rear lights. The only thing i didn't change was the factory spoiler. Can't count how often people thought it was a Ferrari. or how often people had no idea what it was. good times lol. Though i'm pretty much in love with my 3000gt (only an sl but still hella fun). And the Porsche 944 is what i call a d.i.l.l.i.g.a.f car. The eclipse is my D.D all of them are modded.

Camry's, Corolla's, trucks and SUV's are what sell very well for Toyota, which is the bottom-line for them. Owned an SW22 for 5 years, modified the suspension and made some engine tweaks...memorable car stock and modified. Sure the FRS/GT86/BRZ is available, but for me personally (even with time behind the wheel), that car is of no interest, nice car but not for me.
As for rumors of Toyota being intersted in reviving the MR2...seeing how Toyota is handling their sports cars (GT86/FRS and upcoming A90 Supra and what was done to the last MR2/W30) I'd like for Toyota to let the MR2 rest in its history...I can only take so much disappointment, hahaha.
