  • Sydney was so expensive, we almost couldn’t visit! But how much is Sydney Australia really?
    Today, we will be exploring a bunch of things to do in Sydney to see how much $100 USD will go doing normal things exploring a city. We will find cheap things to do in sydney, and expensive things as well! It is hard to do Syndey on a budget, but we will try everything in our power to find what to do in Sydney within only $100 USD.
    Today we explored Central Business District, walked the pier, went to Botanic gardens, visited the famous opera house, drank a beer on the pier, walked through the Rocks, and ended our night on the wharf and it was such a busy but beautiful day to see many free things to do in Sydney. We walked over 11 miles!

    I live in Sydney, If I was your tour guide I could have made your $100 USD last for an entire week as I’m a local and know where to go and when. Tip: Google first to see if the tickets are cheaper online, rather than arriving at the venue or place and buying tickets. If you’re wondering why Sydney is expensive it’s because the government mandates that staff are paid a minimum wage which is usually substantially more than the minimum wage in the USA for the same job. For context there is numerous jobs available that pay more than $100,000 per year and you don’t need a college degree to get the role. A person simply emptying rubbish bins into a rubbish truck is paid more than $40 AUD per hour, as it’s a role that most people don’t want - which is why it pays highly.

    There are areas people can walk through at the Sydney Opera House for free. Walk up the stairs to the Box Office and you will see a big lobby area. There's information about upcoming shows and a fabulous souvenir store with fascinating items to buy from all price ranges.

    Traditionally Pitt Street was the busiest street. Lots of free things like the galleries, museums and gardens. Best cheap thing to do is to get the ferry to Manly Beach and then walk to Shelley Beach. The ferry back from Manly to Circular Quay will give you an iconic view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House.

    The area around the Quay and Opera House is a tourist precinct so prices are inflated compared to other areas in Sydney. A cheap way to see the harbour and a Sydney surf beach is to take a ferry from Circular Quay to Manly.

    I grew up in Sydney and it's always been expensive but it's definitely peaked in the last 20ish years. Probably after the Olympics. Like the tower that cost $90 used to be called Centrepoint Tower. It is now Sydney Tower. It opened the year I was born in 1981. I remember going a couple of times as a kid. If it cost anything back then it wasn't much because we didn't have much money and when we went we were in and out after maybe 20 minutes. No way my parents paid the equivalent for that back then.

    The thing is the price of food is the price, there is no tip or tax added on top. Although tips are always welcome, they only need to be a few dollars if you feel like it.
    You are in the tourist trap areas - it is more expensive.
    If you go to a pub in somewhere like Newtown or Enmore (which are eat streets) then the beer is more like 12AUD a glass for craft beer, and you can buy curries for $12 - $15, plus side dishes and rice.
    Another option, if you want a meal with a view is Haberfield Rowers Club. Beers and meals are also pretty inexpensive. As you do not live within 5 kilometres of the club, you can go there and sign in as a guest.

    • @samandnick
      @samandnick  Před 2 měsíci

      That is very true! We picked this area for a reason though, because most foreigners will end up going to these areas!

    • @brontewcat

      @@samandnick Yes they do, but it would be good for vloggers to venture further afield,
      BTW - if you ever come back to Sydney- absolutely do a tour of the Opera House or go to a performance.
      But other mistake virtually every CZcams travel I see is they go to the back of the Opera House. Virtually no one walks around to the front. The building is designed to be seen from the water, so the other side is actually the front.
      You get magnificent views from the other side.

    • @samandnick
      @samandnick  Před 2 měsíci

      @@brontewcat I totally agree! We weren't there long enough to adventure out so we just tried to hit all the main stuff. We had planned to video some farmers markets out in some neighborhoods that aren't touristy but we weren't there on the days the markets were open! Next time for sure!

      @@samandnick They should know that if they buy anything around Circular Quay then they are being robbed blind. Absolutely everything around there is top price. eg a poster complained on YT a few months ago about the high price of yum cha in downtown Sydney. If he had gone 1/4 mile further south to Chinatown he could have enjoyed the same thing for half as much.

  • @johngodden4363
    @johngodden4363 Před 3 měsíci +1

    The prices in Sydney, particularly Sydney central and the waterfront are generally inflated. Most other cities and tourist destinations are generally cheaper and it is a vast land with much to see and do. Alas most Americans tend to have just a couple of weeks vacation a year which limits what you can see.
    I hope you enjoyed your stay.

    The most obvious things to do on a budget are the art galleries and museums which are free with the exception of special touring exhibitions which will probably cost around $20AU but that still leaves 80% of exhibits for free. The commuter ferries cost around $4.50AU which give you a leisurely tour of the harbour.

    • @samandnick
      @samandnick  Před 4 měsíci

    You should tell your American audience that if they order an ‘Entree’ they will be served an appetiser / starter.
    In Australia the main meal is what most Americans refer to as an Entree, so order the ‘Main’, not the Entree.
    It comes from the French word for ‘Entered’ or ‘Entrance’ so it is the dish that starts the dining experience.
    Americans use the word differently to Aussies.
