I believe that there have been previous eras/yugas in which there were various humanoid and non-humanoid races such as Ramas ape army, Nagas, giants and so on. Nagas and Serpas are different. Janamajayan( Parikshit’s son) performed a yagnya to destroy all nagas at the start of Kali Yuga. It is stopped at the tail end of the yagnya, but a good portion of their population was destroyed during the yagnya.
