    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    The tripods begin to vaporize humans as Ray (Tom Cruise) races to get home to his kids.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    An ordinary man has to protect his children against alien invaders in this science fiction thriller, freely adapted from the classic story by H.G. Wells. Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) is a dockworker living in New Jersey, divorced from his first wife Mary Ann (Miranda Otto) and estranged from his two children Rachel and Robbie (Dakota Fanning and Justin Chatwin), of whom he has custody on weekends. On one such visitation, looking after the kids becomes a little more difficult when, after a series of strange lighting storms hit his neighborhood, Ray discovers that a fleet of death-ray robotic spaceships have emerged nearby, part of the first wave of an all-out alien invasion of the Earth. Transporting his children from New York to Boston in an attempt to find safety at Mary Ann's parents' house, Ray must learn to become the protector and provider he never was in marriage. Also starring Tim Robbins, War of the Worlds was directed by Steven Spielberg, who had been planning the project for years, but set it aside until a wave of "alien invasion" films (led by Independence Day) had run its course.

      I never noticed that one guy! But, I do love the subtle, but realistic touch, of having some of the people run away while others wait curiously. You feel more like these are real individuals, rather than a bunch of redshirts for a disaster movie.

    I really do love the little technical details in this scene. For instance;
    1. Not a single shot is from the Tripod's perspective. Every shot is ground level, like we are the ones watching the Tripod tower over us.
    2. Stable camera movements as the crowd stares at the tripod, shakey, tilted camera movements as the crowd starts to panic.
    3. 'Cameraman' runs along the middle of the crowd like we are taking part in the mass hysteria.
    4. Low camera angles to emphasize the Tripod's size.
    5. People starting to sporadically run away as the Tripod stands.
    6. Slight camera shake at Tom Cruise's close-up when the lazers are loading.
    7. The Tripod signature horn is integrated in the soundtrack.
    8. The 'seamless' cut as Tom Cruise exit the clothing shop to have his makeup properly adjusted for the following shot.

Some people are smart enough to run out of there, while others (including Tom Cruise) just stare stupidly at the tripod. Still looks realistic in 2020, cause Spielberg mixes just enough digital effects with actual practical effects on set to keep it consistently believable. Plus he brings it “down to earth” by applying the effects to everyday things like reflections in a mirror and someone’s camcorder, to further enhance the illusion. Timeless filmmaker.

    The best thing about this movie is that it's scary from the beginning till the end. When I was a child I was terrified by this movie but I couldn't stop watching it. You can feel that the characters are costantly in danger, you know that they have no place to run or hyde, and during the all movie you have an overwhelming feeling of oppression that a few other movies can give. Also, this movie shows a perfect analysis of the human behaviour in situations of danger. The people react differently and naturally. Somebody wants to fight, some others kills each other to survive just a few minutes more and someone else help to survive who is in trouble. I like also that this movie don't explain almost anything about the aliens. It's seen only from the prospective of us, little humans, attacked by something way behond our comprension. An amazing movie that is ruined, in my opinion, only by the last 30/20 minutes. The ending is rushed and I always wanted to see more, what happened in other countries or how the society was rebuild after the attack. But overall I think this is one of the best sci-fi movie ever made.

    The problem with translating War of the Worlds from the original Victorian setting to a modern one is that it requires an alternate history setting where we never evolved sci-fi fiction. When the martians landed in the original story, it's understandable that people would gather around and look on in curiosity until the first tripod disintegrates the priest, but in a modern-day setting you have to ask "What the hell is wrong with you people?! Haven't you ever seen an alien invasion movie?!"

      Good point. I can see where the adapters are coming from, though...they want to update the setting to modern-day America because just as the British Empire was seen as the main world power in 1888, America is seen as the dominant world power in the 20th and 21st centuries. So it makes sense that the Martians would want to neutralize the strongest power first, plus, in a narrative sense, it makes the Martians look that much more powerful and Earth that much more helpless when they can decimate the dominant world power in the blink of an eye.

The weather especially was a nice touch. Most movies will take place on either nice warm sunny days or rainy/snowy days. This one took place in a cloudy bleak day, which is what much of the weather around here is like. It makes me feel like this is happening where I live. It feels like it's just a normal November/December day and I was walking around town, shopping or working or whatever, and this thing pops out of the ground.

    Alien invasion aside, the whole setting of this scene before the Tri-Pod gets up triggers an emotion I can't really explain. Something about the combination of it being set in a densely populated part of New Jersey, everyone being dressed in winter clothing, (don't ask me why that detail is important) and the early 2000s traffic makes it the perfect representation of what modern society should be to me for some reason. Like, it's 2005 so it's pre everyone being on their phones and social media all the time, but it's not old enough for it to be obviously set in the past. I don't know, I sound like a lunatic, and I probably am, but there's something about the mid 2000s, and the New York area specifically that was just magical for some reason

      If I said, "Tom Cruise's shoe is untied in one scene, but magically tied in the next, this movie sucks," that would be nitpicking. This was a glaring, "who cares that we just established a rule for the whole movie, let's break it for the sake of a cool shot" plot hole. It's lazy film-making.

      @mrporkchop6805 Před 10 lety +3

    This scene always terrified me. Also the part where the father runs by with his child always breaks my heart. Something parents couldn’t protect their children from experiencing, I think it foreshadows how the main character felt about his own children, especially Rachel. He tried to hide it from her, but eventually she ended up seeing and experiencing everything.
