Pharrell @ 1:51 mark "Start on something that doesn't accommodate you fully, so that you will strive for more", I LOVE this advice, it makes a lot of sense. :)
that's weird I was just thinking about how pharrell use to be a punk street kid making beats and being rebellious and now he's like one of the most listened to people on tv for advice on music. yet to be fair he started making beats just like anyone else would to make music he liked and not to appeal to the mass of people on the show he works for now.
These guys definitely know what they are talking about. Other producers just give out similar advice as everyone else but what these guys are saying, they make sense. They have a great philosophical view of how things should get done whether it's music or doing something else.
What they're saying is so true. I developed my style believe it or not on Playstation's MTV Music Generator. And those are some of the tightest beats I've ever heard local or industry level. When you don't have all the super equipment it demands that you be more creative and you start layering sounds to make a sound that you try to emulate but it ends up being unique.
Yes the start simple learn the piano was great. Listening to first time filmmaker who said he didnt know where to put the camera, just put it out in front someone said
the art of music has evolutionized to many levels. The base of which is the instrument but that dosn't take away from the newer applications like DJing. The end product would still be a new original sound.
Can somebody pleeease tell me were to find that version of the song "Beautiful" that runs in the background thruought the video? It has like this acoustic vibe with the brass and live instrumentation..also the singer used a different cadence when he's on the last part of the hook..It's so fresh it's crazy. I know One day I'll meet pharell himself and ask him personally about this. It sounds like the jam session they did to come up with the actual track. I don't know if I'm wrong, I just want the mp3 lol!!
Wise words. With the immediacy of all of today's music programs (Fruity Loops, Maschine, etc), someone with minimum music knowledge can create pretty dope sounding music. But in the end, because everyone is using those programs, you aren't going to develop a distinctive sound, just more of the same. I think what they are saying is that working from the ground up allows you to create a distinctive sound and style while you are also developing music skills.
Hah, right. There is a lot that can be achieved without formal music training though! I spent years studying music theory, but at the end of the day, if your beat is bangin' then it doesn't matter if you know what a deceptive cadence is, after exploring your craft enough you just do things because they sound good. :)
I hate these arguments about what people use... I feel like you can create with whatever you want, DAWs or real instruments.... As long as what you do makes you happy.... Not everybody has easy access to a lot of these things.... But it's the matter of creating... But everybody has their own view and opinions on what's what... Even these guys here,. I respect them but the come from a different era. What they done would be a challenge to try to do because the industry is evolved now..
i think the point they were tryna make was to make use of what u have, obviously its not easy for a lot of people to get equipment for a studio. i know steve lacy makes music on his iPhone. its a matter of filling the box before u think outside of it u feel me.
Lol~ I remember the old pause tapes with dual cassette decks to loop and etc... It had to be precise each time. Old trial and error over and over after playback. ~Now software does it after one take.
THAT'S SO SO TRUE!!! You got lil nobody producers with home studio with 25 keyboards and 10 modules and their beats sounds like crap. And you got producers like 9th Wonder who only fucks with Fruity loops and got placement on Jay-z, Destiny's child and Mary j Blige Albums. The message is clear MASTER YOUR SHIT!!!
That's some nice advice but I always thought the neptunes beats were.. well.. there's a reason u know one when u hear it and its not like, "hey that timbland" or, "hey, that dre" its more like "hey, wasnt that jayz's beat?"
thats exactly what the game is,its not about talent at all. labels aint handin out money anymore thats old news. the economy plays a big part in it. i know for a fact thrs reall talent out there tho, ive been hearin some stupid nice unsigned artist lately.. mostly outside the U.S
@blackkabnet that true and then people hear all this stuff about a certain drum machine or producing programs and then they go out and get because they heard it from some one... they dont have creativity then dont know the technical aspects of what they doing ... they say "oh i got soul and my music is real" and then they say they favorite music artists is soulja boy and wack flocka or lil b... like c'mon dude...
klimop is absolutley right. Chad & Pharrell = The Neptunes (they produce tracks for many different singers & rappers) N.E.R.D. (No one Ever Really Dies) is a band including Chad, Pharrell & Shay (Pharrells cousin). Simples
i feel ya.....so let me ask you this soldier, if i walk into a distribution company with buckets of money to push, promote, and start a buzz and yet my material is garbage, they would still put it out there? I mean, isn't that whats going on now?
Honestly, the whole point is to make music. Don't get caught up in brands I don't care what you get your sh*t ain't gon' sound professional and you really shouldn't care b/c you should be targeting underground right now. And all that underground sounds like garbage but you love it b/c it feels so authentic. See Wu-Tang, See Lil Wayne. Sequencer, Midi controller, studio projects mic (c1), cheap monitors (although I use dynaudio, reason, ableton if you want to sample, sound card.
WORD ...I don't know the dood on Pharrels' left but i always see him with a FUnky Keyboard. He's definitely FILIPINO AMERICAN lol. and by the way i'm not a master in Piano but I also DJ and these doods know what they are talking about
Chad hugo is half of the neptunes. All the beats you probably only attribute to Pharrell were probably Co produced by "that dude in the left" as well...
i dont think u can force originality, originality comes out of time and love for the art. ofcourse u wanna get paid for doin what u love to do, but doing it just for the money is why everybody imitates whoever is hot.
It's sad though. Most producers nowadays are following trends. Just not too long ago, everyone was doing LIl Jon beats, before that it was Timbaland sound beats. Most producers don't even realize they're doing it. "cookie cutter" beats is what i call em.....
"Pro Tools starter kit"...to get straight to the point, if you're gonna buy music composing software, just start off with light or free versions...Reaper Ableton Live lite version, a cracked version of FL Studio, etc....

I did and said the exact same thing!
He might have had a stroke or something.
@@andrewilliams6866 I didn’t think of that but you might be right. Either that or drxgs.
These days you'd just buy a 500$ laptop and a 30$ copy of Fruity Loops and spend the rest on weed

They are so hot. Seriously.
learning how music works through reading makes it easier to approach music if yu dnt have a good music backround thats the point he is tryna make
FACTS of the day....
DJ QUICK was 1 of PHarrel's influences in his life
no way i never knew this. pharrell & dj quik are my favourite producers (and chad of course)
You can even hear it from his drums pattern tho p lowkey have the same drum pattern as Quik even if g funk is the opposite of what P is\ was doing
These guys definitely know what they are talking about. Other producers just give out similar advice as everyone else but what these guys are saying, they make sense. They have a great philosophical view of how things should get done whether it's music or doing something else.
Wow. I've just completed everything they said including DJing! Off to the sky now
A much needed advice! Divine timing

I wish those were my roommates. That was some of the best advice I have ever heard.
Seeing Sounds, buy it, learn it!

1:51 Great advice. Im Not even a producer but i can use this advice for other things i’m trying to learn
