  • A RUSSIAN helicopter has been blasted out of the sky by Ukrainian forces using a British missile for the first time.
    Dramatic footage shows the moment the Mi-28N is hit by the Starstreak in the Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine.
    The Starstreak is the world’s fastest surface-to-air missile and can travel at three time the speed of sound.
    Ministry of Defence sources said it’s the first time the missile has been used to bring down a Russian plane.
    In the video, the chopper can be seen skimming the treetops before it’s hit in the tail by the Starstreak.
    The missile can be seen lifting off through the trees towards its target.

    The Starstreak system releases three 1kg darts with explosive on each and has to be laser-guided to target. Very tricky to use. But makes it impossible to use flares/chaff against it. The operator has to score 1,000 hits in the simulator before they’re allowed to fire a missile and takes three weeks to train normally. Ukrainians did it in a week.

      I imagine that’s not because they’re better than normal operators. It’s Probably due to time constraints. As in, they’d train them for 3 weeks, if there wasn’t a war on

    Back in the 80's / 90's a friend of mine worked on a British anti aircraft missile system for GEC Avionics called Javelin (not to be mistaken for the current US system). From descriptions I'm reading here, it worked in a similar fashion where the operator had to stay on target until impact. It used a system of zooming lenses and tracking gates on a HUD so it was impervious to flares and chaff. A tracking gate appeared around the heat signature of the enemy aircraft, and one around the missile exhaust. So long as the operator kept the aircraft 'in the crosshair', the missile was guided to the same spot. Not sure if it ever made it out of prototype...

      @lulzalfest Před 2 lety +1

      Stuff like that was used during the Falklands war

    • @dogsnads5634
      @dogsnads5634 Před 2 lety +11

      Javelin did make it into service in the mid 80's.
      It replaced Blowpipe, which required an operator to guide the missile with a joystick. Javelin automated that, all the operator had to do was keep the target in the sight, commands were sent to the missile via Radio Frequency. Javelin was then replaced by Starburst (actually called Javelin S15 in UK service) that replaced the radio link with a laser designation system to avoid jamming. Seekers pointing back at the operator on the missile used the lasers to guide to the target.
      Starburst was then replaced by Starstreak which used the laser guidance method but had a very different missile system consisting of 3 tungsten darts that seperated and were individually guided by laser to the target, these would then detonate with the force fo a 40mm Bofors round when penetrating the aircrafts skin. Huge kinetic energy as each Dart is travelling at m4.0-4.5 at impact.
      The new Martlet, which is complementary to Starstreak, not a replacement, is basically a slightly larger Starburst, but with a larger proximity fused warhead and bigger rocket motor for greater range. Uses the same control system as Starstreak. Totally interchangeable. The idea is that it can deal with small targets like UAV's, particularly ones with very low signatures, ground targets etc. leaving Starstreak for AH and Fast Air. Martlet has also been adopted by the Royal Navy to deal with Fast Attack Craft from the Wildcat helicopter and, potentially, a canister system mounted on the side of the Navy's 30mm gun mount.

Guys in the desert with AKs RPGs and the occasional old Soviet AA missile launcher? Not too bad, a country that has thousands of people with modern anti air weaponry that needs little more training other than how to fire it, potentially everywhere is going to be a nightmare for helicopters and for planes things get difficult.
      Russian rotary wing aviation casualties have lowered in recent months, they were so high and so close together early war because the Russians went in under the impression that they would face limited resistance and not a country wide effort to beat back the invaders.

    The thing to remember is this. Russia is the 11th largest economy in the world, with about 150 million in population. Its economy is about the size of Italy. California and even Texas have a larger GDP than Russia. That means that these losses are harder to sustain. When the Europeans stop buying Russian gas, even their major source of wealth will start to dry up. The pipelines run east to west, so, they are useless if your major customer stops buying what you have to sell. With half of his foreign currency reserves locked up and out of reach, Putin is just not going to have the money to replace losses like these.
