At the STIHL Timbersport Series competition, athletes have to prove their skills in six disciplines. Strength, endurance and the perfect handling of the axe and chainsaw make the difference between victory and defeat.

It looks too random to me. They say a lot of strength and precision is required but I can't tell. Football makes 10 minutes of action stretch to 90 minutes. I think these axe swings need to be slowed down so that a 12 second event takes at least a minute to watch and the axe sticking or not can be seen what caused it.

I remember seeing one of these in 2011, but it was marred by someone getting extremely injured during the event.
Watched a bunch of these guys live at an event here in Springfield MO. It's insane. The 50 HP hotsaw is louder than you would ever imagine. Loved the competition, that's how I discovered competitive timbersport.

It's a little something called- Razor sharp axes and ideal environment and factors.
European woods are absurdly soft compared to American hardwoods. You can see this reflected in axe designs in NA versus the EU. NA wood axes have thicker heads with smaller cutting surfaces as compared to their European counterparts, allowing them to make effective cuts into American oaks. European wood axes really aren't suitable for use on American hardwood, as the broad blades spread the force and result in shallow cuts.
