Fantastic interview Helen. I really want to get into farming and in particular regenerative agriculture. I wish I would have come across Zach Bush earlier. I would have definitely attended his talks on Melbourne 🙏

Ive seen a few of his videos and listened to his podcasts and have been amazed and inspired by his words, however advocating regenerative farming is inconsistent with being plant-based? How can that be explained?

I think a plant-based diet doesn't exclude meat, it just means that meat isn't something that is consumed at every meal, just maybe four or five times a week. At least, that's how I look at it. Regenerative agriculture restores the soil, the soil produces the plants. As someone said, the ruminant animal is basically a composter turning grass and other green things into protein we can eat. Bad soil is not restored nearly as fast without animals, and we need good soil both for good food and to absorb carbon and water into the soil instead of washing it away along the soil down rivers and into the oceans. As long as animals are treated well, given a fresh grass frequently, are healthy and happy, and when the end comes they're treated with respect, I think we need to get over the idea that it's evil to eat meat. Most of nature consists of predators and prey. And some predators are really nasty about how they kill their prey: orcas, for example, who torture the sea lions they catch before finally eating them. We should be better than that, and I've seen videos of how cattle are calmly walked into a trailer without any fear or stress. Check out Greg Judy's videos if you want to see this process.

@@wendyscott8425 that is actually incorrect. A plant based diet excludes all meat dairy and eggs

@@wendyscott8425 how can you treat an animal with respect then take it's life away? Why do some humans think they have the right to take the life of another? What gives you the right?
Yes some animals kill..of course..they are carnivores and they do it to survive. It's just more excuses. One after another to justify your animal eating habits. Surely if one wants to live in a peaceful world we must respect all it's inhabitants. By respect I mean. Let animals live out their lives. Anything else is speciesism. And hypocrisy

@@Magoolskool For you, perhaps. For me, it means eating meat and dairy in moderation. I also make sure those products are grown regeneratively to quickly restore the soil and cover the fields with carbon-absorbing plants.

@@Magoolskool It is unreasonable to think animals living out their lives is either a good idea or possible. Farmers won't feed animals if they don't provide them an income. Grass-fed cows on regenerative farms live lovely lives eating excellent plants that they help fertilize and restore the topsoil quickly. But they must be managed by people in order to have this idyllic existence. I would suggest that it's quite mean to a plant to pull it up by its roots and eat it. Plants have feelings, too, if the research into the microbiome of the soil is to be believed. Nature designed our world to be full of predators and prey. Humans wouldn't even be here if it weren't for our omnivorous behavior, especially during the ice ages. The animals grown on regenerative farms have great lives and just one bad day, but even then they are treated with respect and gratitude. Believe what you like, of course, and if it makes you happy, no problem. I care about the earth and generative agriculture is the best solution for global warming, restoring the soil, and feeding people nutritious and delicious food, and restoring wildlife.
