  • Air Link VS Virtual Desktop 2022, Air Link Virtual Desktop comparison, Which is better Air Link or Virtual Desktop, What's the difference between Virtual Desktop and Air Link
For as long as I've owned my Oculus (Meta) Quest 2 I've been using Air Link to play PCVR games wirelessly and I think it's great! I've seen a lot of people online though saying their Air Link experience is less than ideal though. Ok, they say Air Link "sucks" and that another application called Virtual Desktop provided a vastly superior experience. I've always thought Air Link is great but at the same time wanted to give Virtual Desktop a try. Having now used both Air Link and Virtual Desktop I currently feel Air Link provides the better game play experience and in this video I detail why that is. Don't get me wrong Virtual Desktop is a great app. It has some really great features I totally prefer over Air Link's implementation and I talk about what those are in this video as well. I hope you enjoy the video.

All the stuttering seems related to the "Guardian" system on Quest 2/Quest. Try disabling the guardian system in (settings, system, developer) and give that a try. Worked for me instantly. Also in my opinion Airlink does look clearer and implements sharpness better than VD, but I tend to use VD as it just seems more reliable, easier to connect, and tweaking the settings is a much better experience. Airlink also tends to interfere with audio input/output settings a lot which is frustrating. VD just works as it should every-time.

I have tweaked both as much as I can, following all kinds of guides, and aside from changing the saturation and color slightly, of which i am not that interested in, Air link just works better for me, especially as some games still get a bit weird with the controls in virtual desk top for me for some reason. airlink just works, and works great. I would recommend everyone who has problems with their router try connecting directly to your PC via your pc's hotspot. I have my PC connected to my router via WiFi6 and I would connect my quest 2 to my PC through the router. It worked fine but if anyone else was doing anything intensive on the network would get stuttering and hitches which wasn't the best experience. Then realized could just connect directly to my PC via hotspot and it's so much better no more lag, better clarity, less latency almost to the point where it feels as if I'm wired directly to my PC with a link cable. I Would definitely recommend to anyone who has a WiFi6 network card and either can't connect their PC to their router with Ethernet or doesn't have a wifi 6 router give this a try.

Like I said in the video, I think Virtual Desktop is cool too. I like how easy it is to change settings from the Virtual Desktop menu, I like the theater and other environments and I especially like how launching Steam games works. Just click the game thumbnail and Virtual Destop launches Steam VR for you and then the game. It's awesome. It's just the stuttering that puts me off. I really wish I could have fixed it because I like everything else about Virtual Desktop but no matter what settings I used it was always there. My game play with Air Link is super smooth which is the most important element to me.

I have upgraded to an 3090 Ti, recently. Before that I was using VD as it has been recommended to me by so many people and on my older 1070 this would hold true.
Now, on the new GPU I discovered that AirLink is pushing higher FPS than VD pretty much consistently, but that comes at a higher overall CPU overhead since you will now also run the oculus runtime and steamVR simultaneously. Anyway, I'm surprised about the results.
Where VD shines however is gameplay of non-VR games in cinematic mode. Input latency and image clarity are superior to whatever steamVR offers with that virtual room while VD also offers a much larger variety of rooms and sceneries.
Both have their place in VR, IMHO. There's also those games that run terrible, no matter what hardware you own (looking at you, VRChat...) And there, VD with its synchronous space warp is a godsend. The asynchronous implementation AirLink is using just can't beat that.
Bottom line: AirLink wins as long as the FPS target is being hit without ASW. In any low FPS situation (be it low spec hardware or hard to drive games) Virtual Desktop is the way to go.

I am using the 128GB Quest 3 and have tried using both Air Link and, virtual desktop, in most games, Half Life Alyx being one, I have a better gaming experience with Virtual Desktop. Virtual Desktop runs games buttery smooth for me, while Air Link has a tendency to shake, break, and just act weird in general. Again, this is just my experience on my gaming rig. I have a GIGABYTE B550M AORUS PRO, Ryzen 7 AMD 5800X, RTX3090 TI, a Samsung 980 Pro M.2 SSD, and 32GB of RAM.

Quest 3 Airlink SteamVR is blurry as hell no matter what video settings I've tried. With a cable I can get it crisp but I want CRISP graphics without a damn cable.... I just hooked up VD, ran SteamVR through it. Night and day difference. CRYSTAL clear image in Fallout 4 VR. There is def something wrong in the Airlink/SteamVR settings. Also the performance "feels" better with VD but I need real numbers to confirm. Questlink and Airlink both have stutter issues if you step away from the play zone and go back. It never recovers. Especially Questlink's home area.

Big wall of text here but to summarize great video and air link has developed heavily to be better than VD in some areas!
I mainly sim race and I noticed that the jitter with text you talked about is what I normally notice with VD SSW. Disabling it of course fixes it but if you are running a demanding title and are not prone to motion sickness because of SSW, you lose out on that benefit.
Today I was trying to optimize F1 22: "the best worst VR sim racing game". In short it's not optimized well at all with its outdated OpenVR implementation. I was working to get OpenXR running to remove it's horrible jitter when moving your head in the car and had to "resort" to airlink. Little did I know, air link had improved so much when it came to ASW and ease of use that I might have to consider what I'll use in the future. The experience now is really great with Air Link and I also noticed that text in menus is as sharp as ever with no wobble or jitter from spacewarp interpolation.

Seems to me your wifi signal sucks. It's fluctuating between 500 and 899 Mhz, and even in Airlink you can see HL Alyx is dropping frames - Spacewarp is probably trying to do it's best to fix this. VD can't work if the signal coming in is crap - crap in, crap out. I'm not a VD fanboi, but I think the video is showing the problem clearly - in your case. czcams.com/video/rXTbFZ0vjjY/video.html shows this clearly

My typical playspace is 5 or 6 meters away from my router (because that's the room my PC is in) and through a couple walls and Im pretty sure that's the reason for the wifi signal fluctuation. That being said I've set up in the same room as my router also and while throughput is better when I'm closer the overall experience is the same. Virtual Desktop still stutters every few seconds. I did have someone suggest the stuttering may be a result of my guardian being small, which is the case most of the time because I don't have any large rooms I can regularly play in. They suggested turning the guardian sensitivity down or even turning it off completely to fix the stuttering. I have yet to test this theory though. I plan to eventually but have just been very busy and haven't gotten around to it. I will eventually though. 🙂👍🏼

I'm there with you. Virtual Desktop is a really great app. I too like how if lets you change settings while you're in VR that you have to open the Oculus Debug Tool to change when using Air Link (i.e. the performance overlay, sharpening, asynchronous space warp, gamma, etc). Not a big deal but much more cumbersome for sure. If I was able to get rid of the stuttering with Virtual Desktop it would be my go to for sure. Both Virtual Desktop and Air Link open SteamVR to play Half Life Alyx. Once in Half Life Alyx per Air Link using a fixed compression of 30, I went into SteamVR settings and checked the resolution and it was 1708x1724. I then changed the Air Link compression to around 100 and checked the resolution again, it had changed to a lower resolution. So, it seems with Air Link, changing the compression to be less also decreases the resolution. Running Half Life Alyx with Virtual Desktop with compression set to 30 and on the Ultra setting (note this setting alters the resolution of the game being launched) the resolution was 1820x1888. I changed to the compression to around 100 and checked the resolution again and it remained at 1820x1888. Maybe Air link is performing better because the default settings of Air Link run Half Life Alyx at a lower resolution than does Virtual Desktop. For maybe a more accurate comparison, you could try fixing both Air Link and Virtual Desktop to run Half Life Alyx at the same resolution and compression rate, and see how the performance compares. Anyhow, not sure, but I think Air Link is performing better only because of its lower resolution default setting.
