I love that the message of this song is pretty much just "I've caught you off guard and now have control over the battle."
I've never thought of that. Love this song way more now.

Persona 5 is a 2016 role-playing video game developed by Atlus. It takes place in modern-day Tokyo and follows a high school student known by the pseudonym Joker who transfers to a new school after being falsely accused of assault and put on probation. Over the course of a school year, he and other students awaken to a special power, becoming a group of secret vigilantes known as the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. They explore the Metaverse, a supernatural realm born from humanity's subconscious desires, to steal evil intent from the hearts of others.

As you might've guessed from the lyrics this is the main battle theme of the game, this is what you hear most of the time while you're fighting. The whole song is a very colorful, smooth and "jazzy" way of saying "Ha! You didn't expect that, did you?".
The game is also very big on hiding in the shadows/striking from behind in order to win battles, so the song matches the game really well.
As you also might've guessed (or heard) the singer, Lyn Inaizumi, doesn't really speak english. This makes her delivery and enunciation a bit confusing at times, but also gives the songs a certain uniqueness that comes from "breaking up" certain words and sounds in very unconventional ways.
I prefer Take Over but Last Surprise doesn't pull any punches either

I'm currently playing through Persona 5 for the first time ever, totally blind, didn't even know what kind of game it was. So I just picked up to play. I have to say, I'm around halftime, but this game is awesome!!! Everything is great about it, story, characters, the gameplay... And the music dude, one of the best I have ever heard in videogames! I hope you keep listening to these pieces, like Life Will Change, or Take Over!

Thats a rare moment where not being english like me added the difficulty "Nightmare" when trying to understanding the lyrics
Still the singer has an incredible voice and it doesnt really matter but when you start to understand you realize she made an incredible job while not speaking english at all
One of my personal favorites from Persona 5 is the final infiltration/boss theme for the third semester "I Believe" the entire song perfectly captures the feelings of the main group in the lyrics while still being an amazing bop

I'd recommend "I believe", "Take Over", "Whims of Fate" or "Life will change" from the Persobna 5 Ost. Or for some variety, "Signs of Love" from Persona 4, "Mass Destruction" from Persona 3, or "Laser Beam" from Persona Q. Plenty of great songs in the Persona series.

Hi Knox, great reaction. Another Rapper who might be interesting for you is 'The Stupendium'. He mostly focuses on a Videogame-Theme and has awesome Wordplay and Rhyme-Writing. He recently started a new Series he calls 'Unlikely Cyphers' where he, as the name may suggest, makes Cyphers on Topics that nobody nowadays would make a cypher about. The first Episode of the Series is a Muppet-Show Cypher. Some of the Songs I would recomment are 'Slide into the void' or 'Ad Infinitum'

good video, this persona 5 game has the best video game soundtracks I recommend listening to "No more what Ifs" from the same game is a chill song and metaphorical messages
It really speaks to the musics credit how well it conveys the purpose in the game within the song where as other games might just have some good tracks they aren't tied to the identity of the game
Definitely do life will change, it’s the theme that plays once you are ready to fight a boss. It’s as good as rivers in the desert.

There’s only one thing I can say at a moment like this:
“Heh, ALRIGHT!”
This is the normal battle theme (ATLUS games are never subtle on their soundtrack and their normal battle themes sound like boss themes). The theme of this game is covert operation where they take their enemies by surprise (It is built into the game that you can get the drop on enemies to take advantage of the situation). The smoothness of the theme and the lyrics convey that they are skilled and will have already cleared the room before you catch up to where the battle happened. "Mind" plays a dual role as it is a statement that "we are ten steps ahead of you" and that they are literally fighting with their minds in a cognitive world (personas are manifestations of your mental self).

Phantom of the Opera guy in the front is "Joker' the main character. Lord of Vultures in the back is Arsene which is the embodiment of his spirit of rebellion which he unleashes in combat as his "Persona." The Phantom Thieves are in rebellion against the status quo. So all of them have "Personas" that represent some aspect of rebellion.
Yeah this one is another battle theme! In the original version of the game, this song comes on whenever you get the jump on an enemy!

Also, that's what I really love about this song. It's literally the epitome of "I've already won" because, like you said, she's so calm when talking about such specific and detailed violence. It completely and entirely spells out just how much of a power gap there is in the player's favor, which is just spectacular for a song to do.

This is one of the best battle themes in any rpg ever.
Surprised you didn't dive more into the funky bass line. I'd suggest listening again and only listening for the bass, because they are going absolutely nuts in the back of the mix.
The Persona 5 soundtrack is heavily influenced by 70s disco and it's just a tad time and a very different vibe than a lot of popular game music and contemporary music.
If you like this this one, you should look into the Last Surprise Scramble version that they used for the sequel
You should really play this game, it's a huge time investment, but the story and soundtrack is so good!
The main things I can say without really spoiling anything, is that is the protagonist up front, and in the back is his "Persona," a manifestation of his inner self.

This song is about how the villains are so full of themselves and believe themselves yo be untouchable but the Main Cast has slowly been tearing them down before closing the trap.
If you like rapping, you should listen to some of the Persona 3 soundtrack, especially the tracks with Lotus Juice! Loved P5 but the soundtrack could've been even more amazing if LJ was in it!
