  • Hansi Kürsch, lead singer of legendary German power metal band Blind Guardian, discusses the album artwork of A Night at the Opera, the relationship between Heavy Metal and Fantasy literature, art and games, and more.
After changing the sound and style a bit for their follow up to Nightfall in Middle Earth, they turned to painter Paul Raymond Gregory for a cover art work. It was a real pleasure to spend so much time with Hansi at the Blind Guardian studios in the German countryside, and our shared love of Tolkein, fantasy and heavy metal was a joy to discuss with him.

Cool to hear how the cover came to be. This album literally and measurably changed my life, all those years ago 😅
Very cool idea for a channel, and great execution 🤘🏻

He just nailed why I think Secrets of the American Gods is actually, for me, better than the novel. The fantasy Gaiman made is incredible, don't get me wrong, but the song evokes the mood that I feel from the *idea* of the novel -- and, as I've gotten older, the novel doesn't as much... not anymore. That's not the novel's fault, but Kursch brought it back for me in Odin's war and why he had to do it.

Thank you very much for the video and the interview, was really nice to hear an artist doing a little breakdown of an album artwork and how it became what it is! Also, props to Hansi for using a term "fantasy metal", have loved the idea of labeling some modern metal albums by themes or aesthetics, not the traditional way and glad that some of the artists share it
Would be really happy to see Tobias Sammet break down Avantasia's "A Paranormal Evening with the Moonflower Society" artwork and music videos and tell the public more about their characters 💙

Yes totally! Bands get thrown into genres and sub-genres, but as artists they are constantly exploring different themes, or focusing on one or two that can come to define them more than their sound or style.
