    Despite being a National Monument, this park was a complete unknown to us until research started taking place for an upcoming trip to Utah. How this park never landed on our radar until now is a mystery but we want to make sure that it is on yours. Natural Bridges National Monument is a treasure and one of the most unique areas that we've explored to date.
    Located in southeast Utah, just south of Canyonlands National Park, Natural Bridges National Monument is a group of three rock bridges formed millions of years ago. Sand, silt and mud layered over time by an ancient sea. Colliding plates pushed the layers upward to create the Colorado Plateau. Eventually the Colorado River would carve canyons into the rock and streams from this carved away to create these magnificent bridges.
    The three arches of the park - Sipapu, Kachina and Owachomo - represent different stages of erosion. Kachina Bridge is thicker than the delicately thin arch of Owachomo. This is nature and time on full display.
    When visiting, one has a number of options to observe and take in the majesty of these bridges. There are overlooks at each bridge for those short on time or not physically abled to hike down the canyon to get closer. For those wanting to hike, there are individual trails from each overlook down under the bridge as well as a 9.8 mile (15.8 km) full loop trail that passes all three natural bridges and two shorter loop trails that connect the Sipapu Bridge to Kachina Bridge (5.7 mi/9.2 km) or Kachina Bridge to Owachomo Bridge (6.5 mi/10.5 km).
    If visiting, there is an available campground featuring 13 first-come first-serve sites that feature tent pads and can accomodate RVs up to 26 feet in length. Sites have no water or electrical hookups.

    My oldest daughter and I came out here this past weekend. This is a massively underrated park that doesn't appear to get a lot of visitation or attention it really deserves because 1) it's pretty remote, and 2) it gets wickedly hot in the summer. We stayed two nights, and that was perfect because we got to do Sipapu and Owachomo one day, and Kachina the next day, and took a couple of side trips in the area so we wouldn't have to sit in camp. The sites don't get much shade during the day, but the ones near the campground entrance seem to start getting shaded pretty well later in the afternoon.
    Also, we ended up getting a little visitor the morning we were packing up in the form of a faded midget rattlesnake in the brush by our tent pad. Fortunately, he didn't want anything more to do with us than we did with him and he took off after a little bit, but that was a good reminder that it's smart to pay attention to one's surroundings in a high desert area.

    • @CactusAtlas
      @CactusAtlas  Před rokem +1

      Appreciate the info about shading in the campground. Always looking for tips like that especially since camping there is still on our list. 👍 Glad that snake didn't care to bother. We actually had our first rattlesnake encounter on our last trip to Utah over east in Hovenweep. Been a long time coming! 😅

    Absolutely fascinating! The fact alone that you can hike so close is incredible. Is there any evidence that you could see that would tell that there has been any that have collapsed over the millenia?

    • @CactusAtlas
      @CactusAtlas  Před 3 lety +2

      I did not see any evidence like that, but I also certainly did not hike the entire area extensively. Gravity and erosion will always have their way, so I am confident that there are fallen bridges out there, and would not be surprised if there are some in that canyon.

    The fear that destroyed the hearts of men, became his fuel and danger was something to be conquered, the places that do not forgive are littered with his foot prints as evidence that once a man who could not be frightened like a sissy La La walked these places.

Constructive criticism is so rarely given on this platform as it's just so easy to click a like or dislike button and never know the reasons why.
