One of my most positive experiences that happened with the game was probably around a year ago when I played a trickster match. I was hot garbage and ran all the controversial perks at the time as trickster, and I went against a streamer at the time and I played like a dick and we shit talked each other back and forth in game but when I came to the stream afterwards we had a good talk and I genuinely enjoyed their stream and now a year later I'm almost in their streams daily either chatting or as his teammate and we are great friends and I'm glad DBD let us meet. That's one reason why I keep playing!

That’s not even cos of the t bags, which can be a little irritating but generally don’t really bother me, it’s more cos I won’t give them that final satisfaction of chasing them out. It’s not even a salty thing, I just won’t dance to their tune 😆🤷🏻‍♂️

It was a group of Offline TTVs doing anti-hook/Sabo builds, and I was the bad guy for slugging, despite them creating no other option for me. Because of that I kind of vowed myself to always think about the Killer when playing survivor, you can't blame the killer for countering you when you use something that is counterable. A lot of today's toxicity is a long-lasting effect of Ochido's spread and normalization of survivor toxicity. He was the one to popularize making clips where killers get bullied, where the sole purpose of playing the game as a survivor was to make the killer angry and rage quit. I remember having to deal with Ochido wannabies daily, they'd abuse the ranking system to join lower rank lobbies to bully killers, they'd switch to flashlights last second, they'd abuse map offerings to their advantage. And if it was obvious you were pretty decent as a killer and they got downed before they made a funny clip, they'd disconnect to find a worse killer so they can bully them instead. Things are *significantly* better now, true toxicity is really rare. Nowadays you just deal with tryhards that use meta builds and play to win.

    @OmegaYoshi13 Před rokem +13

Besides the rather negative mindsets the DBD community has, I think a majority of the toxicity stems from player frustration. From personal experience and from watching others, I think this frustration comes from how people play (like being with timid survivors who hide all game, or having a killer camp, slug or tunnel (or any combo of the 3)) as well as BHVR themselves and how they handle certain things within the game.

    • @KIxYOSHI2077
      @KIxYOSHI2077 Před rokem +3

      I feel the same way.
I think DbD as a game itself allows for too many "mechanics" that will obviously ruin fun and lead to frustration, to go unpunished.
For example, if you're being face camped, (especially by an insta down Killer), there's nothing you yourself can do about it. You're at the mercy of other players, who might just decide it's better to do gens. It actively stops you from playing the game you're trying to play.
This is obviously gonna lead to a lot of frustration. And it's just one example of SO MANY, on both sides.
I play some of the most toxic games in the market, League of Legends, Call of Duty, Rainbow Six Siege...
Not one of them ever had me as frustrated as just about 2/3 of my DbD games. Because their players are toxic, yes, but none of them allow for so many frustrating and hurting actions gameplay wise.
You can ignore someone texting you to "kys", and you can ignore your teammate running it down, even if it loses you the game, cause it doesn't affect yourself and your own decision making. But DbD puts so much control over your own actions in others hands. To the point where other people can decide to stop you from further playing the game while holding you captive. It takes away your autonomy.
It is bound to make people mad.
It makes me mad. I love the basic concept of DbD and the characters, but I cannot stand playing more than a handful of games maybe once a week. It mentally drains me too much.

What do you think how fun do you think for the killer, when at his first hook with a relative fast chase 2 gens pops, and when he move away from the hook the 3rd is finished as well?
I am sure, some of the killers camp because they try to get reactions and then bully the survivors for it, like a real troll. But be sure, that is the minority. Most of the killers just simply try to win, and it is way easier if somebody is out of the game early. Or at that point what i described they just want to secure at least one kill.

I started playing around July 2020. I had friends playing but I was hesitant because I heard stories of people being mean. I finally got it and one of the first games I played a survivor yelled at me for not taking a hit. And I later played tombstone Michael (didn't realize how tombstone worked) and a survivor told me I'm the worst. I was like geez. But I kept playing because I had fun when I didn't have those interactions. The game can be frustrating and I've experienced the frustration. And you never know what someone is experiencing IRL that they then take into the game. Even yesterday I had a survivor tell me I purposely denied him hatch which was not the case and he came into my chat on the defense but we talked it out and we are good. He was lovely and apologized to me for being upset. That wouldn't have had a happy ending if I didn't treat the situation with kindness and actually listen to him and likewise with him listening to me. Players need to take accountability for their words and actions in end game chat and outside the game. And players need to know their own limits. Took me sometime to listen to myself. If I'm getting upset at bad match after another I turn the game off for a bit. Everything will be ok if you need to stop playing for your own sanity but people need to take accountability when they become toxic. 3100 hours later...I've memed and played in tournaments. I still thoroughly enjoy the game even with all its faults. I like the game which is why I play. People can play how they want in game but be accountable for what you take out of it too. In the end it is just a game❤ I will say I've met some wonderful people through DBD who I consider dear friends.

The only reason for this level of toxicity in this game is poor game design and balancing causing frustration to either side and devs taking years to address core issues, while introducing more "fun" only for one side changes. Toxicity is the result of a much bigger problem with the game itself.

I feel the part where you say they avoid the other side as if they had the plague. I gave my opinion on circle of healing and healing in general on a stream and then the streamer got mad at me and called me an homophobic bigot of a man for defending my point and then banned and blocked me saying I would not have done that were they a man. I was so confused but then I kept reading the chat from a non connected account and they all talked shit about me playing killer and not knowing how the game works and all that while the streamer laughed at me also for that.... I am a survivor main.
Edit: Before anyone gets any ideas about them calling me an homophobic bigot, I didn't even know they were lesbian because in my eyes it didn't matter since I was having fun up until that happened. I was even in their lobby and they said they were disgusted they played with such a filthy person..

Hello, Aaron! I've been watching your videos for a few months at least, now, and you've quickly become one of my go-to DBD channels. I love how fair your videos are to everyone, and the care you take with more sensitive topics.
I dunno if you'll even see this, but I wanted to humbly request something for you to cover? I've been trying to talk about it, but I don't have a following and I'm getting absolutely nowhere in trying to bring attention to it (and, ironically, the last time I tried to bring it up on Twitter, someone turned it into a "they don't care because they coddle the Killers" thing, which COMPLETELY missed the point).
I've been trying to bring awareness to the fact that the new heartbeat feature for the Terror Radius doesn't work well enough for some people, and how the red meter they had added to Spine Chill was a far better option for them. I know the Spine Chill update was only supposed to be temporary, but it tremendously helped me as someone with audio processing issues. The heartbeat doesn't work as well for me, and I'm back to the same problems I had before with not truly being able to gauge the distance of the Killer. It's more confusing, and a distraction, than it is helpful. It also doesn't really help much if you're in a locker to know how safe it is to come out of hiding. I know that I can't be the only one that feels that they shouldn't have taken an accessibility feature away (even if it *was* supposed to be temporary), nor can I be the only one that found Spine Chill to be exponentially more helpful.
Really, I'm just trying to start a dialogue about proper accessibility options, and how there *should* be options because one size doesn't fit all needs. However, like I said, I don't have a platform and only my friends watched the video I made about it 😅
If this is something you would be interested in covering, please do! If not, I totally understand. I just figured it didn't hurt to ask! Thanks for reading this if you do see it 😊

I also have over 2K hours in the game, so I know a little bit. Probably 3/4 of that time I spent playing as killer, but that still gives me 500 hours as survivor and I can affirm that 80% of survivor mains are disgusting. Test it out yourself, play a killer you're not very good with and with a build you're not used to, the survivors are gonna try their best to make you feel like trash. This "choose your side and hate the other" thing exists, and I'm conviced that it's not the killers fault. Play fair, have fun and don't be a douche.

I am a survivor main, I rarely play killer so I don’t know too much on their end. But lately I have actually encountered many toxic individuals during matches who intentionally through the game by messing up gens and heals, work with the killer, or even use other survivors as bait. The end game chat isn’y the best either, with constant cursing and many survivors and killers showing so much entitlement.
Overall, with the amount of hate and hostility I have encountered in dbd I think the toxicity is found within a person and not the community.

LITERALLY. The killers ironically are usually not toxic, only Bubba mains who do that shit on purpose. Nurse is just powerful so it's not toxic, she just stomps lol. Had a survivor literally point flashlight at me as a surv to rat me out to the killer, and deliberately spam heal so I couldn't run and throw a pallet and vault a bunch of times to bring the killer over to my gen. I just went to the hook, stood at it, pointed at it, and the killer hooked me so I suicided on hook. I reported them after.

This whole " us vs them " mentality goes to the ones that only play one side in my opinion. Because if we think about it most survivors never played killer and it shows they always have to say dumb things like " we're allowed to have fun but not the killer " or " killers are toxic " or " survivors ruin everything " this is where the whole us vs them happens. And probably a few killers never played survivor at all which is why it's important to play both sides. I don't understand why most survivors have to to cry about everything when it's literally just a game and Behavior isn't helping in anything since they seem to side with survivors more.
The toxicity in this community is so ridiculous to me. When we heard Ada's voice for the first time in Resident Evil 4 remake the voice actor received a lot of backlash to the point where she had to delete all of her social medias because of harassment. In Mortal Kombat 1 a character named Tanya was changed significantly and it received a lot of backlash to the point where idiots were harassing NRS and the face model herself. But oh man DBD community is just something else. At the end of the day both sides are just playing to win period. It was a party game both sides would be memeing around which barely happens.

I’ve been playing DBD for 2+ years now on Xbox. Thankfully I don’t get exposed to a lot of toxicity because it takes more effort to send a message on console. Occasionally I’ve received messages when I play killer that I was camping or I’m trash. I rarely reply and just delete, I honestly try my best to play fair, I’m just not all that great playing killer. I usually only play killer to complete challenges. If I do get a negative comment when trying to complete challenges, I’ll usually reply with an apology and explain the situation. I figure it’s better to have a honest conversation than to engage in a battle. I have found watching Aaron’s videos have helped me be more aware of unfair practices playing killer and I try to avoid unfair play. Overall I really enjoy the game.

As a killer main, i can truly say that Skull Merchant is so broken with her 3-gen abilty. I have been running a build recently that has basically got me so many 4k's they've mostly been 3k's but thats because i usually give the last survivor the hatch. One match, i loaded in, and before i even did anything, one survivor dc'ed as soon as they heard my terror radius. Then soon after 2 nicoles cage's dc'ed. This was after the recent update were bots would replace survivors who dc. I kill ed the bots and let the last true survivor go. She needs to be reworked, no nerfs, no buffs, a complete rework before she can stop being so annoying to play with/against.

And yes I play her myself, and yes I've had lost to a good team who knew how to counter me, yes games last for ever but again, it's never impossible.

A lot of toxicity today results from early 2016-era toxic compilation content creators. This eventually spread to being normalized on the game. The worst part is that when a new game like dbd comes out, the community brings the same toxicity to that game and kills it for newcomers. The devs are aware how toxic the community is, but they seem clueless on how to stop it.

      @hollow1585 Před rokem

Wouldn't work with the current systems in place in DbD. There are too many issues in regards to mechanic balance, map balance, design balance, etc. They try to have the community playtest for them and then will ignore a majority of that feedback and push patches live anyway. BHVR only mildly cares about those things. Hell, they typical only balance a thing because it gets used a lot, not because it is strong or weak but rather it depends on how popular that thing is. Items, addons, powers, etc. Killers get nerfed or buffed based on kill rates alone, nothing else, just the kill rates. That's why Trapper is stuck where he is in terms of viability after years while Blight and his addons are still a problem years later. There is a reason they won't do a health update even though the community has been asking for one for years now. No, they only care about selling product, BHVR gets hate because it's deserved. They gaslight and straight fucking lie to us as a community way too often. They talk about how much they care about their players but then ignore major issues in the game the players from both sides want addressed. They do just enough to keep the money flowing. They don't care about their game or the community of players, they only care about those sales.
A mode without MMR, a casual or fun gamemode would need to be so vastly different fromwhat current DbD is that there is a high chance people wouldn't enjoy that either. There would be no incentive to play in the MMR mode and not just roll people in casual. It would be exactly like the old Rank system that people currently love to wax nostalgic about even though it was objectively worse then SBMM is now. BP isn't and shouldn't be used for the incentive for reaching top grade every month when there is any form of MMR system in place for the ranked mode. Which circles back to, BHVR only cares about the sales. This is why shards are almost never given out when they screw something up majorly. It's why we get around ONE MATCH worth of BP when they screw up something that makes the game unplayable.
They care about the players money, not the players, not the game.

And honestly I know this sounds unfair, but at the core, it's usually a competitive gamer behaving like an A--hat that ruins it for everyone else. And thats not a survivor vs killer thing at all. I don't really understand the reputation when the toxicity is so easy to avoid. this game has no in game voice chat that detriments you if you shut off. you don't have to look at endgame chat and if you're in a Discord and people are giving bad vibes, you can leave. I used to play Overwatch and I still have a vivid memory of me leaving voice chat on because I was playing healer and having a dps player yell at me, like, literally scream, for reviving the tank instead of him. plus there's no chat box in the game either! I remember playing MMOs where you'd have just harassment popping up on your screen all the time while you were just trying to play. none of that is present in dbd. it's only toxic if you yourself choose to engage in that behaviour. also unless someone is literally holding the game hostage I just choose not to view any player decisions as "toxic" either...I'm not in their head, idk why they chose to play that way or maybe they made a mistake. I can't count the amount of times I led the killer to my team on accident just trying to get away. if you choose to be salty and overcompetitive and assume that was on purpose, that's a you problem. Cutting off toxic people helps too. After I did that my time with the game was pretty good vibes. Even had lots of players bring bps and let me escape when others DC, being friendly/slowing down snowballing games to allow both sides to get points...the game was only toxic when my own mindset was toxic too. expect a bad time and thats what you're going to get every time.

@AaronDukeGame I am somebody who has never played Dead by Daylight until a couple days ago. I started watching Ohmwrecker play the game and in turn, found SpooknJukez then you. I've mainly been watching Spooks and your content for the last couple years about the salty ttvs and the toxic behaviors, yet I still find myself so excited to play the game. I know how stressful competitive games can be and at times, it can be very difficult to remember that it is just a game and the point is to destress and enjoy yourself. (I am not saying that you cannot enjoy playing a game if your purpose is to be competitive. I feel that the majority of people naturally feel this way because of it being a natural human instinct, to compete, survive, and win.) I currently have a few hours into the game, but mainly have been playing as a killer. It is very difficult for me to play as a survivor just starting out. There is too much going on and to focus on that I was upsetting my team in the few survivor matches I played, I just deemed it unplayable until I can find some friends to play with me and help me learn the game. So far, I have run into a few people that are foul, but I do not take it to heart at all. I truly have been enjoying the game, the sound design is incredible, the atmosphere is very well done, and I find myself getting spooked (yes, even playing as the killer. I swear, those crows scare me the most out of everything.) I don't stream and I don't use social media (only discord, but I tend to hide offline) so I know that my words don't really amount/count for anything. Be that as it may, I just hope that I can reach one person with a new player experience into this game and community and help spread positive vibes. -Thanks for reading my TedTalk (if any of you did) EDIT: My display name is Partheniki and I hope to see you in the fog

There are some interesting perspectives offered in the comments, the one that truly caught my eye was about "it is in the game, it is allowed" logic. And that is where problem lies imho.
It is not about using these mechanics/items/perks. It is about HOW you use them. Few examples: Crouching, making noise (and many more) is not meant for people wanking their egos at exit gates and rubbing it in until last few seconds of endgame collapse (yet many see it every day, often every other match). Flashlights werent made to macro click and be as annoying as it is humanly possible. Perks werent designed with an intention to lock the other side in torture bully simulator. Basement wasnt made with an intention for killer to stay there with insidious or turning it into a deathtrap of no escape, intention behind mechanic of downing a survivor is not slugging entire team and letting them bleed out for fun or out of spite, or as a revenge, etc.
I find it funny that this community tends to weaponize the most normal features of the game and when called out, their major "uno reverse card" argument is "but it is in the game, it is tool given by devs so I can have fun in any way I desire, so screw you, you X/Y main" even if that means the other side might suffer due to the someone elses pettiness. I have seen a few communities, good and bad, but this one definitely up there among the worst not because of the amount of toxicity alone, but because of its complete lack of any empathy for the other side, and selfish entitlement being bottomless source of it. That is only further reinforced by good old tribalist "us vs them" with "both sides" stuck in between, negatively labeled by both.
Those who possess such empathy are usually either in minority, quit, or just snap under the pressure and continue the circle.
Just my little L take, perhaps a food for thought.

Sure this game has so many blood boiling moments but I would like to share my favourite game I was in. I tried to play as Wraith (had less than 2 hours in playing killer at the time) and I was against a 'bully squad'. 4 flashlights, tons of flashlight saves, two hooks in the entire game but I refused to camp because I knew if they are this good in saving with fls they would know how to counter a camper so I just let them save and chased them around. No kills. I had fun anyway and the end chat was great. One of them actually apologized for bullying and I said the good old 'it's cool, it's just a game'. After that the chat was so wholesome and they added me to their friends list. It's not always so bad.
Besides as a survivor main I prefer a camping killer to a rage quitting survivors...

The only thing that I have trouble with while trying to play the game is by the end of the match. I always get an unknown error and I have to restart my game. I can only play one match with friends and i have to restart it. Sometimes my friends join me and I can't even see them or we are splitted in random parties. I would love to play the game properly but so far we're doing it this way with friends when we team up. Restarting our game. I was very unsure if I ever wanted to play this game when I started it but so far I have no regret even though there are errors that I encounter a lot. I still love the game. The devs made an awesome game.

@@AaronDukeYT ah ok fair enough ,I love ur channel and that's my favourite series of vids I've seen I think just because of your takes on them and how you seem to be one of the only creators I see do them kinda vids ,people just need to be nicer to each other and realise it's just a game

As a player of both, sadly most of the salt comes from the survivor side. i think there should be some more stricht penalties for toxicity

Been playing DbD since the first week of release. In no other game (including mobas) have I been harassed by a flood of anonymous accounts weeks after a match took place. Blocking only does so much and I refuse to make my profile private to cater to them.
Though to be fair, I haven’t experienced this in the last 2 or so years. I haven’t really played Killer nearly as much either. It went from 90/10% Killer/Survivor to 1/99% Killer/Survivor. I’ve done it all and I’ve seen it all. Mains of both sides are the problem but I can count on two hands the amount of overly toxic Killers I’ve faced compared to the limitless angry survivors I’ve seen.
Edit: Unmade a giant block of text.

It's more about people being overly sensitive these days, words like toxic / insrert x word + phobic are thrown way too easily,,,i played league on its peak years and boy dbd community feels like a a group of kids being mad cuz mama didn't buy them ice cream

I feel like a lot of this game's problems stem from a certain killer we all know and either hate to love or love to hate that is bottlenecking everything from perks to gameplay in general. That killer.... Is the Pig. The pig needs some massive nerfs that way this game can function better and other killers can have a chance to receive buffs while perks also can receive buffs. But those perks on Pig are just too good. If she just wasn't in the game, maybe. MAYBE. this community would survive

I cant play killer because the bullying will infuriate me. I tried using ghostie once and i had a swf with flashlights and flashbangs. I ended up slugging them just to end the game.

I play the game a lot, but I’m not in the community. I don’t interact on Twitter or really anywhere. I like my group and I like learning how not to be in the game from others like this but that’s about it.

Dbd has such a good concept with popular characters, i hate playing the game because of toxic people. It just ruins everything for me

I feel like this whole idea of DBD being the MOST toxic is kinda wrong, it's toxic sure but there are much worse communities out there. Like say Rust or Call of Duty.

  • @BathtubGoat

The amount of general sportmanship towards archive challenges, being silly, and loose adherence to a code of conduct is something i only found in dbd. The longer someone has played this game the more likely they are to be in it for silly nonsense and that is directly opposite of other communities. I stayed here and not in many oither spheres because aside from squeaky wheels here and there I have had overwhelmingly positive interactions with the people I meet, and that is just not found elsewhere. So when people compare it to other Moba games or shooters and claim its worse i absolutely dont understand how they came to that conclusion, aside from maybe not being in that community for long enough. The diversity and antics of this game sold me on it years back and im staying put as a result.

I actually ran across this ttv like a week ago. And actually we got to talking and everything. And we're friends now :D. I have the video of our 1v1 on my channel. ( with their permission of course. This game can definitely be toxic.... But tbh what game isn't??? There's always some kind of toxicity somewhere.
