the only maintenance I ever do on any of my aquariums is to clean the front viewing panel.
if your substrate is dirt capped with sand and planted heavily enough, nothing else is needed . I don't even do water changes on most of my aquariums , just top them off once every few weeks.
about half of my tanks have a sponge filter , the other half have no filtration , on 55 gallon has a hang on back that just barely moves water as it has pothos growing out of it and is pretty much completely full of roots.
the fish are all healthy and seem happy , sometimes I will find a new baby swimming around , most probably get eaten , but the occasional one survives.
I had a 40 gallon start leaking out of the blue one day, it had been set up for 3 or 4 years , covered in pearl weed and pennywort .
when I originally set it up I put 6 glowlight tetras and 8 khuli loaches in it., when I emptied it due to the leak there were 11 tetras and 20 loaches . all those fish are still alive accept 1 tetra and I think she just died of old age.
I seldom feed my fish , maybe once a week or so I'll feed them some omega one color flakes, but mostly they eat little creatures living in the tank with them.
I only keep small fish and do not heavily stock my tanks . I throw in some leaves every few months mostly white oak, and southern magnolia . there's lots of mystery snails and pond snails, scuds , some ghost shrimp , seed shrimp and other smaller little creatures.
incredibly enough red wiggler compost worms will burrow down into the substrate and live just fine . sometimes I'll see a planria on the glass , but usually a fish will eat it if it stays in the open too long.
started off doing this as an experiment and it just took off, might not work for everyone , and none of tanks are what you'd call aquaecapes ....theres a half inch of mule in the bottom of them and they're kinda dirty looking , but I like them.
