In 2016, Ismael BORRERO (CUB) came home from Rio with a gold medal around his neck and a reputation for being one of Cuba's finest sportsmen.
But after that win, weight control issues, a series of losses, and a suspension hurt Borrero’s reputation and forced him to refocus his training.
Borrero aimed Tokyo 2020, surrounding himself with the best coaches - including three-time world champion Mijain LOPEZ (CUB).
Borrero, a ’15 world champion, entered the 2019 World Championships in Nur-Sultan up a weight and without a world medal in three years. In Borrero’s way: world champions Artem SURKOV (RUS), Frank STAEBLER (GER), Hansu RYU (KOR) and Rasul CHUNAYEV (AZE) and start-up Mohamed EL SAYED (EGY).
In the end, it was Borrero’s six-match gold-medal-winning tournament that restored his honor inside the country he loves.
