  • Catherine of Siena (25 March 1347 - 29 April 1380), a lay member of the Dominican Order, was a mystic, activist, and author who had a great influence on Italian literature and the Catholic Church. Canonized in 1461, she is also a Doctor of the Church.
    She was born and raised in Siena, and at an early age wanted to devote herself to God, against the will of her parents. Despite Catherine's religious nature, she did not choose to enter a convent and instead she joined the Third Order of St. Dominic, which allowed her to associate with a religious society while living at home. Fellow Dominican sisters taught St. Catherine how to read. Meanwhile, she lived quietly, isolated within her family home.
    St. Catherine developed a habit of giving things away and she continually gave away her family's food and clothing to people in need. She never asked permission to give these things away, and she quietly put up with their criticisms. She made herself known very quickly by being marked by mystical phenomena such as invisible stigmata and a mystical marriage.
    Music: Anders Holte - 'Full Moon'
    Alberto Rivera - 'Angel's Song'

    Oh Yes;
    to be cloistered in the love of light.
    Indeed, I feel so vulnerable in this huge world.
    For me it is not to hide or be against the worldly expressions.
    But this deep longing pulls me inward and more into nature with all its voices.
    And listening to these poems confirm me to do so.
    It brings me moments of fear and at the same time a deep feeling of belonging.
    Trust, I keep reminding.
    Deep gratitude for all these texts and to you, Yayasara

    Though I really like the "consecrated" poem, it is unfortunately probably not an actual poem from Catharina of Siena. The poem comes from the book "Love Poems from God: Twelve Sacred Voices from the East and West " by Daniel Landinsky and is attributed to Catharina of Siena there, but I can't find any other source that claims it was written by her. Ladinsky is a notoriously disliked figure by scholars of Hafiz for his blatant falsifications of his poems. One professor, Omid Safi, even went so far as to say this: "Part of what is going on here is what we also see, to a lesser extent, with Rumi: the voice and genius of the Persian speaking, Muslim, mystical, sensual sage of Shiraz are usurped and erased, and taken over by a white American with no connection to Hafez's Islam or Persian tradition. This is erasure and spiritual colonialism [...] not simply a matter of a translation dispute, nor of alternate models of translations". If someone can find the actual original quote, I'd be happy cause I really like the poem, but I'm very skeptical given the authors history of falsification and bad translations. It all sounds too pantheistic to be written by a saint. Still like the video, though!

      Thanks for this. Yes, I am learning more about Mr Landinsky's "creations" in these various areas.

      If your sensitivity to a "white American" was matched by a true sensitivity to greater truth, namely, God and His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, I think the rewards to you personally & all who know you would be immeasurable & last forever 🙏

      @@MikeMakinneyI am not sensitive to anything, I'm quoting a professor and pointing out a misattribution or blatant falsification. The only relevance of him being a white American is in relation to his misunderstanding or forgery of Islamic mystical writings. Again, it's a quote, and besides I am christian. Sensitivity to truth also means investigating your sources and reading what the saints actually wrote.
