  • The 2017 Benjamin Franklin Medal in Life Science is being presented to Douglas C. Wallace. Wallace is a geneticist at the University of Pennsylvania and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania. Wallace pioneered research that proved human mitochondrial DNA is inherited exclusively from the mother and can be used as a genetic marker. In 2010, he became the founding director at Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania’s Center for Mitochondrial and Epigenomic Medicine. Douglas Wallace’s curiosity about mitochondria has yielded tremendous insights into human biology, from our past history to our future health. bit.ly/2nsL1BC
