  • This is a simple, step-by-step tutorial for how to make a face mask that features adjustable straps (not elastic), wire piece for nose bridge which provides a more contoured fit, and midweight interfacing which acts as a non-removable filter.
    When laundering your mask, it is recommended that you lay flat to dry.
    List of Materials:
    - (2) 8” x 8” fabric - 100% cotton
    - (1) 7” x 8” midweight fusible interfacing
    - (2) 12” pieces of paracord, 3.9 mm size
    - (2) craft pony beads, 9 mm each
    - 3.5" of 18 gauge wire
    - Scissors
    - Lighter
    - Needle nose pliers or jewelry pliers
    - Sewing machine or needle
    - Thread
    - Sewing pins or clips

    PLEASE NOTE: This design is NOT a medical-grade mask. It is a suggestion of how to sew a homemade adjustable fabric face mask. The CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies), especially in areas of significant community-based transmission. CDC also advises the use of simple cloth face coverings to slow the spread of the virus and help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others. Cloth face coverings fashioned from household items or made at home from common materials at low cost can be used as an additional, voluntary public health measure. Cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance. The cloth face coverings recommended are not surgical masks or N-95 respirators. Those are critical supplies that must continue to be reserved for healthcare workers and other medical first responders, as recommended by current CDC guidance.

    Thank you 100 times! Such a great option. I make masks for lots of people and they all complain about the elastic being too loose or too tight. Your idea will solve it.

    Thank you, I have plenty of elastic, but the ear thing hasn't worked out. I also have plenty of the other things you mentioned.

      My pleasure! Couldn't agree more about the elastic... adjustable is the way to go and many of the materials are more easily sourced, too!

    Love your paracord technique to make it adjustable. I’m not really familiar with paracord so when I did a search for it, the 3.9 mm size you suggested didn’t come up. May I ask please where you purchased it. Also is it stretchy, like elastic? Thanks so much!

      @Applebethl  Před 3 lety

      Hi Evelyn! Sorry for the delay. I purchased the paracord from a supplier on Etsy called Liberty Products. Look for the "550 Paracord Mil Spec Type III 7 strand paracord". It comes in a huge assortment of color options. It is not at all stretchy like elastic.

    I like the adjustments to the mask. What is the lighter for?

    • @Applebethl
      @Applebethl  Před 4 lety

      Hi Heather! The lighter is used to heat the end of the paracord after you cut it so that it doesn't fray over time. Thanks for watching!

      Hi! Yes, I'm using a 9 mm pony bead with 3.9 mm paracord. Thanks for watching and good luck!

    Love your video, thank you for posting it!! I have been using other patterns, but I'm really liking your design, esp with the beads! I just ordered some beads through Amazon! Can I ask you what type of sewing machine that is? I have a Husqvarna Viking (1985) I would love to update mine!

    I'm having a hard time after I get both loops pulled through the pony bead they're not even the paracord is not the same length from the knot on both sides please help

    • @Applebethl
      @Applebethl  Před 4 lety

      Hi Barbra! I'm sorry to hear you're having such difficulty with the ear straps. Typically, I tie the knot first so that the knot is in the middle of the paracord piece. Sometimes it take a couple of tries (I have to undue the knot and re-do) to get it perfectly centered. Test the length before you put the pony bead on by lining up the two ends. I find that it's not critical to have both "sides" of the paracord the exact same length. If they are within 1/4" difference, the mask should still fit properly. Also, if you are making a mask for someone with a larger than average-sized head, you should increase the length of each paracord piece to 13" (instead of 12" as instructed in the video). I hope this helps and good luck!

      @@Applebethl Thanks for the response your technique is one of the best ones I've seen I absolutely love it like I said the only little problem I have is getting both loops through the cord. Thank you so much such a great idea!

      @@Applebethl Hi it's not tying the knot with the bead that's not the problem The difficulty is when I put try to put two loops through one hole I get the first one through and it's very difficult to get the second one to go through that small space and I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on how to do this

    • @Applebethl
      @Applebethl  Před 3 lety +1

      @Barbra Apologies for the delayed reply. After making literally hundreds of these and having to source pony beads from a few different places, I've learned that not all pony beads are the same! Some seem to have a "thicker" wall to the bead, thereby making the hole slightly smaller. In any case, I use a very small screwdriver to push the second piece of paracord through the bead. For those pesky beads with smaller holes, I have even had to cut the paracord at a sharp angle, then heat slightly so it doesn't fray, then push it through the bead. The beads that work best I found in the craft section at Walmart. The brand is "GO Create!". I hope this helps!

    The nose wire IS not very good, would like the wider nose wire!

      Thank you for your feedback. You certainly could substitute the wire for a wider nose wire!
