The reason you wouldn't look a gorilla in the eye is because certain animals like dogs and gorillas take eye contact as a challenge. The reason it works on big cats is because cats rely on stealth and will not attack prey no matter the size if it is looking at them. Also when you fall from a long distance it would be better to land on a haystack because due to the surface tension of water it is as hard as falling on concrete from certain heights.
