Proof that Itachi was Jiraiya's Informant on the Akatsuki

- A theory that seems to have been discreetly floating around the naruto community for awhile now is the idea that Itachi was Jiraiya’s spy in the akatsuki or was at least his informant. I’m surprised that this theory hasn’t caught on more because the implications of it being true are pretty comparable to a lot of the other really popular fan theories for naruto. In fact this theory is so under the radar that I forgot to put it in my final naruto mysteries ice berg despite originally wanting to include it. Of course the top comment on that video reminded me of my mistake, so here I am to rectify it. On the surface level of this theory most people will just say that makes sense or that makes no sense, but I have found some evidence that makes this a lot deeper than any discussion I’ve seen on it so far. In fact I think it fully decides whether this theory is true or not. I’ll present all the facts we know first before giving my opinion, because this does go a lot deeper than I had first anticipated.

Okay but even beyond that. Kashin Koji's Flame Technique of summoning inextinguishable flames is a callback to when Jiraiya captured a speck of Amaterasu for study in this scene
you know, if jiraiya could figure out that future sasuke was indeed sasuke, it wouldn't be that hard to accept that he knew the truth about itachi's massacre.
I know this whole theory is not confirmed and will never be, but I like it. In my mind, this will always be what was happening behind scenes. Plus, is kinda poetic that Jiraiya was the most important person to Naruto, mirroring the relationship between Sasuke and Itachi. Also, the arc when both Itachi and Jiraiya die has the coolest opening in Naruto and is just about the grief and pain of our two main characters.
I mean, it just fits.

I don’t remember if this is an anime only scene but when Itachi put that woman under genjutsu to “distract” Jiriaya wile Kisame and him confronted Naruto would’ve been the perfect opportunity to leak info to him.
Plant the intel into the woman and have her released it to Jiriaya via genjutsu
But then that could blow Itachi's cover which Itachi did not. He didn't even what naruto knowing the truth when he was reanimated and was no longer a spy.

Itachi saying that they were going after the fourth hokage's legacy it was one of the coldest lines back then. I distinctly remember giving a good "YOOOOOO" when I 1st read that
jiraya actually knows all the members of the akatsuki, he says almost all of them are on the bingo book and that they are s rank criminals, and then says to wich there is itachi
I think it makes sense. Itachi could not care less for Danzo who was the leader of Root and it would have been very hard to relay info to Danzo on a regular basis without severe risk because Danzo very rarely left the village, but Itachi would not have cared being found out at the end as he chose his place to die so making sure that the Leaf had all of his info was the only thing that mattered. So, Jiraiya who shared Itachi's stance on ninpou and was a roming ninja would have been a much better collaborator. It is even possible that Jiraiya never met Itachi once but accepted anonymous info as a source.

The thing is, I don't think Naruto would be incapacitated or in bandages for a week. Even that seems too long for him, he has a natural healing factor from being an Uzumaki and Kurama healing factor. I ALWAYS got the impression that Jiraiya showed up either that same evening that Sakura was there, or at most like 2 days later.
Yeah it was most likely the same day or so. Jiraiya had no reason to wait once he got that intel.
I think this is quiet literally one of the coolest fan theories because of how plausible it is yet requires you to connect dots.
Jiraiya was essentially the spy master of Konoha.
Itachi was running the most covert spy mission for the village.
For arguably the smartest character in the series Itachi bumbled his way into the Leaf and started giving information on the Akatsuki ? No he had to consider Kisame so he gave information in front of Kisame without Kisame realizing it.
To me the fact Jiraiya knew about the 3-4 years all but confirms it was Itachi. That is very high level and deep information for Jiraiya to just stumble upon.
To add Orochimaru and Kabuto KNEW Tobi was not Madara. They didn’t know who Tobi was but they did know Tobi was not Madara. If Orochimaru was leaking to Jiraiya he would’ve told Jiraiya about Tobi.
Itachi was one of the 2 highest official members of Akatsuki. Between Nagato and Itachi they along with Konan and Zetsu knew the true pecking order of the Akatsuki and Nagato openly admits that he never knew what Itachi was doing.
Itachi was likely outside of Nagato chain of command because he was personally recruited by Obito and not Nagato.
It’s a HUGE coincidence that Jiraiya just knew about Tobi and or Madara being alive when only Nagato and Itachi knew this or could even assume this because they are the members in the Akatsuki and the only living people actively interacting with “Madara”.

The fact that Itachi cannot just go into Hidden Leaf makes Jiraiya the perfect candidate to leak info as he is always outside Hidden Leaf. Secondly nobody else other than Itachi could’ve known much about Akatsuki other than Orochimaru. However by the time Jiraiya gets info about Pain - Orochimaru is already dead. For someone outside of the organization to gather intel about Akatsuki is almost impossible as they have very strong sensory type ninjas and they rarely meet in person. They often communicate through that weird jutsu.
The moment I realized Itachi was a spy working with Jiraiya was when they made their appearance in Konoha. The way he attacked Kakashi and indirectly leaked their purpose was questionable. Also when Itachi had a showdown with Jiraiya (I know it is plot armor), but the right timing of arriving on the scene and the way he stared Itachi eye to eye was questionable. Jiraiya is a smart shinobi and he knew for a fact that Itachi uses Genjutsu. I think Itachi programmed that genjutsu he placed on the female to inform Jiraiya. And he could have done it repeatedly over the course of time. Jiraiya way knew more about Akatsuki than any other character in the series. Though, Itachi might have been to careful not to expose himself because Kisame was really tasked to keep watch on Itachi. Itachi can program people under genjutsu and that is probably how he leaked info to Jiraiya.

When was this? Kabuto didn't know that Tobi was Obito. He just knew he wasn't Madara. Kabuto was placed into Izanami before Obito revealed himself to be well, himself, as well. Lol.

Well, Kabuto was spying on the Akatsuki for Orochimaru as they wanted him dead, so given his intelligence AND the fact he managed to find Madaras corpse, it's not a surprise he'd have figured out "Madara" was Obito

Hold on a minute, couldn't Jiraiya have got his info or gathered his intelligence by going to Mt.Myoboku to Gamamaru and have him look in his crystall ball that sees and records all that happens above ground..
Maybe Itachi's role as a spy wasn't about intelligence gathering, but purely about sabotage!?!

Here something else I think would fit this theory. Jiraiya is a man of understanding. When Itachi ran into Naruto in the war. He begged Naruto not to tell anyone about what he had been doing or the truth about the massacre. He probably asked Jiraiya the same thing. Jiraiya understood this desire and honored it. Which is why he never told anyone his source.
Lastly, remember how Itachi had that special genjutsu where in a certain range. He could project a weak genjutsu across a particular distance? That may be how he told Jiraiya.
One thing that could supplement this theory is that Jiraiya and Itachi were trading intel. Jiraiya wanted info on Akatsuki while Itachi wanted to know how Sasuke was going. While Sasuke was in the leaf village, Jiraiya had easy access to info on Sasuke, which is why Jiraiya seemed to have so much intel on Akatsuki in part one, yet seemed to be lacking in part 2 because Sasuke defected and any intel Jiraiya offered had a high chance of being inaccurate.
The first time we see Jiraiya and Itachi meet Jiraiya looked directly into his eyes, while Kakashi freaked out and told everyone to avoid them.
Orochimaru underestimated itachi, jiraiya was probably underestimating him too

The place someone under a genjutsu your spirit or skill has to be stronger than the one your placing it under. Otherwise they can potentially just break out of it thru sheer force. Jiraiya probably is one of a few that you can’t place under a genjutsu too easily for too long. His chakra is too powerful.

This is an old theory on forums. It makes sense in terms of motivations and the timeline. Unfortunately, a lot of people will deny obvious clues until Kishi literally spells it out for them.
The same thing happened to:
1. Minato is Naruto's dad
2. Tobi is Obito
Another theory in the same boat is the idea that the Senju clan dissolved by intermarriage with other clans (aka every Hokage has some Senju ancestry like Madara predicted).
Jiraiya believed the fox attack to be a natural disaster up until shortly before his death. Itachi was the only character alive at the time who knew the man in the mask used the Mangekyou to control Kurama and attack the village.

I have a question. If Obito for some reason reveal his plan to the Akatsuki, will they go along with his plan or oppose him? Obviously Kisame will go with Obito, and i think so will Sasori because deep down he wants to be with his parents again.

Seems legit honestly part 1 made it clear in my eyes plus jiraiya could’ve been the next homage around that time period and he was also the master of Minato and a student of hiruzen. jiraiya was the most informative and trustworthy of anyone itachi would truly trust in the leaf
If Itachi was Jiraya's inside man to the Akatsuki, then he did a pretty poor job conveying and useful information at all. They didn't know about ANY of the members and their abilities.
Itachi wouldn’t really have a chance to learn most of the other powers. It’s not like the Akatsuki host routine training exercises with eachother. Hell nobody but Deidara and possibly Orochimaru knew what Sasori really looked like, not even Zetsu
Well the only ones he was around regularly was kisame and it seems like every jonin in the leaf knew who he was and a good judge of how powerful he was but the cloud knew nothing about him
Itachi did not know as much about the akatsuki as you would think. Also if he leaks too much information that puts him at risk of being exposed.

When I read this title the first thing I thought was that Jiraiya didn't know it was Itachi, because ONLY Lord 3rd knew. Itachi may have had some way to anonymously deliver intel to Konoha and after his death, Jiraiya was the only one who knew how to get it or how to decipher it.
I have a question. How strong are the individual paths of Pains? Apart from the Deva Path who should be around Itachi's level, how strong are the rest of them individually?
And speaking of Pain, can Pain defeat the 5 Kage that fought Madara?
Yes pain can do it they would have no counter to a village destroying Shinra tensi or a chibaku tensi

Itachi and Jiraiya are such different characters but one thing they have in common is that they’re loyal to the village to a fault. Remember Jiraiya threatening Tsunade when he thought she was moving against the village? It is very likely that Kishimoto forgot to write this arc.

One thing that always baffled/bugged me was after Itachi and Kisame escape from Jiraiya after informing him Naruto was the prize that they sought; the whole week Naruto spent training to learn/master the Rasengan, he was always left on his own to train, when they knew two Akatsuki were looking for Naruto and weren't all that far away in the scheme of things.
Although I've just thought Naruto had signed a summoning contract with the Toads, so if he had been taken, it's possible he could have ben reverse summoned back to safety!
Tbf, they pulled the same thing in boruto during the time traveller arc. Jiraiya and Sasuke know that enemy can just teleport anywhere, but they still somehow decide its okay to leave naruto and boruto alone with their training

Jiraiya was the best insurance in the world for Naruto at the time, they wouldn't try again now that they know Jiraiya is guarding him. They have a discussion before they try to get Naruto, that just Jiraiya's name at the time holds more weight than theirs.
I always felt like the interaction was weird . Not just from Itachis part but it’s like jiraiya didn’t even try too stop them like he could have (saying he could’ve done more not straight up beat both of them )
I think it's likely Itachi just sent disguised/transformed shadow clones to leak the information. There's no real reason that Jiraya has to know Itachi is the source.
This would also make sense for making sure the information gets back to Jiraya specifically, as other villages knowing some of that information could be bad for the leaf.

Yea there is a real reason. When they went to the hidden leaf to target Naruto, jiraya shows up. Not only that, jiraya also had a scroll to specifically nullify the Amaterasu flames. He also knew right away that he wasn’t supposed to touch the flames. Idk if I’m 100 percent correct but I don’t recall there ever being any other forms of black inferno style jutsu seen or heard of in the anime. And since itachi is the only known user prior to sasuke, then that can only mean jiraya was tipped off. the only user of Amaterasu would also know a counter to his own jutsu especially, someone as calculated as itachi

Also it's pretty obvious that touching black flames that completely burned through the stomach of a toad known for breathing fire would be a bad idea.

who saw a Comrade die in it. So how is there a sealing jutsu that only jiraya knew to use for that scenario. I don’t think anyone else in the shinobi world ever encountered Amaterasu being that it was only a jutsu exclusively used by itachi at the time. I’m not to sure if black inferno was just a chakra nature like water fire and wind but I’ve never seen or heard anywhere in the anime or manga that other shinobi use black inferno style. I could be wrong so I’d actually like to know if my theory has no weight

I'm more willing to believe that Orochimaru was the informant then Itachi purely based on the reaction Itachi had when Kakashi confronted him and Itachi wanted to abduct Kakashi based on the information he knew. I'm not sure why people ignore that fact but that is what Itachi said.
Orochimaru actually have incentive to eliminate the Akatsuki as he stated so at least twice. Despite what the story has tried to do, Itachi doesn't seem motivated to protect the leaf until he places himself under genjutsu.
Example being his willingness to cripple Naruto who is the most valuable asset to Konoha. He straight up says let's take Kakashi. And the death of Asuma is avoidable if Itachi actually wanted to give Intel.
I just can't see a scenario where Itachi meets up with Jirairay and doesn't say, "oh by the way, Pain has a rennegon" yet we are to believe he mentioned an akatsuki timeline?

the fact that when itachi and kisame infiltrated the leaf, itachi had used tsukuyomi and amaterasu once and called it quits saying he used too much, whereas 2 years later when he's considerably sicker and weaker, uses all that plus susano' and several other jutsu against sasuke before finally dying. It's not too far off to suggest itachi used Tsukuyomi on jiraiya without anyone else noticing

my theory is that it was Orochimaru who gave Jiraiya the intel on the akatsuki and what they were doing Orochimaru was aware that he was tailing him after he fled the hidden leaf it would make perfect sense that Orochimaru would want the akatsuki off his back by using his old buddy to take them out lol
this is even further backed up by how orochimaru states he needed naruto an co alive so they'd kill a few more akatsuki for him lol
and then there is the scene with kabuto as well where he approaches naruto, hinata, and yamato in order to give them a complete roster of the akatsuki members and what their abilities are with telling them ofc that their were two others which he wasnt sure about those two others ofc being "tobi" and Zetsu.
but i do agree with though that itachi did help jiraiya find Nagato and Konan though considering that itachi was on deaths doorstep at that time where jiraiya tells tsunade he's going to the enemies main territory it makes perfect sense that he would want to cripple the akatsuki by taking out its strongest chess piece and its fake leader Pain. hell he even planned to deal with obito lol by implanting a time gated amaterasu in sasuke's eye so it would activate the moment he locks eyes with another uchiha XD
We do have that instance of Itachi putting that girl in a genjitsu when they were looking for Tsunade. Could possibly well be that Itachi did that often off screen to rely information to Jiraiya.
I have to rewatch this because I'm confused. My understanding was that Danzo and Tobi met and thus stated that he goes by Madara to Danzo? Also, didn't Tobi canonically also tell Itachi that he's Madara? Or that Itachi figured it out himself that Tobi was Madara and confronted Tobi about it when he discovered him sneakily roaming around the Uchiha district? I also thought that Obito was aware that Itachi was operating as a spy, as he explained to Sasuke? I need to revist all of this? I feel like I'm tracking this properly, lol

There is no evidence that itachi shared information or Intel with konoha because he is a GOOD and talented spy. Otherwise he would not be a poor spy. A Man of sheer will and discipline.

If true it would’ve been really interesting to actually see Jiraiya as an Edo Tensei reacting to Naruto knowing about the truth behind the village and Itachi, and the complexity of having to confront that your village and people you idolize are capable of doing terrible things and how Jiraiya would react. Too bad Kishimoto didn’t really have it in him to do it (Kabuto even says he can’t since Jiraiya is in the ocean despite the fact that Manda 2 can swim in the ocean and he brought back Deidara who was VAPORIZED)
I think in the anime, Kabuto used Deidara's blood on a shuriken that Sasuke used to pinned down Deidara into his falling C2 Dragon.

Arguably, Deidara lost a large amount of blood at the sand village and during his confrontation later in the arc. Not that Kabuto may have had reasonable access especially with zetsu on cleanup duty, but there is another stretch there
Amado probably snatched up Jiraiya’s body before Kabuto could get to it . There was a base of Kara that was secretly in the Rain Village and it wouldn’t surprise me if Amado saw the battle between Jiraiya and Pain and got Jiraiya’s corpse to make Kashin Koji .
Deidera’s blood was everywhere. And shinobi know every part of the enemy is useful. Kabuto or orochimaru probably got it back then
I always thought itachi wa jiraiya's informant. However I would like to argue that to me personally it is more likely who informed danzo was not jiraiya or itachi but actually orochimaru. They both had a relationship through business and it makes sense to me. Plus itachi has always had beef with danzo so i find it hard he would give intel to him knowing who he is. I feel jiraiya wouldn't inform danzo for similar reasons to tsunade not liking him.
Ive always said itachi actions in his 1st appearance in the village made no sense for him to be a calculated evil psychopath sasuke made him out to be. He gave out way too much information to Kakashi while letting him live. He didn't even try to kill anybody. He didn't put Naruto his main target in a genjustu immediately n took his sweet time "battling" sasuke n yet we were told he killed his entire clan in 1 night
I actually assumed it was Orochimaru, but this makes just as much sense. Besides, we never get a timeframe for when Orochimaru left them

I watch Dygoknight and he floats this theory a few times around, don't think he ever really said that he believed in it though

So imo the biggest detractor for this whole theory (and I’m sure people have brought this up a bunch but I didn’t look thru the comments) is how Itatchi was a “traitor” that slaughtered his entire clan to grow more powerful. Danzo is one thing, since the mission was a direct order from Danzo but absolutely no way in hell was Itatchi feeding information to Jiraiya, at least not directly. On indirect clue, which you mentioned was “bad guy monologuing” that he did when they went to “capture” Naruto. And maybe Danzo feeding information to Jiraiya that was given to Danzo from Itatchi. But that’s as far as I see it going. Again, Itatchi didn’t even want sasuke to know the truth, therefore he wasn’t gonna “pretend” to be any type of good guy or man of morals to literally anybody. I’m sorry, Itatchi is my favorite character and it would be sick of him and Jiraiya had this kind of relationship behind the scenes but, nope.

Been saying this for yrs. This is precisely why Jiriya knew so much about the Akatsuki, why itachi fell back even though he had Kisame next to him both against kakashi and Jiriya. Jiriya is an expert in espionage and itachi was an expert ninja playing both sides and never really wanted to damage the leafs military force so it’s only right both of them were in an alliance

I don’t know why he wouldn’t know. He was the original choice for Hokage, so I’m pretty sure Hiruzen woulda told him. That said, in the anime at least, the portion of his encounter with itachi and kisame has him think to himself that he didn’t know itachi could burn through the stomach of the toad, which implies he actually did think they’d die there.
There is certainly a decent amount of evidence but I am still on the fence for 2 reasons. If he was the spy he could have given the abilities of most if not all of the Akatsuki. The second and less problematic reason is that with his abilities he probably could have gotten way more intel without getting caught if he wanted to.
I dont know people even have to dig so deep into it as itachi is a rouge ninja from the leaf an jiraiya literally gave a piss poor effort to keep him trapped unless he was actually trying then that would make him weak for not being able to keep him trapped.

This is a big what if but hear me out. What if when Jiraiya and Itatchi met in the village Jiraiya let Itatchi put him in Tsukoyomi when they made eye contact. In reality it lasted a few seconds but in Tsukoyomi it could've lasted a few hours. Itatchi could've told Jiraiya what he knew while in Tsukoyomi then in the blink of an eye it's over and Jiraiya has all the Intel Itatchi knew up to that point. That's why Itatchi told Kisame they should leave. Not because Itatchi was scared of Jiraiya (popular argument for Itatchi vs Jiraiya) but because business had been done and it was Itatchi's excuse to leave. What do yall think? Plausible or is it a stretch?
Nice theory, but haha, Jiraiya was seriously talking about killing Itachi and Kisame, but it's clear that you don't know the manga kingdom and how spies work. If Itachi is a spy then he is a failure. The spy must come up with more valuable information regarding the strength of the members, the strength of their leader Bane, and the secrets of his body.

You're underestimating Jiraiya's abilities. Jiraiya is not highly regarded. Obviously he got the information himself. In the end, he is the best spy and has tremendous analytical ability and experience.
It's also possible that Jiraiya has people all over the villages working for him, like Sasori has, I would say, a huge spy network.
But I'll admit, the video is fun and I was hoping he and Itachi would work together, but it doesn't seem right

If you ever do any serious writing, you will run into the issue where you have a lot of information you want to dump to the reader, and you'll try to do so, but upon later review, you realize that it's too much and it ruins the flow. You end up cutting out some things because you need to keep the story concise to advance the main plot and not divert focus too far into side issues. This is doubly true if you were writing for a weekly serial manga and had extremely limited time and space to tell the story. But as an author, just because you choose not to tell the reader something doesn't mean you abandon the idea. Instead, you find little ways to keep that as part of the lore of your world without having to devote any extra time or space to explaining it.
Of course, we will never know if Kishimoto really intended this to be part of the underlying lore of his world. But just because something isn't said doesn't mean the clues don't exist.
What about how jiraiya knew that sasuke was safe from orochimaru when he talked to naruto at the hospital. Was it kabuto who linked that or?
That is possible because they could have wanted jiraiya off their back for the time being. This could also just be an instance of jiraiya being a good spy. I'm not sure.

it's possible Itachi told Jiraiya info both directly & indirectly, but just never told him about the Uchiha massacre. there are a couple reasons Itachi wouldn't've told him.
1. it was an Uchiha matter. it was kinda private and a sore spot for Itachi. considering he loved his family and was coerced into killing all of them.
2. he may have just assumed Jiraiya already knew. Jiraiya was a very smart man. privy to a lot of information already. and considering he was basically one of the elders of the Leaf, tho not literally: it would've been a safe assumption.
and 3. Itachi probably would not have wanted to implicate himself. even if he didn't tell Jiraiya that he was the one that did it, Jiraiya would've known that Itachi was the only one that could've.
I think when Jiraya and Itachi met in first battle for Naruto, Itachi used genjutsu on Jiraya and passed information to him in 1 second, thats why Jiraya wasnt too agressive against them on their fight and for same reason Itachi escaped this battle with him. Itachi wasnt afraid of Jiraya, he could get him extremely easy, Itachi was on another level with his susano and blade totsuka/mirror shield
