I knew someone who I went to school with who was an active Latin king. I last saw him when we graduated and the last thing he said to me was “you’re gonna see me on tv one day, stay safe bro I’ll see you” 5 weeks later he was shot in the face and died by a rival gang. Sure enough it was on the morning news. It’s sad, he left behind his girlfriend and his 1 year old boy. It’s very unfortunate he didn’t stop even after having a child, we all just want to live peacefully day by day.

My dad is a (nearly retired) Chicago cop and he said there were guys throwing gang signs during the Mexican independence parade. He told them “you can do whatever you want, just no gang signs” and they respected him. Nowadays, there’s too much animosity and morals have left the street scene so that would never fly.

Good looks on the guy asking if Tommy G wanted a vest. Goes to show that even gang member have a small part of them that have hearts and sympathy towards others. Most of these thugs are young kids with no guidance and poor discipline. Yes they do terrible shit and deserve the consequences of there actions, but arrested gang members doesn’t get to the root of the problem that creates systematic gang violence. It starts in the home, support system, education, communication, and opportunities for the non privileged. Love from Italia 🇮🇹

Growing up in California, gang life culture is everywhere and it’s so easy to get wrapped up in it as a child and many of my close friends were involved in that lifestyle and I can 100% say I only didn’t completely go down that path because my parents were around and they were a little strict, they needed to know where I was at and who I was with, if I was staying the night somewhere, they needed to know or meet their parents so I can without a doubt say having parents especially a father in the household is so important. I also was encouraged and loved playing sports so that also helped.

Education was the way out of that place for me and now I would say I live a privileged lifestyle in the western burbs of Chicago. I think what most people don’t understand is that sometimes you truly don’t have a choice and to survive you have to associate with “clicks”. The traffic was beyond insane, but the amount of people out celebrating their heritage was even crazier. 99% of it was people just playing music, singing, dancing, fireworks, and a general good time. There was hardly any major violence outside the gang centers, it looked incredible to be a part of. Regardless of what “race” the gangster is. They run from their country to escape violence and poverty just to come to another dangerous country with violence and poverty. The violence is just less extreme in most states here as it can get in central and South America. But being racist towards your other people because of a language/culture barrier won’t help.

The Latin Kings were founded in the Humboldt Park area of Chicago in 1954 by Ramon Santos as the Imperials, a Puerto Rican progress movement with the goal of overcoming racial discrimination. With the Latino community facing constant violence from Greek and Italian greaser gangs, the Imperials merged with various other Puerto Rican and Mexican street gangs to form the Latin Kings. They would later devolve, because Mexicans turned it into a criminal enterprise operating throughout the United States.

It's mad common. Not just in Chicago either. I mean, I'm from a small "City" literally right across the lake from Chi, called Benton Harbor and back when I was 14(I'm 29) we were carrying heat. I have little cousins who are 11, 14 and 10 who all 3 have heat and keep it with them pretty much whenever they leave their houses.

Had a Latin King come and help roof my crib. He’s still affiliated but said that life is bogus. You think they’re all down for you but when he got locked up nobody was sending him money, his own homies were spreading rumors and almost got him hit in prison. He said your best friends will eventually turn on you. Youngsters stay the hell out of that life. I asked him if his kids were members and he said hell no he’d beat their 🍑 if they ever even thought about it.

Grew up with a lot of these guys in this video and I used to hang with them daily until I was 14/15. I chose to go to college at Urbana but it is what it is, sometimes when there is blood that’s been shed or you don’t have the positive support system to look ahead and grind for a better life you feel as if you don’t have another choice but to join up. At the end of the day, everyone makes their own choice, life is full of other ways to make it out the system that is entrapping them.

I was born and raised in Little Village. I had a crazy childhood growing up there especially when you have a parent who is a gang member like myself. It’s sad how this mentality gets passed down. These people in gangs are brainwashed sadly. Theres many innocent bystanders who get killed in crossfire. The schools are crap and the kids need more resources here. It’s really sad that they are hurting their own race and neighborhoods. Praying they change their lives.
