  • Ian Herbert-Jones is sailing his 35-foot long sailing boat Puffin around the world solo in the 2022 Golden Globe Race. Technology is the same as back in 1969 when sailor Robin Knox-Johnston won the first race and if anything fails, Ian could be out of the race or even lose contact with race control and that would be fatal.
Victron Energy is providing the equipment for the race and Chris Dobson from UK Marine Electronics Ltd is donating his time to build it all.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
01:14 ⛵ The Golden Globe Race is a solo, nonstop, and unassisted sailing race around the world, covering 30,000 miles and lasting up to nine months.
04:08 🌐 The race has strict rules, including a prohibition on GPS, electronic charts, and modern technology, aiming to recreate the conditions of the original 1968 race.
05:57 🚤 Ian's boat, Puffin, is undergoing a complete refit for electrical systems, with Victron providing equipment for a robust, resilient, and modular power system.
07:08 🔋 The boat's electrical system includes lead-carbon batteries, hydro generators, and solar panels, along with battery combiners for redundancy and power source selection.
13:18 💧 Ian will rely on catching rainwater for survival once the onboard water supply is exhausted during the nine-month race, highlighting the logistical challenges he faces.
