I remember hearing/reading that there are three different writing(?) systems in Japan, Hiragana, Katakana, and I always forget the last lol and sorry.
Oh I remembered! It's kanji, right? Lol
But since the older gentlemen had to go to a book for the characters, either there are more writing systems, or that third writing system is rarely used, hence needing the book? Anyone able to fill me in? Thanks

Im assuming the older man needed the book is because there are over 10,000 different Kanji characters compared to only 46 for Hiragana / Katakana.
Kanji are more like words while Hiragana and Katakana are the phonetic alphabet.
The seal stamp is using all kanji, since they usually represent a name of a person and are used to sign legal documents and all that. Its pretty much an official signature / identification that you register with the government. Think of it like the wax seals used to seal letters in old western tradition.

no, wire cutting is totally on its own cutting thick and even the hardest materials. Laser cutting has its limits after couple millimeters.

I'm not sure how big personal seals are in any country but Japan, but if it's only a Japanese thing, BFD that Japanese are better at it than anyone else. Chances are, no one else bothers with such a silly object. Seals come across as a needed object because people are so ignorant that they can't write their own names.
Americans can do this if they wanted to. We have some pretty good EDM machines in Texas... just don't think we would bother with something so pointless when people can sign their own name with a cheap pen.
