Tech 21 DI-2112 Geddy Lee Signature SansAmp Demo

  • Merging the design of the original GED-2112 rackmount and the portability of the YYZ pedal, the SansAmp DI-2112 offers yet another new format that is designed to be equally at home on a studio desk-top as well as an amp-top.
    The Drive pre-amp section is based upon the versatile SansAmp RPM, for a wide range of sonic possibilities. The Deep pre-amp section offers thick, meaty tones. Saturation goes from clean in lower settings to increased harmonics and tube-like compression in higher settings. You can use either section independently or blend them externally direct to a mixing board as well as to two amplifiers.

      @@codyhansonbass It can be a sort of crossover. Because the left channel is only low and low mids (low pass filter). The EQ work only on the second channel so you can cut completely the low on it to keep only the mids, or even cut mids to make only the high end distord

    I send the channels through the separate channels of a QSC G5 and into a 4x10 Ashdown cab for the drive and the deep goes to a special made extended sub 15" cabinet. Since there is a physical difference in the cabs, I adjust the volume headed to the 15 so the 4x10 doesn't overpower it as they typically do when you use a single channel amp and run mismatched cabs.

  • @SG-dw1my
    @SG-dw1my Před 3 lety +6

    Terrific demo. Unfortunately, Tech 21 missed the mark for my purposes for the 2nd time. What I'd most like is a YYZ pedal with the addition of the Saturation control for the Deep channel. That would be perfect! On the pedal, the Deep channel is preset clean like the DI-2112 with the Saturation at minimum. It's the sound of the Deep channel with the saturation turned up that I most crave. The DI-2112 sounds terrific, exactly the sound I'm after. However, I only want that sound for specific songs. The DI-2112 is meant for someone who only wants ONE sound. I'd almost go for it anyway and run it into a power amp but turning 2 knobs for every volume change is ridiculous. There should be a master volume and the channel volume controls should be for balancing the channels.

      This one isn't really a pedal - it's just a DI box with a bunch of tone shaping and drive control built-in. The YYZ is the pedal "version", that can turn on and off this type of sound, with a decent portion of the controls, but it does not have DI capability and only has one output for the blended channels.

    it sounds sort of compressed, but i don't know if you have a plug in comp on it, youtube has a compression, and am not there playing it either....your thoughts?..........i guess people normally put compressors before drive sections ... but then your dynamics are flattened out into the drive section, which sort of makes less sense to me......does that make sense?

    "Geddy's signature Jazz Bass...or really just any Jazz Bass...right?" On one hand, "wrong," as one of Geddy's bass techs years ago on a TalkBass thread he made revealed that it seems some of Geddy's tone is due to a short in the bridge pickup of his original '72 JB; the best way to imitate that would be a capacitor in series with the pickup to cut low end from it, similar to old Ric 4001 basses & the "vintage" selection on Ric 4003. On the OTHER hand, Geddy's signal chain was so convoluted and playing style so distinct that by the time his recorded or live tone hits your ears, it'll sound like Geddy almost no matter what bass he plays.

    • @spynae
      @spynae Před 3 lety

      The Fender US Geddy Lee JB states it has custom-wound pickups to imitate his original '72, but I don't think it's possible to wind a passive pickup with enough output to not be drowned out by the neck pup while also reducing its bass response. Even then, you'd only get flat bass response, not bass cut.

      Lots of guys use Tech 21 gear as "always on" preamps, though. And most weekend warrior players (98% of bass players) would mount this on a pedalboard. I agree that it is a bit niche (it seems to make every bass sound "Geddyish" whether you want it or not). But I can totally see this selling - not as much as the regular BDDI line, but a good amount.

    • @nihalnayak5483
      @nihalnayak5483 Před 3 lety

      @@Andyanddiana467 Exactly. The BDDI is a proper switchable pedal with presets to get a range of tones. Only someone who is looking for an always-on Geddy tone for everything will buy this. I wonder how many such people there are.

    • @LJPV777
      @LJPV777 Před 3 lety

      Seems like there's a growing number of people that bring a DI to a gig rather than an amp if they have reliable FOH access. Definitely a more niche market than a stomp box, but if you've only got a handful of tones you need to access I can see the appeal of something like this. Of course having a switch wouldn't make this any LESS useful though
