"The Heller Approach" is an acting technique that gives actors a simple yet practical and solid foundation so that actors are ready and empowered with reliable and easily accessible tools to work in any medium. The technique and it's application is based on muscle memory and not on past personal experiences.
It truly frees the artist to access feelings and thoughts that are universal to all humans. An Amazing technique born from working actors and directors.
"The Heller Approach" is taught exclusively by Brad Heller. Group classes are available every Thursday night and Tuesday days in Los Angeles, California. Private lessons are also available via skype or in person.
Professor Heller taught for 5 years at UCLA before going private. He is an actor, director and teacher. Heller's teachings are based on the works of Don Richardson, who Heller mentored.
Don was an original member of the Group Theater, which was the nucleus of Acting in the United States. His fellow students were Sanford Meisner, Stella Adler and Uta Hagen, but Don was the only student from the Group Theater who said, "The Method is NOT what acting is about." He directed over 800 television shows in his time.
Richardson was mentored by Charles Jehlinger , who was one of the most important (even if largely unknown) acting teachers in America and taught for nearly 50 years at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Among his pupils were Cecil B. DeMille, Edward G. Robinson, Spencer Tracy, Hume Cronyn, Kirk Douglas, Anne Bancroft and Robert Redford.

    Lessons learned from you heller
Dont act by watching your own acting
Dont act in front of mirrors
    Dont perform but just react
Dont rush but take your own time
Dont say lines but feel it from inside and say
Have some pause and give some looks while in saying lines
Strength of character lies in eyes and heart
Dont show the urge to do things
    Take your time
Acting should feel like you do nothing
Reciprocate and react to your partner
Dont try to make perfect moments then you will caught by either in past moment or future moments rather be in the moments
Dont anticipate things to happen while acting
Thankss heller makes my life more meaningfull

For me as actor one has to be in relaxed mode
How to relax take deep breath through nose and hold for 4 seconds then breth out through your mouth quickly
Do it 4 times you will see how relaxed you are

this makes a lot of sense to me, but im wondering if you have any advice for memorizing lines? i do best to memorize if i rehearse it, but it's so hard not to focus too much on myself while i memorize

    • @thehellerapproach

Try memorizing in separate chunks of the script, and not the whole thing at once! -The Heller Approach Staff

Not necessarily! There are a variety of techniques for actors. Some work better than others. The approach at our school is non-method. Click here to learn more about our philosophy:

Really encouraged that you took this student aside to immediately propel him into a newer field. He must've come into this class with some serious dedication.
I'd be proud to be him because you just took his preparation and added classes worth of layering to his studies for being so ready for his reading.
It's like when Stanislavski says that you should relearn every part of being alive on the stage to rehabilitate or reincarnate who you are when acting. Eventually all of the mechanics behind being a person start to flow like a tuned organic symphony of emotion embodied in a trained reactive device.
I love the body's ability to react to sources of perception.
I have been training my ability to act for years, but have done 99% of it in my personal studying so I haven't gotten much group work to stride off of since I left theatre school.
But I am now objectified to find a scene partner and immediately start getting some real reactions to act toward.
It's good to have a polished imagination, but this video helped me to understand that it's better to be able to imagine a reaction out of someone else's knowledge in the through line.
