  • Since I've started live streaming with my iPhone, I've wondered if there Is a way to connect an Ethernet cable directly to the iPhone. The answer is yes, but Apple doesn't tell you this officially. In this tutorial I am showing you two ways of hooking up your iPhone and/or iPad with an Ethernet cable!

    Worked perfect for me the very first time!! Phone is Iphone SE. Used all Apple products as recommended. Added a Lightning cable extension (non Apple product) for the phone connection. Got the notification that it was signed into my home network :) Now looking to do something similar for my older iPad with the 30 pin connection. I use that one for books and movies and would much rather stream movies over Ethernet than WiFi..

    You can use 3rd party USB to Ethernet cables. In fact, you will get faster throughput because the apple ethernet to USB is only t-base 100 and maxes out at 100mbps. Using a gigabit to USB, you can easily get much higher speeds if you have a gigabit connection. I used a random one just now and got 170mbps d/l and 200mbps u/l.

    This is awesome! Direct wire is always faster and WIFI can bog down if there are several users in the house! I wonder if the powered USB would allow the iOS device to off load files to another jump drive (USB storage device?). So could I hook up a Lacie drive and use it to record to or save recorded files to from the iOS device if I'm not hooked up to internet.

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  Před 7 lety +1

      +My Pet I've done research into moving files this way. I've so far only found a few ways of sending most file-formats back and fort using wi-fi hard drives utilising their own apps.
      I am still researching this as I am in need of external file storage when working in the field doing interviews among other things.
      Sometimes I cannot rely on a wifi or a mobile network connection at all and then I could need a hardwired way of transferring data.
      Western Digital has a few wifi drives that work however I haven't had the chance of trying any of them out myself.

      The Corsair user app isn't the most friendly in the world either. BUT, if we're camping the Corsair works great for streaming movies through my iPad in the event of a downpour of rain! HA!

I shield off the ipad to limit RF and want to hard wire in rather than bluetooth or wifi.

  • @Tunnelfun
    @Tunnelfun Před 7 lety +1

    Anyone know if this works both ways? I'm not trying to get Ethernet on
    my iPhone but rather tether LTE data into my network. (basically a wired hotspot) (redundancy for if/when the broadband goes down (rarely)) I have more than 5 devices that need internet and some that are hard wired without wifi capability. Speedtest check of my LTE speeds in my area show it's more than capable to keep me up and running. My wireless plan includes 10gb tethering which would keep my network up for a couple days no problem.

      You should have persisted in getting assistance. That happened to me once and I called the Apple main office and got the help I needed . A few years later I found out that Apple had a bunch of imacs that were recalled due to a major issue. They actually called a local apple repair person who came to my home and ended up putting in about 5 new parts before it would work. It seemed stupid that they just did not let me get a new iMac but this was how they did it. I had had it for about a week.

      The powered USB hub solution is good because it doesn’t tax the iDevice battery since the hub is supplying power to the USB connected devices directly. Because I’ve discovered it that the USB3 to Lightning doesn’t do that. It doesn’t supply power from the power port to the usb connected device. What happens is that power is taken from the iDevice. I was wrong and I’ll be making a better video about his as soon as I’m done interviewing some third party iOS hardware pheriperal developers.

      @JakobHaq  Před 7 lety +1

      +chiefbucknell Yeah I think you're right. They started laying down fibre optic cables in the ground all around Sweden in the 60's I think (not sure, but somewhere around that time).
      We got broadband pretty early compared to many other countries and the connection speeds have increase dramatically over the years.
      We pay $50 dollars to get 100Mbit/s down and 10Mb/s up. Not all broadband providers have the same plans, but close enough though.

    Clear and helpful instructions, many thanks...! Question: Since the iOS 12.0.1 update my iPad Air 2 will not connect to internet via ethernet; everything looks ok in the system info, the ethernet connection is recognised, IP addresses (other than local default) assigned, but no applications will recognise a connection. Every other thing is the same as earlier in the set-up; could the iOS update be the culprit...? I have gratefully used this solution for years, and not being able to connect the iPad via ethernet will be a real problem. Any suggestion or observation is appreciated, thanks...!

      Whenever something like this happens make sure to restart your iDevice first. Then before connecting anything make sure that you follow the proper connection order. Connect the USB device to the CCK or USB3 to lighting connector first. If you’re using the latter connector then connect your Apple charger to it also.
      .
      After that you can go ahead and try connecting the CCK or USB3 to lighting to your iDevice. If it still doesn’t work then ... Yes, it’s very likely that the iOS update has caused this issue.
      .
      Stuff like this has been happening all the way back to iOS6 (when I switched from Android to iOS). Whenever there’s a big new iOS update my inbox and comment section gets “flooded” with questions about why “this” and “that” doesn’t work anymore etc.
      .
      I’ve had it happen to me too like hardware connection errors (USB) or apps not working etc.
      .
      This is why I always advocate holding back several months (not kidding) before updating to a new iOS version. That way Apple might have gotten their shit together and rolled out bug fixes. I usually wait 6-7 months before updating myself. So all I can say is wait for the next bug fix update to roll out.
      .
      Whenever a big update hits, ask yourself how much you really need it. Because if what you’ve got is working and you don’t need to update then why risking messing up your working stuff which something you don’t really need.

      Thank you kindly for your reply. 🌷 The steps you mention has been taken several times already. I am way more cautious when it comes to upgrading Mac OS. As iOS v12.0 caused no (apparent) issues I guess I did not expect the v12.0.1 update to (possibly) interfere...

    My setup using Camera Connection Kit and USB Ethernet adapter is running really slow at just 30Mb/s/8Mb/s. As it's a 10/100 Ethernet with no Gigabit support it should still run faster than this as my VMB line is 384/30. It could be the Apple USB Ethernet adapter?

      +Bob Simon Yes! Well it's has for me when using Hangouts, LiveStreaming apps, Skype etc. Technically there shouldn't be any problems at all with any app. The only thing is that you might get promoted with a screen telling you to turn on Wifi or to turn on f Flightmode. Just tap it away and Ignore it. That's what I do and it works for me. :)

I see it has nano sim which is no good for me because I have the old original standard size sim that fits nicely in my old Nokia E51. I don't want to cut the sim because I also use it in my old huawei internet dongle, that's the only way I get internet where I live.
    What is the best way to plug the huawei usb internet dongle into the iPad mini 2? will I need a power source or will the camera connection adapter be just fine?

    Ok, so to streamline the 'more of a mess' one can combine separate hub and ethernet-to-lighting adaptor into one unified device, as explained in the following video:
    'Apple Lightning to USB 3 Adapter + Combo 3 port hub / Ethernet'
    czcams.com/video/vnaEWwBY7Dw/video.html
    The issue is that for the ethernet adaptor to work it needs to support the Realtec RTL 8153 chipset, which don't require device drivers to be installed on your iPad/iPhone (which don't support the installation of 3rd party device drivers).

    Charging the device to a 100 percent and keeping it plugged to the power, doesn’t seem like it would be good for the battery.

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  Před 6 lety +1

      +PlayingInTheBand I'm guessing you're referring to the Lightning to USB3 connector? If you are then that update came out because iOS 10 was updated to support proper Ethernet settings inside the settings menu. But the adaptor needs to be updated for this. However, let me point out that updating to iOS 11 might make this setup up not work. I'm getting a lot of reports and questions from people about this. Apple will most likely fix it some time but who knows when. It's one of the reasons I'm still on iOS 10.

      +Jakob Haq Will the Lightning to USB 3 connector work with iOS 11.1 if the adapter's firmware isn't updated or does it make any difference? I'm currently running iOS 10.3.2 and my iPhone 5s isn't able to connect to the internet with the USB 3 connector that has firmware version 10.0.1. The internet connection works with the standard Apple Lightning to USB adapter, though. I would like to update to iOS 11.1 if the internet connection over the USB 3 connector works that way. My friend was using the same standard Apple Lightning to USB with his iPhone 6 Plus on iOS 11.1 and the internet connection worked fine with it.

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  Před 6 lety +3

      Daniel Lundberg I wish I could say for certain that it does work, but I can't. I'm getting reports from people telling me that their connections doesn't work after updating to iOS 11 with and without the adapter update. And this happens on various iDevice models. Everything from iPad Pro 2016 down to iPad mini 1 and iPhone.5's. Then on the other hand, there are reports from people having no problem, or even discovering that updating to iOS 11 has (rare) cases fixed this issue.
      .
      This is what's so frustrating with iOS. No matter how many tests I run with various iDevices, the conclusions are most times contradictory. This is why my advice is always, if you don't need to update, then don't. But if nothing is working I. The first place, then you don't have that much to loose by updating, since it can sometimes fix broken stuff. I really wish I could be more helpful. 😓

      @JakobHaq  Před 6 lety +2

      +Said Abdallah Apple updated iOS a little while ago with proper support for Ethernet connection and so if your iDevice is running iOS 10 or higher then you should be able to find a "Ethernet" meny option when you've got your iDevice connected to a USB to Ethernet connector. Just open up settings app, and look in the list for the "Ethernet" option, it should be right up there together with the "wifi", "Bluetooth" etc.

    • @NoSingleStory
      @NoSingleStory Před 6 lety +1

      Jakob Haq yes I know! However in the setting for ethernet there is no Mac Adress, only the Ip, Subnet Mask, Router... :( I need the Mac Adress for the internet admin in the student hostel. He needs to unlock my Mac Adress for Ethernet

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  Před 6 lety +1

      +Said Abdallah Sorry my bad. I just checked and it seems that the MAC address isn't listed where is should be. If you go into "General" then "about" and scroll down the Mac addresses for both WiFi and Bluetooth are right there. But it seems Apple hasn't implemented a way of showing Mac for Ethernet. At least not for me. 😓 Can you confirm?

    • @NoSingleStory
      @NoSingleStory Před 6 lety

      Jakob Haq yes you are right. 😓 That's definitely a gap in the system. I also asked a producer of those adapters. Maybe you can read the Mac Adress on the package of the adapter. If I know/ or hear anything about it I am going to let you know.

    Hi -great video, thanks. Is it safe to use the lightning 3.0 camera adaptor option with the 12W iPad power connector on an iPhone, if the device is to be ethernet connected 24/7 or will it potentially overheat (since I assume the power device is actually designed to be used for charging for 2 hours or less)?
    Also I heard that Facetime and iMessage won’t work in airplane mode, but will Skype and Voip work and is there any way to send and receive texts (or SMS to email) in airplane mode?

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  Před 7 lety

      +David Weir Happy you found the video useful!
      To answer your first question; I actually do not know if there is any danger in using the USB3 Lightning connector together with the 12w adapter for that long. I wouldn't recommend doing it for that long with the screen on. Having the screen on, draws a lot more power and a lot more heat will build up.
      I wouldn't even recommend using the phone for watching videos with full brightness on the screen while plugged into a charger for 12 hours. The chargers themselves can get really warm.
      Personally I've run setups like this for about 3 hours. Basically for a live streaming session.
      To answer your second question; Flight-mode actually turns all receivers and transmitters completely off. So anything that needs a phone provider or a wifi connection won't work. This includes (Skype, voip, email etc).
      There is one way though, and it is the method Shown in this video. By connecting to Ethernet, you are not using wireless transmitters or receivers. It's a hard-line connection. This way you are connected to the internet and can use stuff like iMessage, FaceTime, Skype etc.
      Hope this helps! =D
