- Steve Coogan & Philippa Langley are interviewed at The Lost King. The film stars Sally Hawkins, Mark Addy, Steve Coogan, taking inspiration from Philippa Langley the film was directed by Stephen Frears, executive produced and written by Jeff Pope, produced by Christine Langan and composed by Alexandre Desplate. Stefan Pape asks all the right questions.
Plot: In 2012, having been lost for over 500 years, the remains of King Richard III were discovered beneath a carpark in Leicester. The search had been orchestrated by an amateur historian, Philippa Langley, whose unrelenting research had been met with incomprehension by her friends and family and with scepticism by experts and academics. THE LOST KING is the life-affirming true story of a woman who refused to be ignored and who took on the country's most eminent historians, forcing them to think again about one of the most infamous kings in England's history.
The Lost King will be released on the 7th of October, 2022.

Bless you Steve Coogan. I watched while so many people around Phillipa smirked and then when he WAS found, quickly pushed her aside and said we found this, we did this. The same people who smirked. I was enraged.

Loved it! I was doing my own Richardian dissertation around the same time, and always believed Philippa. I too suffer from ME aswell as fibromylgia and I find it remarkable how strong she is...especially battling chronic fatigue and pain everyday. There's different scales of course, but to see it portrayed on film aswell as seeing it from her side was amazing, all whilst battling with so much oppression. Truly remarkable woman and I'm so glad her story has been told and Richard was found xx

It is really great to see Philippa Langley and Steve Coogan together discussing their movie, "The Lost King." As probably all of you know, in real life, Philippa Langley was the first, and only person who had the dream and vision to try and find King Richard III. This she so skillfully did, even through all of the difficulties that were thrown her way. For Philippa Langley was there in the mud of that first trench, on the first day, and within the first four hours, she had found the leg bones of the king. After all of this came the book, written by Philippa Langley, and Michael Jones, and I am such a lucky person because I own a copy of that very book, autographed by both Philippa Langley, and Michael Jones. And now, this great movie, "The Lost King." May the memory of Philippa Langley, and King Richard III be forever remembered throughout all history. Doctor, George Whitehead
My husband, a historian, gave me the book when it came out. We went to see the film on Saturday and enjoyed it very much.. Sadly, only one other couple was at the theater at our showing. Thank you to all the wonderful people who supported Phillipa on her journey.
@@gwynwellliver4489 Just so you know, I saw it in a big theater in Bend, Oregon at our annual film festival and there were quite a few people in the audience. At least 20-30. In a small town in Oregon, with many other choices to see at the festival. I'm obsessed with the film. Had no idea about the story.

This was an EXCELLENT movie. I saw it today, Boxing Day 2022. I’m going to buy the book and I certainly want to watch the movie again. I wish there were more movies like this one in our cinemas, like Steve Coogan said, decent. Thank you HeyUGuys for this interview : )

Even during the internment she was ignored. I know I didnt see her there and she should have been right at the very front during the whole thing and she was not there. I have been following Philippa since SHE found the King. I would love to be able to contact her.

The story of how Philippa discovered King Richard III gives me goosebumps every time I think of it!
Watching the documentary of the findings and then watching the movie though….completely different ‘truths’.
Lovely movie by itself but full of quite a few white lies and discrepancies being spoken as truths now. Definitely shouldn’t be classed as the true story of how Philippa found the King.
I agree, it was a lovely movie. However, from my understanding I don’t believe it was classed as a true story, I’m sure it has been promoted with the words, ‘based on’ a true story. I’m sure if the interview is re-watched you’ll hear how Phillipa states how she didn’t ‘see’ Richard III and Steve said something along the lines how he added some humour. And personally, I think Steve was giving Phillipa a voice in her role she played in Richard’s discovery. Thumbs up to him. There will always be some sort of controversy about any movie that’s ‘based on’ truth. I’m yet to come across a movie based on truth where there hasn’t been controversy. Even the amazing movie, ‘The Titanic’, caused controversy when it first came out and that was an amazing movie. That movie encouraged me to find out more about The Titanic, just like this movie has encouraged me to find out more about Richard III : )
@@catherinepatterson4720 unfortunately in quite a few promotions it’s been stated it “was the "remarkable, true story" of the find” and worded other ways that insinuate it was a true account of her experience. Phillipa has said herself “I have had to fight to get my story told and the film does this."
Biggest wtf moment for me was the press conference with the university of Leicester. In the documentary Phillipa is right up there on the panel and is given her dues, yet in the movie she isn’t included and is shunned by the scholars.
The documentary is freely available online so it’s so bizarre to me that Coogan has gone and written the story this way.
I do love a good movie that encourages people to do their own deep diving (Titanic pun 🤭) but so many won’t and will take the movie as what it’s advertised as.
My bite isn’t with the whole Coogan adding things for humour, or the main character’s interactions with the ghost of Richard, it’s the portrayal of the actual people and organisations who supported and helped her, they will be forever damaged by this.

Watched and enjoyed this movie yesterday with my wife who has ME. The portrayal of ME is problematic. What was Philippa supposed to be taking every time she got sick? There is no medicine for ME and you certainly can’t walk it of by getting some fresh air. I fact, walking is the last thing you would be doing during a flare up and certainly not running. Everyone’s symptoms will be different but MORE activity is certainly not going to help. How hard could it have been to find a consultant to help you with that? Seems like you would’ve found a way if you cared about the dignity of ME sufferers.

I went to see Richard 111 laying in state and I met her without wanting to seem nasty the lady who played her is very plain where as the real Phillips is a very attractive lady

Hardy befitting to say lying in state when he’s been dead 536 years! They gave him ceremonial burial so that the city of Leicester can cash in on tourist money and totally ignored the fact that he could have well murdered his two nephews in order to take the crown! No one knows what happened to the boys in the tower, but they were under Richard’s protection and they just conveniently disappeared into thin air! This woman Philippa Langley was like all Richard III enthusiasts and refused to believe anything negative about him, even down to the fact that he had severe scoliosis…..until of course they discovered his remains!

Love the film. Obsessed with the film. Saw it first at the Bend (Oregon) Film Festival a couple years ago and now watch it over and over on Amazon. LOVE this film. Deepest gratitude to Steve Coogan and Stephen Frears for bringing this fabulous adaptation to the screen. Undergrad in History. So I understand that so-called "History" is 'written' by the conquerors'. Every historian knows this. After all, we are required to take Historiography for our degree! LOVE this story. Most especially the depiction of Phillipa following her "intuition" or "feelings"....as if that could ever be considered an inferior form of "knowing". The Leicester Uni "scientists' are depicted perfectly in the film. No wonder they were up in arms! Every true and brilliant 'scientist' knows that intuition plays a central role in discovery....um, can you spell Einstein? And that to invalidate alternative ways of "knowing" is death to the creative spirit of ALL discovery. That's why Phillipa found him, and they did NOT. Even though they took credit for her work. Academented A-holes* (see Mary Daly...Gyn-Ecology: The Metaethics of Radical Feminism* for definition of "academented. Your welcome ) So finally, even more, deep, deep gratitude for your work on this. I'm sure you pushed this boulder uphill, both ways. Eternally yours, an American feminist researcher and truth seeker.
