    One thing to keep in mind with this song: it was Bowie's way of moving on from his previous personas as he moved into the future (hence the Major Tom references), as well as his drug problems. It's oddly autobiographical & introspective, while still being quirky & catchy. It was his way of trying to put his past to rest in a way that worked and was meaningful to him.

      The song is also a grower, and there’s an ear worm connection after a few listens.
      No not as good as many Bowie singles, but a relevant one for him.

      I thought the Major Tom reference was to what I thought was a failed mission by Britain to launch a man into space

    • @MarcosElMalo2
      @MarcosElMalo2 Před 7 měsíci +3

      @@PHLCoffeeSnob He uses Major Tom in a couple of ways. It’s a reference to Space Oddity and the character he inhabits in that song (a persona drifting further and further from humanity). It reveals the nature of that isolation: drug addiction (The sordid detail: Major Tom is a junkie.) And it also refers to drugs (I suspect Cocaine but possibly Heroin) as “Major Tom”, which your mother warned you about.
      I didn’t know about any British space program to put a man on the moon, but that’s another possibility. Does this have anything to do with the incident in the Duchy of Grand Fenwick?

    I love this song, it’s one of my favorites of Bowie.
    This is definitely a tune that will grow on you. Plus you are really missing out on the whole artistic experience to not see it in the video.
    By the early 80s some artists were crafting the video as part of whole experience. Bowie was one of these folk.
    He used cool club kids in this video and one of them was Boy George who became famous afterwards with Culture Club. The outfit worn by Boy George in the video was copied by Star Trek: The Next Generation for the outfit Q wears as a judge!
    I think of this song as part of a trilogy of 80s songs that are sequels to Space Oddity along with Major Tom (Coming Home) by Peter Schilling and Why Me by Planet P Project, that is Tony Carey of Rainbow’s solo project.

    also check out Bowie's forays into funk and soul: Try cuts from Bowie's Young Americans album with Luther Vandross back-up singers and David Sanborn on saxophone, like Somebody Up There Likes Me, Win, Fascination, Right and Can You Hear Me. Also Carlos Alomar funk on Secret Life of Arabia (Heroes album). His Let’s Dance album produced by Chic’s Nile Rogers (and it’s all good!). From Station to Station album: Stay. Also Black Tie, White Noise with Al B. Sure.…Tonight with Tina Turner... A friend of the the Black community - complained to MTV about Black videos being relegated to early morning. It's an "artistic" song, exotic layers and instruments with an avante gard intention, more than a hip song vibe
