African elephants deal with extremely high temperatures and travel great distances for food and water while Asian elephants live in forests with food and water easily available
Asian elephants are primarly grazers and finding grass in a jungle or forest can be a near impossible task. African bush elephants on the other hand are pimarly browsers and trees are easier to come by even in harsh environments like deserts. So one could argue that Asian elephants are the ones who have it harder
@bearclaw1051 yes but they said loxidonta africana, which are African Bush elephants. African forest elephants are a completely different species and aren't related to the comparison
British killed a lot of very big Asian elephants that equaled to any African elephant in Sri Lanka during the colonial period. So it's not really a fair comparison now.
I'm assuming you are referring to the Syrian elephant. That got very close to the size of a african elephant and likely if they fought the african elephant would still win just much more difficult than any other Asian elephant subspecies
@@K1ng_Squ1dZhe is right in reffering to the Sri Lankan elephant. It is largest living sub species of Asian Elephant today and ive seen with my own eyes many that rival african elephants. On average Sri Lankan elephants are bigger than mainland elephants averaging around 9 feet while Indian Elephants are at around 8.5 feet. Ofc this average is still quite inferior to the African Bush elephants who stand at a little over 10 feet on average. However their is a case to be made on seperation of the subspecies. Scientist Dr Dereniyagala in the past even tried seperating the Sri Lankan elephant into two subspecies saying that the Northern and Southern population on the island are genetically and morphologically distinct. He believed that the Northern population had grown to have longer limbs and stronger to traverse through the floodplains and marshlands which are common in the north due to large river systems. They are also subsequently larger cause the rich silt deposits harbour water planets, sedges and grasses far more nutritious than most resulting in the elephants bodies being larger too. This effect is also notable in two other elephant population today. The giant Terai elephants of Southern Nepal and Northern India where himalayan foothills create a giant floodplains habitat blocked off from the sea by the Deccan Plateau to the south. The elephants here too grow abnormally large with Giant specimens like Raj Gaj and Kancha getting to over well over 11 feet tall. Second notable example is the floodplains of Bostwanna in the Okavango Delta which has created again abnormality of larger elephants even for African elephants. These elephants migrate to neighbouring Angola and Namibia and it is their that the largest elephant of all time at 13 feet was shot. Coincidence, i think not. Dr Deraniyagala called this northern subspecies in Sri Lanka Elephas Maximus Vilaliya, Vilaliya in Sinhala means Swamp/Marsh elephant. Many measurements done by him at his time a century back gave frequent sizes of elephants from the clade of 9 - 11 feet with some nearly touching 12 feet tall. He and several other naturalist and hunters at they were the largest of Asian Elephants coming to rival the African Bush elephants in size. For example Harey Storey shot an elephant in 1907 from that area with a skull size height of 43 inches, the average African elephant is 35 inches so this was an absolute giant. One can see the photos of the skulls himself and youll note like the giant Stegadon and Paleloxodon of the past these bulls have a larger domed crest, this is theorised to have been extra area for muscle attachments to carry and move a giant head and tusks. Harey Story also gave an average circumference size of the feet of 59 inches while another hunter EL Walker, who also noted the abnormal size of the elephants in the region, found an above average of 64 inches circumference and Dr Dereniyagala gave his own average of 62 inches. An elephants height can be estimated with 90% accuracy with the time and tested method of doubling the foot circumference size to get the shoulder height and if we take these it gives average shoulder heights of 9.8 all the way to 10.7 feet tall. Indeed these elephants were on par with those of Africa. Sadly when colonials arrived on the country they made it their goal to destroy most of the wildlife we had over the 400 years of their stay. Before colonialism even with human habitation on the small island it boasted a population of over 20,000 + elephants. After the colonials left our country in 1948 they had rendered that to a mere 1500 animals with some hunters having killed 3000 animals singlehandedly. Due to the fact that in trophy hunting they go after the biggest and strongest individuals with the biggest ivory. These means those with the best genetics were wiped out leaving just a tiny population of the left overs. Due to this we no longer see the giants of the past and theuve been reduced in size. Also the northern and southern genetic difference no longer exist as conservation efforts made it a must to mix populations to increase gene flow. Now the population sits at around 7500 animals much better than what it was and a great recovery in just three quarter of a century. But sadly they will never be what they were. The genes seem so poor now that only 2% of the population at all even carries tusks which is tiny compared to around 15% in mainland India. Shows how much the genetics have been weakend. However it seems a few exceptional specimens from a time lost still survive. Their are a few tuskers left who seem to carry the genes of giants. Tusker Kawantissa is the biggest at all standing at 10.8 feet tall, Tusker Barana and Deegadanthu II at nearly 10 feet tall. Even the first elephant you show under Asian elephant is a tusker im familiar with called Sumedha who inhabits the Minneriya and Kaudulla national parks and he too stands at around 9.5 feet tall.
@@K1ng_Squ1dZbut yes Syrian elephants were as big if not even bigger. the Asian elephant are heavier for their height. African elephant migrates to different places and dominant bull elephant expand their genes to different parts . they have to face more challenges in mating season only the biggest nd baddest have right to mate in Africa because migration brings challenge even in mating season when many bull elephant from different reserves gathered in same place in search of partner. and asian elephant Don't have to face challenges like these because forest is limited to small area and migration can't be done so biggest baddest asian elephant can't expand their powerful genes that's why their size is small.
