Restoration of Rusty Caucasian Dagger

Hello folks! Today I will show you a great restoration! This is a Caucasian type of dagger called "Satevari", i.e. for attack. It's shaped like a dagger, but it's a short sword. During the battle, it was used as the main weapon and additionally had a dagger in stock. The finish and fittings of the scabbard and handle are the same, but the purpose in battle was different. This subject is almost 200 years old. The condition is terrible. Approximately 35% of the item has been lost. My task is to save it, restore it and show you that it is still capable of testing! And yes, this item will be sent to a private museum, it is open every day in the center of the old town. Well, let's start the restoration!
Firstly, using a spatula, I removed the rust layer and placed it in a rust remover. A couple of days later, I took it out, washed it, dried it. And started processing the cutting edge. The cutting edge has become thinner than a piece of paper, welding will not help here. With the help of a sanding machine, I sanded the blade and started welding the holes and the hilt of the sword.
After welding, I sanded the sword on the sanding machine and pre-decided to clean the surface with a sandblaster. After processing with sand, I found two stamps! These types of stamps are often found on large daggers. Next, I moved on to processing and cleaning the surface for nickel plating.
After mechanical treatments, I applied nickel to the sword, thereby it will no longer rust. Then I started making the handle, I used beech material and brass fittings, which I also covered with nickel. I painted the handle twice, to give an older effect (this you will take away in the video).
I made the scabbard out of dry linden wood. The sheath was glued with natural thin leather, the accessories of the sheath were also made of brass and covered with nickel.

In English, your spatula is called a putty knife. No insult intended, your English is MUCH better than my Georgian.
Great restoration. Your videos are very calming.
You should try using hide glue on one of your projects. Ever unflavored gelatin is a good glue. Just mix it thick, keep it warm and apply it with a brush. That stuff is TOUGH.

May I respectfully suggest you use a straight edge to trim the leather wrap of the scabbard when you are gluing it. Would give a cleaner look.

Truly remarkable work! The blade looked completely lost in the beginning, but you saved it with both technical skill and an eye for the artistic presentation.
You probably know this already, but I thought of it while watching: if you need to weld on thin steel, it helps to have a heavy plate of copper or brass under your work. This will pull heat away from the weld, allowing you to make longer and more secure welds in less time, without as much risk of burning through the work piece.

But you surprised me, finding a marvel under the rust.

I could probably add some metal to it using a MIG or Arc Welder
Art Class always told me that I could remove as much as I wanted, but could never add back
Machine Shop told me to ignore that rule

Отличная работа, Алекс! 👍 Кстати, этот меч (хотя так и хочется написать "кинжал") на бебут с прямым клином похож, их делали для артилеристов Русской армии в 1 Мировую наравне с обычными, правда, в небольшом количестве, а с прямым, потому что прямой клинок ковать легче чем кривой. Ещё скифский акинак напоминает. А вот метровой длины - это точно уже меч, пусть узкий и с кинжальной рукоятью, это как европейский палаш или шпага, разве что эфес навороченный ещё. В защиту эпоксидки - если есть, почему бы не использовать. А по поводу "чем возиться с этим, лучше сделать новый" - так это же реставрация, ведь в этом-то и дело чтобы попытаться восстановить старый, а изготовление нового это уже совсем другое. А 👍 обычно ставлю перед просмотром видео, т. к. в любом случае будет интересно. 😉👍 Спасибо за видео и больше интересных реставраций!

Отличный результат. Вопросы. Возможно ли восстановление клинка в первоначальных размерах, т.е. сохранения толщины, ширины и прочих параметров? Какие методы применялись бы при такой реставрации? Скорее предложение. Критика в комментариях в стиле "а вот старые мастера делали по другому", на которую вы терпеливо отвечаете, разъясняя "что, да как" наводит на мысль. А что тогда наглядно не показать как делали, пользуясь теми технологиями изготовления и материалами. Вплоть до клея. Я бы точно посмотрел. И да, почему сохранили рукоять вы себя спрашиваете. Думаю что по той же причине другие реставраторы оставляют как образец такой казалось бы хлам. А именно с этого образца восстанавливают первоначальную форму и узнают что за материал был. Спасибо.
