    Forever my Musical Heroes, met them when they were loading their van in Corby, and shared my chips with them too after the concert.

    There is something about this arrangement that gives me goosebumps. It seems that there are two independent pieces-- the singing against the horn-- joined together only by the drum. It creates a sense of tension, of excitement, almost like a battle is commencing or an adventure is just beginning.

      Charles Jr. Pike I think of music primeval, older than our modern understanding of it

    Hòbhan na hòbhan hó,
    Hi horó na hubhan,
    Hòbhan na hòbhan hó,
    The barge of Gorrie Crovan.
    Behind the oars a score so brave,
    A lusty score to row her,
    She sails away like bird on wave,
    The foaming seas break o'er her.
    Up she goes on ocean wave,
    Down the surge she wails O,
    Sing away the chorus raise,
    A royal prince he sails her.
    The royal galley onward skims,
    With magic speed she sails O,
    Aloft her silken bunting swims,
    Red Olav's Banner waving.
    The towers of Man we leave away,
    Old Erin's hills we hail O,
    On Islay's shore her course we lay,
    Though billows rant and rave O.
    See the island bent like bow,
    Kindly souls await us,
    The Castle hall I see it now,
    The feast's for us prepared O.
    Hòbhan na hòbhan hó,
    Hi horó na hubhan,
    Hòbhan na hòbhan hó,
    The barge of Gorrie Crovan.

    Ach, sorry, people, I had a senior moment in my last reply. The foghorn/sea serpent sound is probably made by the combolin, not a horn. I was spaced out, thinking that I would love to get that sound from my own horn, and forgot that the combolin has a unique sound.

    This isn't just haunting, it's kind of threatening--kind of what I imagine Orcs sing when they're being mellow.

      @maryryan3442 Před 6 lety +2

      But of course! Isn't it a well known fact that Roy Williamson composed a fair amount of wonderful music ( The Long Journey South, e.g.) as well as designing the lovely Combolins for Ronnie Browne and himself, and several other musical instruments too. Every one has our time to live, but, what a loss to the world Roy Williamson is, indeed.

    Beautiful posting, unsettling, in a good way.

  • @myaincountrie
    @myaincountrie Před 11 lety

    Roy's playing a combolin at :31, and I agree that it's a beautiful posting. That horn in the background gives the affect of either a foghorn or a horn that calls men to a gathering.

  • @qantas40
    @qantas40 Před 10 lety +2

    its not the combolin making the horn sound. theres nothing on either to make that sound.

  • @hafpipe

    Not a bad version of a Scottish Gaelic song.

    R W does not sing this well. He cannot hit the high notes. And the music is distracting.

      His voice sounds a little different than it usually does. Some how it adds to the ominous atmosphere.. very effective!
