I miss Layne, but the truth is that William Duvall stepped into impossible shoes and has won us over with true charisma and sincerity. He is so legit and let us all give him some love.

His smooth as silk laid back groove is a huge part of AIC's huge sound.
Sean Kinney is AIC
You're god damn right. Many of their songs have the square-ish groove where it's hard to shine, but some songs, like Them Bones or Would - his drums do an amazing job, and show his chops. I feel like many people disregard the rhythm section which is a sin.
@@xavierlagore5569 agreed. Sean is really hitting the drums hard on this one and he is dead on perfect. He's what the band needs. He sometimes reminds me of a combination of Phil Rudd and Lars Ulrich.

Sean has a distinctive drum style that I dig, and his drumming is integral part of this band's sound DNA. Underrated maybe, but not underappreciated by those in the know.
Duvall is a rock star. He fits this band like a glove. Lane was brilliant but so is Duvall. Some negative comments on here about him. You should see them live.

Rifle Twist people say change the name but the albums they've made are worthy of the title Alice in Chains. Other band's have kept the name and I'm always first to criticize this however makes no sense to change the name it's still Alice in Chains so much when I first started listening to them I confused some of the modern material for the 90s stuff.

It was so hard for me to listen to their old material with Duvall. But I gave a chance and listened to their new music and I was so blown away. I felt that Duvall was given a chance to stamp his own signature on their new songs. It made me appreciate the impossible shoes he had to fill.
People need to chill. Obviously Layne Staley, one of the (if not the) greatest rock vocalists ever, was going to be hard to replace, and damn near impossible to please the fans with his replacement.
But sadly Layne's dead, and if Jerry hadn't gotten the band back together, with a new, great sounding vocalist, we wouldn't have had one of the best rock albums of 2009 - let alone this awesome anthem.
Will's not trying to oust Laynes memory, let alone trying to replace him. He's a new singer, with a different style, and should be considered as such, and nothing more or less.

Duvall isn’t a replacement, he’s another member of the band. People seem to forget that Jerry is just as much a part of the vocal arrangements as Layne was.
Some annoying people are only happy when they are moaning about stuff.

They NEVER TRIED TO REPLACE LAYNE. They are musicians..this is what they do. You can't replace Layne...if anything they are honoring him.

I'm addicted to this riff! Trying to see how they accomplished the dirty grungy heavy duty metal sound on this. The other video didn't show them actually playing this so thanks so much for posting a live version.
A lot of the sound of this song is them bending into the F instead of fretting it. They bend the first fret a half step up, then release it, then bend the second fret a half step up. The chorus ("California, I'm fine") and post-chorus ("Ah ah ah-ah, tears to fill my bong") are all fretted, though.
Duvall voice really harmonize well with Jerry Cantrell's voice, I think Layne Stanley would be proud that Jerry Cantrell is keeping their AIC music alive in memory of him,RIP we miss you,love you and will never forget you😢🎸😎😍🤘🤘🤘
AIC's studio efforts are excellent. Make no mistake. But how is it that a band manages to write songs that ALL sound better live? One of the many reasons why this band is my favorite.

This A.I.C. song the chord progression & harmony vocals makes for some great hell yes hooks. And their pulling it off live with that slight pitch bend thing ! If I know guitar players the way I know guitar player's . If Jimi Hendrix was still alive he'd might say Hay could I jamm with you dudes that pitch bend thing you do is fricken cool as hell ! I remember seeing duvall on a vid for the first time. Can't remember which one but it was during the time I heard alice in chains had found a new vocalist. It had duvall come out and hit those vocals from this song, coming out from the shadows as the song started. And still to this the day that shit makes me want to grab my air guitar and bellow. Lol The guy is bad ass. Still love and miss layne but this guy was meant to be in aic.

Can't replace Layne, nor did they try, wisely. They chose a super talented singer and guitar player, William Duvall, to be a bandmate, share (wisely) the frontman job with Jerry. Listen to William SLAY the high vocal parts on this heavy tune... watch him perform and fluidly play guitar, and tell me he's not a f-ing Rock Star. Bravo!

There's a shit ton of harmonies in their music though... both old and new stuff! Cantrell is awesome but he can't sing both parts at the same time!
I saw this gig and everything sounded fantastic. The sound engineering was top notch.
I disagree completely. He actually does a fantastic job singing live. Sometimes his voice may waver, but he's much better live than most bands in the realm of the music similar to what AiC play.

I like it. You can never replace Staley but to squander the tallent of Cantrel and not let the music live on would be a crime. Staley lived and died on his terms, this is the price of freedom of expression and choice. The spiritual war we all fight, the blessing and the curse of our vices have brought us the ultimate joy and the ultimate sorrow. We who live for the sonic charge, feel the groove with our soul and understand firmly that there is a world beyond this one are the most blessed indeed.
Did he say, "we might see the Stooges, later?" Oh, man, I saw Iggy & The Psychedelic Stooges in about 1970, at Cincinatti Summer Pop Fedtival. By the way, AIC kind of went through loss of their singer, similar to Pink Floyd losing Syd. This lineup is amazing!

Duvall was basically thrown to the wolves. It was literally make or break for AIC after Staley's death. Struggled at first, but he found himself within the band and they're still around because of it.

My take is that Layne can never be replaced but as a fill in this guy is good! It'll obviously never be the same but no one can control that. It's no one's choice but the band themselves on weather they should continue on. I just saw them at 98 rock fest and they were awesome and on key in every song! So pipe down everyone!
