The war in Ukraine has saddened us all and lots of us are doing what we can to support Ukraine. It's a heavy feeling to be carrying around all day. If Matt and Molly's vlogs help relieve the stress a little bit and show us the beauty of Europe, it can't be a bad thing. We're all different and CZcams has all kinds of videos to suit your mood. Ok so fun fact, the reason most old towns are squares (like in Warsaw, Krakow, Poznan etc.) is that the cities were "settled with German law" - basically land owners used Magdeburg rights which were a set of medieval laws which regulated how cities worked. All the cities that were granted these laws were built very similarly to Magdeburg (so a square with the city hall in the middle). Gdańsk on the other hand was settled with Lubeck law, which was the other popular medieval municipal law - Lubeck has a one long street as it's old town and so do the other cities based on it. That's kind of an easy way to know which city was settled with which law.

Interesting fact, that not many ppl are aware of is that the part of Gdansk with Dlugi Targ is called Glowne Miasto ( Main City/Town) while actual Old Town is historically located east of it, closer to the main train station.

Gdańsk, Toruń, Riga, Kopenhagen, Antwerp, Amsterdam, Hamburg - all of these cities used to belong to the medieval trading company called 'Hansa'. For sure you'll find a lot similarities of these cities. Houses are thin because taxes had been counted based on width of a building's front - the wider front the more notable your house and shop was, you could sell more goods.

    *Fun fact:*
In the Przymorze district, there is the longest residential building in Poland (and the second longest in Europe) - 850 meters long, with approximately 3,500 inhabitants. Popularly known as "Falowiec" - it's actually the name of the type of building. Built in the Soviet era. Not the prettiest one (quite the opposite), but it's definitely interesting.

From Gdańsk it is close to Sopot and Gdynia and to the Hel peninsula. It's a pity you didn't visit this place in summer - in summer this region is really cool. And how do you like Poland and Polish food in general? Hope you can make a summary.

The historic city center (which is here wrongly called old town, it´s in fact the Main City) was fully reconstructed after the WW2. This part of the town was destroyed by more than 90% and was reconstructed using old paintings and photos. But it was not rebuild in the way it was just before 1945 but in the shape of Gdansk from the 16th century when the city was under the rule of Polish kings. The reconstruction was restricted to the facades of the townshouses, the inner part of the buildings were just communal flats with the standards from the fifties. Only few historical buildings like townshall or churches were fully reconstructed. The effect is still amazing, but due the war it is only a facade of what it used to be. But Gdansk is more than Main City. You shoud visit other parts like Wrzeszcz or the beaches in Brzezno or Jelitkowo.

Isn't it that Rechtstadt/Main City is basically the Neustadt/New City of Danzig - the extention of the Old Town after the Middle Ages to the south?
the last time I went to Gdansk I stay in an guest appartment next to St Marys Church, which extended over two historic-style facades. So the narrow fassades and gables down refelect the flars behind it. Plus the layout of the Main City after the war has another advantage: you have larg green courtyards now. I would image that it was much denser, houses were deeper before the war with more commercial use.

Fun fact. Before ww2 Gdańsk was called Danzig, under the Versailles treaty it was a free independent city state, like today Singapore. It wasn’t part of Germany. When Hitler invaded France the code name all the German troops were waiting for to start the invasion of France was “Danzig”
