This was so good! I am Italian/English on my father's side, and Spanish (from Spain) on my mother's side. I have tried so hard to find anything about Spanish folk magic, and besides from a few resources about the Basque region, which my family is not Basque, I haven't found anything. Apparently everything was destroyed by the Catholic church during the inquisition. So I could relate to what Dr. Puca said about there's not much out there about Italians, too. I am now looking at the Italian part of my heritage, and then will figure out where my grandfather's family is from in England and look at that. One thing that is interesting is my Spanish grandfather's family is from Galicia, which is Spanish for Gaelic, and I have found out there is a constant argument between the Irish and the Galicians over who originated the Celts and traveled to the other country, lol! Anyway, I find all this fascinating, and have purchased some of the books you have recommended and learning a lot. Thank you for what you do, and now I am off to check out Dr. Puca's channel and see that interview!

Hello! I’m spanish too (sorry for my English, im Aragonese), i have to tell you that there is tons of information about galician folk magic and witchcraft, the problem is that all is on spanish o galician. If you know spanish i recommend you the books of Carmelo Lisón Tolosana (a little bit old but very interesting) and “La profesión de las meigas” by Diego Valor Bravo (this book is dedicated to the galician witch hunt and sorcery practices). Also, you can translate the books if you want it! Italian and spanish folk Magic have a lot of connections because we are both mediterranean and of Ancient latin influence. And in the case of Galicia, they have a very rich folklore and an enormous mithology. Hope you find this useful!!

With regards to the discussion around overlap between practices in Europe, I found it interesting to hear Dr Puca say she's noticed more resonance with Eastern Europe! I'm Portuguese (the westest of Europe) and although I'm no scholar on folk magic in the slightest I do notice a LOT of overlap in my research on Portuguese folk practices and in the things I see people discussing in the community around Italian folk practices. I'll often hear about a practice from someone engaged in Italian folk magic first, and then find it reflected down the line once I'm able to find resources on Portugal (which is way harder haha)... Obviously this is a super broad point especially as they're both countries with very regionally varied traditions so take it with a grain of salt but I've just noticed it within quite a few things like the same protective hand gestures and charms, concern for the evil eye, a lot of the herbs used, and also the centrality of Catholicism and saints in the whole thing

I bet the Romani are the common origin for some practices found across Europe. My grandmother was a child in rural Italy in the 1930s-40s and she said her family would go see "the gypsies" when someone was sick or needed healing.

Oh! Thoughts on Eteuscan gods. We studdied them briefly in art history and from what I remember they were contemporaries of Helenistic Greece and the early Celts and they were super skilled craftspeople that would often make art and worship pieces for other cultures. But that aside! It's the first place we see the name Apollos

I think I have heard grandmas from Abruzzo(where I'm from) say something like "sha benedett'" which I think would mean "may you be(sha) blessed(benedett')" so "sa benedica" didn't sound that wrong but it is true that "sa" is the feminine article in sardinian, like "la" in italian basically. I live in Sardinia now, I should ask if they do say that for malocchio prevention.
It could be that you read it on Mary Grace Farhrun's book because I do remember something like that. She did say that she learned everything from a mixed italian and others neighborhood so it could be!

    • @ChaoticWitchAunt

i hope you found answers about your questions as in sardinia that practice is very closed, im from sardinia and sadly none in my family practiced so i don't have anyone to teach me and will have to rely to a stranger.. which makes it very hard.

    • @arurora5474
      @arurora5474 Před rokem

@@EudaimoniaCat ahh I see! To be honest I ended up forgetting to ask entirely. Not sure if this one specific thing is closed but it would make sense. Everyone has different views on this. I think in Abruzzo they would tell you what to say because so you too don't give them malocchio but I wouldn't know as I'm from a city where most people don't practice anything, including my family so I don't have anyone to ask just like you. I only connected the dots reading "italian folk magic" because I had heard the old ladies from the country side saying "sha benedett" after compliments and the authour's father is from abruzzo like me.

  • @memyselfandi1300
    @memyselfandi1300 Před rokem +1

My family was very "leave that stuff to the women" and even though that was the case, my grandmother would still tell me things. When she was gone things would just pop up out of nowhere and I would think to myself, "but the guys don't practice this?!. How?... Why??... Okay fine. Just rolling with it… Lesson learned".
Then I moved to Italy for a few years. One of my friends deeply Roman Catholic wives saw some Warhammer Fantasy figures thinking it was an alter and yelled "Look! Stregoneria! We must leave now!". It took about 10 minutes to convince her that it was a display for my tabletop miniature game. Little did my friends know I was actually gathering stuff to bring back with me 😂

The way I was thinking about you both and you have these videos come out!! BTW in Italy we are trying to structure more gender neutral terms (like instead of endings in o for masculine and a for feminine we have the x or * symbols or the letter schwa, which is already present in many Italian dialects!) but it's kinda hard because Italian is a deeply gendered language and because of opposition from older generations/institutions (Accademia della Crusca, sì tu). But younger people are more chill about it!
Ending my rant and thanking you both for this video!

I often think of Greco Roman gods as Barbies. For Example there is Aphrodite which equals the barbie and then there is the 1992 soldier barbie which can equal Aphrodite's epithet ,Aphrodite Areia, which means basically Aphrodite the warlike. So they may have different forms but they are nonetheless still that God or Goddess

@@JB__Edits I completely understand your frustrations and am trying to not write an essay of repeating information. I've been pacing around since I noticed the "25 minute" timestamp on your reply and I am trying to think of the best way to respond.
Firstly if you are not following either one of these ladies channels you should. It's probably the best idea to do so. (Also don't listen to the American based people in the comments arguing with an Italian Dr. that studies religion the occult, etc, etc)
If you want an initiation, you have to understand that the family based practitioners choose who they teach. Even if a person asks to learn, that doesn't mean anything. If they don't think anyone is worthy, their knowledge literally goes with them to the grave.
Get a photo of Nonno and place it on your West most wall inside your home. If you happen to know of any other family from Italy then also keep them in mind as well. Ya never know, things may just fall into place.

    many of them probably chose
saints because that´s the only option
    they were given!
    the minute they were allowed
    another option (without getting
    killed or punished) they chose
    that instead (without missing
    a beat).
    that´s the problem with religions
    (and other power structures)
they only want to allow you one
    option.
    it´s the classic bully mentality,
oh you don´t like my gods,
well i´ll MAKE you like them!
no i still don´t, i like my own
gods thank you very much (not into
bad people who pretend to be
    good).

listen to what they say but what
    they leave unsaid)
