- The EPCOT grand opening special is hosted by Danny Kaye and is a celebration of all that EPCOT Center had to offer in 1982. A cavalcade of stars and characters including Roy Clark, Alex Haley, Marie Osmond, Alan Shepherd, Dreamfinder & Figment and a young Drew Barrymore come together to showcase ideas of technology and world culture. The 21st Century is here!
So happy to find this Epcot video.
Same here. Interesting how much has changed since then.
Thanks for posting this. I remember EPCOT in the early days. There have been many changes over the years. I still enjoy spending time there. The restaurants are world class and Illuminations is definitely a highlight.
Please keep posting these old vintage videos!
I was just thinking about Danny Kaye today and when he enters my mind I cannot shake his intro song from this special. Also I love that IMDb has this special as his top "known for" film.
Man I miss what EPCOT once was and most of all, I miss the original version of Journey into Imagination.
Themeparkfanatic That actually didn’t open until March 1983.
It isn't getting any better in the past 7 years.
The Africa Pavilion was a great project to work on with the Disney Legend Ken Anderson as its Art Director back in 1980 to 1981. Although it was never built to date, portions of its design and artifacts spread to Explorers Club, Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World, Adventureland at Hong Kong Disneyland and it's new Mystic Manor.
Great info. A good idea never dies, but it certainly can evolve. Thanks for sharing!

Some of this is neat and it's almost like a scene from Tron.

Announcer
Beginning at 35:33 to 36:44 there's a segment with Alex Haley that says nothing significant about the upcoming attraction called Equatorial Africa, except that it doesn't exist yet. There's a tiny scale model of the proposed village and that's it. This 1min. segment of gibberish followed nearly 10mins of enthusiastic gushing over the "World Showcase" and its participants, which included 1 token Black person, while expounding on the notion that "the people's of the world were being represented here." Hmmmmm, world population 7.125 billion, as of 2013. With India (1.3 billion), Indonesia and Brazil combined totaling a half billion, and the continent of Africa equaling 1.03 billion, it seems to me that a whole lot of people have been left out and that the majority of them are of the darkest hue. The company blamed this failure on politics and economics, but somehow that just doesn't ring true. I wonder if there could have been other reasons so many people were left out.
