Just like what others have said, this is the simplest and easiest timing instruction video out there. Very helpful to me, thank you!
I like the way you teach salsa by teaching us to hear the beats in the music.
+Mike Garcia Thank you Mike. Please watch our last video it's an invitation to join 2 Live Salsa Classes Online on Sat, Jan 30th 2016 or find us at MySalsaOnline we will have good information for you! =)
What a brilliant simply explained should be standard for all salsa teachers sadly too many work on footwork and not timing with the subsequent results thank you will watch more!
This is the best demo of catching the beat and counts..so genius ..can not get better of this !!!!!
Wow, thank you. After trying to figure it out on my own for so long, I understood the beat after a minute and a half of watching your video,. God bless âș
This is great John!
I've been watching a lot of videos trying to understand this and this has been the best one this far, thanks!
Thank you for your comment Rknoops see you in the next videos! Joel
Absolutely true about the conga and the clave. I think the piano is tricky as in many songs it doesn't stress the first beat. The cowbell often gives you the first and the third.
+Juan Carlos Corzo Thank you for the comment! Saludos Juan. Please don't forget to check our last video is an invitation to a Live Salsa Class
I am a drummer, and in Salsa music i always listened to the "offbeats", trying to avoid the "one", but feeling it. In fact it seems only the piano plays on the downbeat, while most other instruments, even the bass and vocals, are missing the one. Thats different to brasilian music, i.e. But what i wanted to say, when i had my first rehearsals with Salsa dancing, i found it much easier to listen to the piano and the bass (if you can hear it), instead on all those many rhythm instruments, while dancing. Its giving more relaxed freedom in my opinion.
This is the video I've been missing!! Thanx!! Makes perfect sense.
Great precise information! Thank you
i play multiple instruments including drums and took salsa classes for 2 years, but i somehow still struggle with feeling the timing of salsa music
Thanks, Joel for this great tutorial đđđ
Bro thank you so much for your video. Finally I can be dancing like a salsa king soon enough lol. I'm a musician and a dancer at heart, salsa beat is challenging for me because I'm a ballroom dancer. But you made it where I can understand it now and jump right in not like a crazy white boy. Mucho gracias me Nuevo amigo
Joel this helps so much! Thank you!! â€
Joel really enjoying your videos I dance salsa on 2 here in Sunrise Florida and I noticed that beginners have trouble understanding what to do after the Cun-Cun sound because all of the instruction is focused on the two and on the six if people think of the Cun-Cun sound as the go sound meaning that as soon as you hear that you take step number one in order to get two step number two just a thought on my part it helps me hear the music when I'm dancing
This was really helpful. Thanks

Really interesting video!!! Thank you!
Thank you Spahn for your comment!
this is one of the best videos I've seen so far, my question is, can I use the first sound,, can I use the first sound, the piano sound to dance on2 do I have to always use the Conga sound to dance on2? I just seem to have an easier time catching the piano song over the conga... I am currently transitioning into dancing on2
Joel, How do you distinguish between the 2 and the 6 in the conga? I can hear the 2 and 6 clearly but not sure whether it is 2, 6 , 2, 6 or 6, 2. 6, 2, etc.
Very good
So helpfullll!

It takes time to understand be patient, it take time and practice. It's like learn a new language, at the beginning it's hard to understand but little by little the ear starts recognizing the changes of the sounds.
Many thanks, this video is awesome! Also what software are you using to separate the music instruments?
Thank you for watching and for your comment!
very useful thanx!

Great! Thanks. Looking for 'instrument placement in a salsa recording mix' - deadline for submission is TODAY! yikes!
Thank you for your comment, to distinguish the first part of the dancer count we using other instruments like Piano, clave, etc.
Once we detect the 1st beat of the 8 count we will know when is the 2 and 6.
Please search for Dance With Feeling I have more videos there! =)
It's a different feeling when you count than when you only listen to the instruments, try to follow the music without counting your salsa steps and follow the sounds with your steps. Don't give up you will see how one day will click and then you will be able to have the feeling in your dancing as well.
Joel
How do you know that when you hear the conga is a 2 and not a 6 or viseversa?
A talent i cannotđđ
Que bueno baila usted , Oscar Deleon. Listen the notes are different on 1
Thank you for watching.
Hi Joel..i would love for you to use your clave (sticks) and play the count Es; 1 and 4 67 ect for the 3-2 and 2-3 claves. Thanks.
I will be uploading more videos to explain more details about the timing in the salsa music with different instruments like the clave. Thank you for your comment and watching! =)
I love your accent!
:)
Havin a really hard time hearing that conga as 2 and 6. I keep hearing it as 3 and 7.
That's funny. Because I hear 2 and 4
VERY GOOD
+beakf1 Thank you !
loved it! thanks a lot:)
Thank you Abliz for your comment.
+JoelSalsa it's Aynur :)
+Abliz Aynur thank you for the correction, I was looking to tag you on Google plus :-)
Hi Joel lovely video could you please tell me the name of the software you are using?
Clave should be the first one and is the most important, clave set the rhythm of salsa. In this case he explained the rumba clave, which is not the most frequent in salsa. Any way the explanation is really good, I suggest it to find the bass sound it will be the strong beat, and the " Tumbao" .
No, he played son clave, not rumba clave. But you are correct that rumba clave is not common in salsa music.
From reading the comments below there is a lot of confusion.
The guy is talking East Coast Salsa, which on the West Coast is known as Mambo or salsa on 2. In general musicians are the last guys one should ask about dancing.
That conga slap was on the 3
on which number do you make the turn no. 1 or no. 5. Is there a still pictures showing different hand variations. It's hard to follow when the exchanges when dancing
grazie per il video .
what song is that? I like the montuno
What is the next video You mentioned?
Hello, do you know an app that seperates the instruments?
@Ivo its 2-3..5&8 or
235..&8 I believe
Good day Joel, the most important instrument in what they call Salsa is La clave that Origin is Cuban, also the conga that was created in Cuba. There wouldnât be salsa without La Clava ! I think you should mention the true origins of the instrument because they are Cuban Origins, remember without either instrument there is no Salsa
Clave rhythm originated in sub-Saharan Africa.
Hi. You can click on DanceWithFeeling link above in the description! Thanks!
hi, any one could tell me the name of the second conga song, timing on 2 & 6.
what is the name of the first song that came up?
Not understanding the conga. When I try to do the steps on the beat, the first beat matches the first step. And so on..every beat on 123 567. But Joel says it starts at 2?
donde estĂĄ la segunda parte?
Hi!! Can anyone provide the names of the songs demoed (?)
amazing video, super informative and fun! oh and you're really beautiful (irrelevant but true haha!)
I just dance, I think that people who are learning how to dance salsa, think too much about what they want to learn; and don't enjoy the music. In other words, they are counting. Some people have two left feet, also. Just dance and feel the music.
Name of the song is Que bueno baila usted , Oscar De leon
Is this on 1 or 2?
What is the name of the group and the song used for the piano sample?
The conga beat pattern you used is a four count, so its the 2 and 4 that you counted and not the 2 and 6. To have an eight count you have to use two patterns of congas beat, so then you've got the 2-4-6-8. Anyway i like the video. Greetings
Ehm, no? The 4 and the 8 have this little double tap...
Well, 2468 still keeps the timing.....
But for Dancers the instruction is that they have keep the beats of PAUSE 4 & 8
(6 steps within 8 beats of Music) this is the REAL Problem of Dancers, learning.
not the Music...............
WOULD YOU PLEASE LET ME LINK ME YOUR NEXT VIDEO
I can count till eight without a rest (between the 7 and the 1)
Hello Ivo the counts for the clave are:
1&4 67 for clave 3-2
23 5&8 for clave 2-3
Thank you for your comment and for watching!
Joel
Timing- moving the hips-its just hard. 123-678- is what I have learned. Are there different estillos differentes paises.
What count are the cow bells on?
Hello Melikai187 the strongest sounds of the cowbell hit on 1,3,5 & 7
Please let us know if you have any more questions :-)
Joel
Salsa is a name they used in the 1970 for marketing, Remember itâs all Cuban instrument and elements
When i get tired or lost from doing back to back cross body leads, my brain gives me a big middle finger and loses the timing. đĄ
Keep practicing. It will pay off !
Joel Salsa NYC. I hope so, thanksđâ
Count all your steps out loud, then you won't lose the beat even if you cross-body your way through the whole number.
