      Hi - Thanks for all the great, well researched information. One question: So you do recommend the 5700 XT w/16GB RAM? At least thats the model your best bang for buck links to just above...Almost sure you suggested sticking with the 5700 w/8GB RAM at the end of your review for most video editing tasks. Please confirm - cheers

    Thanks for this Max. I’ve ordered my 8 core, 5700, 10gb eth., 64GB ram on your thorough research. It’s so useful to see the cross section of cameras, and NLE performance. My situation requires using Adobe, FCPX, and Davinci interchangeably. Then add to that, Canon C200 for my own projects, and a mix of Fuji XT-4, Sony A73, Canon R5 for edit projects... so THANK YOU again, it’s really helpful!

    You do a very thorough amount of testing which is fabulous, one other thing I’d personally love to see is the addition of a Cycles render in Blender, Macs are typically terrible at 3D compositing but it’s getting way more popular now, not just for game creation but also photography and video work.

    And as capable as that new iMac is it’s a shame that it’s still thermally constrained. I think it has a K chip in it, correct? And you can’t even over clock it. What a waste.

      Technically this year it’s not a K chip and even if it was it’s thermally limited. With that’s said for most video editing takes now the CPU is not being hammered too hard so it would make an insignificant difference but would result in a lot more heat just like on a windows PC. With how things are going lately it actually makes sense to lightly underclocknor undervolt if you care about have a cool and quiet custom PC. Thankfully the 8 core performance shockingly well and the 10 core isn’t needed.

    I got a Mac Pro back in January, knowing full the cost-to-performance ratio was abysmal. It's fast, but you pay through the nose for it. But the absolutely key consideration that completely eliminates ANY iMac for me... is the built-in display. I do not want one.

    • @MaksimYuryev
      @MaksimYuryev  Před 3 lety +2

      Thanks! I don’t recommend eGPU’s for iMacs since to get smooth and proper video editing performance or for gaming it needs to be connected to an external display. If you use your iMacs display it works well for some things and not others and with that you will get worse performance because of the thunderbolt 3 cable throttling.

    Max - regarding the thermal management of the 2020 iMac and fan noise, for this video editors' matchup, how quiet was the 2020 iMac going head to head against the iMac Pro and Mac Pro?

    • @MaksimYuryev
      @MaksimYuryev  Před 3 lety +3

      When editing most of the time it’s just as quiet but when rendering/exporting or transcoding its louder. The iMac Pro is silent most of the time and the Mac Pro always silent. Last years 2019 iMac was super quiet but that’s because Apple throttles the performance a lot (this years i7 is way faster than last i9 and $400 cheaper) so if you want you could limit the performance yourself and keep it running quieter.

      With iMacs it doesn’t matter as much, since a lot less people know if there’s a new one and if so how much better it is (unless they are watching my channel lol). It’s also harder to time it because most of the time iMac upgrades are a surprise. I wouldn’t worry too much and sell after you get your new one. For iPhones it helps to do it early and you also know when the new ones are coming too.

    @ricardorgomez Před 3 lety

    Well done on the video. Yes, the performance on the new 5K iMac is just wicked and a fantastic bargain for what you get. My only issue is the screen. 27" is a very good, all-around size. But for professional photos and video editing, 32" is really the sweet spot . I think the next iteration of the iMac Pro will have a slightly watered down version of their 32" XDR Pro screen in there. And will just blow the doors off this 5K iMac in performance. It has to.
    I'm hoping Apple is thinking along my line for the new iMac Pro. Or a Mac Pro mini that's half the size/expansion but all the performance of the big brother. If not, this new iMac with an external 32" monitor can work for a while too. Though I'd really want the performance of something along the lines of a 16-18 core machine. Yes!
    Great time to be a Mac user!

      Rumours are that they will discontinue the iMac Pro

    • @ricardorgomez
      @ricardorgomez Před 3 lety

      @@lukewilliams7020 That thought crossed my mind actually. But I have two problems with that...
      1) Performance. As good as this 5K iMac is, it's not enough for creative professionals. I'm a fashion photography professional and have been doing a lot of high-end retouching lately using Photoshop. I love my little 13" 2020 MacBook Pro. If all I was doing was retouching, it would be completely fine. But if you have a movie playing in the background, have an eMail app open and maybe a browser open, the fan will kick in. This is real world use. Now, this new iMac will give me some more overhead. But not that much more. What if I was doing some automated batch processing from 2 - 3 event shoots in the background and wanted to start retouching with Photoshop or do some video editing and having other apps open? It would bring this new iMac to its knees.
      Some people would say: why didn't you get a 16" MacBook Pro then? Fair enough. However, that's a pretty big price jump too and I know I wouldn't need that much power in the field and wouldn't be powerful enough in the office. So it would really be a waste of money.
      2) Pricing. To get better performance from this iMac would require the Mac Pro if the iMac Pro wasn't an option. Price wise, that's a pretty big jump. Then you would have creative professionals complaining about performance options again. Like when we had the 2013 Mac Pro.
      So if Apple would discontinue the iMac Pro, they'd have to give creative professionals who don't have $15k to spend an option. I thought my ideas for an updated iMac Pro or Mac Pro mini could totally work. I hope I'm right.

      Louis Luzuka yes. I changed back to the glossy screen. I have a mix of spreadsheets and video/photos editing, so half of my time is dealing with text. If you’re doing mostly video, I think it’s fine.

    Keep saying you don’t need your Mac Pro bit you still haven’t sold it lol. That Mac Pro is better in so many ways it isn’t even funny. I know it’s ridiculously expensive but if the maxed out iMac and entry level Mac Pro with 5700xt were the same price there would be no question which would sell more.

      @@memzTV Adobe products take a long time to update. I'd try Final Cut Pro before upgrading the system. In a pinch I'd buy Mac studio M1max base model for video. It has special encoders and decoders for video. Actually double the decoders and encoders over the M1Pro chip. They come with 32Gb of ram on board and can be found easily on sale or refurbished for about $1800 and connect it to the iMac Pro as a screen. Test it out.

    Hi Max, what is performance like if you take three (3) H.264 59.94FPS files and put them in a multicam... I can’t find testing anywhere on that specific application. I have a Panasonic DVX200 camera from 2015 that shoots H.264 59.94FPS 8-bit 4:2:0. Let me know. Thanks. I’m interested in the playback performance only

    • @MaksimYuryev
      @MaksimYuryev  Před 3 lety

      4K files? The native decoder in the 5500XT - 5700XT can decode 4K up to 90FPS so you could do 3 streams of 30 but not 60 with little stress on the CPU. With that said, for more than that the CPU will take over and it depends on your software. FCX should be able to play it back smooth at full Rez.
