"Whoever wishes to foresee the future must consult the past; for human events ever resemble those of preceding times. This arises from the fact that they are produced by men who ever have been, and ever shall be, animated by the same passions, and thus they necessarily have the same results."
    ― Machiavelli
Alberto Giacometti (10 October 1901 -- 11 January 1966) was a Swiss sculptor, painter, draughtsman, and printmaker.
In this KENISMAN Hommage-video, Giacometti shares his knowledge and understanding in the interview taken in 1962.
"I've felt the need to try to account for what I see, knowing at the same time that I'm bound to fail, but it's only the failure itself that leads you to the truth." Alberto Giacometti

He explains perfectly what it is like to be an artist. I am always working, making drawings and painting every day. I can't stop because time is running out, we all die someday, and I still don't understand why and what is going on when I make these things.

Don't worry. We never die we have always existed and always will.

The difference between a spectator and a creator. It's never finished or done. The work continues from one lifetime to the next. He's so good at tying ideas together. Inspired and motivated by this every time I watch.

He is talking about a psychotic episode. I've felt that too, seeing the world as if it was the first time you are seeing it. It's terrible, absolutely terrifying. You feel you are going mad.

For me really that was a turning point in my life. I feel nothing was the same after that experience i had. I remember i was in a bus when it started to happen, i looked at the people and they were all stranges, although conciously i still knew i was surrounded by my friends and my girlfriend. Concious mind is stable in that moment, your knowledge of everything persists, but there is something wrong unconsciously, it's like a mixture of unconscious and conscious knowledge (material, memories) at the same time, absolutely terrifying. And no, nothing is the same in my life since that extraordinary experience. And i feel i will never become completely sane of that episode.

I can totally relate to what you're saying. It's a feeling of being kind of trapped, it's like you're in a dream, but somehow still awake. The world doesn't feel as real as it should.

Peppiatt stated: "I didn't dare go and knock." But why not? Why couldn't Peppiatt just go and knock on Giacometti's door and talk to him? I was looking at my most recent sculptures and it was obvious that they were far superior to the sculptures of Giacometti which are so embarrassingly bad, and no one really likes them, but art critics have to pretend to because they are obliged to just as they pretend to like de Kooning because they are obliged to. I am still waiting for Peppiatt to knock on my door but I don't think he dare knock: but it is his loss, not mine.

it is the constant attempt and failure in representing that shows a hint of the unrapresentable it is not at all what or how we wish to represent that matters.
