  • 🌟 Explore the captivating journey of Sam Taylor, an African American with a sixth-grade education, who defied the odds and changed the course of history in 1922 Chicago. 🏙️ From sweeping floors to sparking his interest in electrical work, Sam's determination led to the birth of the Taylor Electric Company, a beacon of resilience.
🛠️ Follow Sam's path as he installed doorbells and lights in the Motor Row District, leaving an indelible mark on iconic establishments like Blue Star Auto and even Al Capone's domain. The 1930s brought a head-to-head clash with "Umbrella Mike" Boyle, a battle for membership in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), local 1341.
🔧 Today, the Taylor Electric Company stands as one of the oldest family-owned Black businesses in the U.S., a testament to Sam Taylor's unyielding spirit. Join us on this visual journey through time, where each frame tells a story of resilience, determination, and the enduring legacy of Sam Taylor, lighting up the city of Chicago and inspiring generations to come. ✨ #SamTaylor #TaylorElectricCompany #ChicagoHistory #legacyinprogress Books I recommend for kids

It wasn’t smarter. They didn’t have all these education requirements for jobs like they do now. Before you could work your way up in a company and even become the president with just your experience. But now all you need is that degree. It doesn’t matter your experience. Meanwhile you have people in the company today who know the job far better than that person with the degree. Like they say when black folks start to show excellence they move the requirements up. My dad was one of these people. 4th grade education who rose to prominence in his business. My dad made the equivalent of 1 mil a year in today’s money. I’m too proud of my father.

I'm a child of the fifties . African american and black were names we chose to be called instead of negro !" We no longer wanted caucasians to name us ,so we chose our own name to be referred as .what's really a shame is people who make issue with this are completely clueless of the history of why !" We went through incredibly difficult times in the past . We were taught to hate our skin ,our heritage ,our ancestral lineage!" Color struck was a term we used to refer to our own people who favored lighter skinned individuals in our communities .That remnant of psychological programming is what sparked us to rename ourselves ,to show pride in our African ancestry regardless of the racial bias we experienced . Young people today are not educated to understand it took a long time to get to now !" To have generations who never saw a whites only colored only sign !'" Where racial bias is seen as an outlier that needs attention ,rather then a normal everyday way of life you'd be wise to keep silent about !" For those who were enslaved, brutalized , programmed to hate their own skin , and look to whites as their lords !" We proudly wore African american as a defiant reminder we have not forgotten ourselves and where we came from !" We wanted those caucasians to always have to say African whenever they spoke about us !" Not negro or colored as they dismissively referred to us in the past !"" I hope that gives you some context to consider !""
