#RyobiOutdoors How To Change Ryobi 40V Battery Mower Blade | Weekend Handyman
www.weekendhandyman.com
Just once I would like to see someone do a video taking the blade off a mower that isn't clean and new but has been mowing all season, not cleaned regularly, and stored in a shed, not a heated garage so that the nut has practically welded itself to the bolt. It's always so super easy to loosen and remove a nut on a brand new mower. Those are not the problem cases. No one comes to You Tube to find out how to take a nut off a brand new mower.

I linked to a video that's shorter - and the mower blade and mower has clearly been used. Also very good still closeups of how to ensure the blade holder (goes between the nut and the blade) is positioned properly on re-installation.
Your comment made my day. I was thinking everything you wrote. I sprayed wd40 on the nut and let it sit overnight. With the use of a block to keep the blade from turning I was able to get enough leverage to loosen it. My mower is 6 years old and lived in a shed it’s whole life. Also I am a woman of average strength so miracles do happen.
Thank you mr young! I’m a widow n need these type of tutorials. Husband didn’t like to teach me this stuff. It’s not hard. It’s just learning how to do it. So thanks again!
6 year old video still helping people out. Thanks!
Great tutorial John! I own this lawn mower also - I had my blade sharpened with a nice sharp edge, and this mower went from good to Great! Super light and easy to use.
Thanks. An excellent explanation. 15" worked great as someone else said.
Thank you for your time and support! Great video.❤
Great job on step-by-step. Will make sure to tighten week too. 👍🏽
Excellent video John, love the details and breakdown! Very clear, thorough, thanks!
i used as much force as i could to replace my dull single blade to the cross cut blades on my 40v ry401017vnm mower!! i am still going to invest in a torque wrench to make sure it is secured!!
Great video .. very well explained !
I found that the nut on my model fit best with a 15mm socket. The blade seems best for two seasons.
Yep, I noticed same thing.
Same for mine, even though the manual specified 13mm. Used a torque wrench, too.
same
Thanks for the information, just what I needed to know!
Word of advice. Do not use a 5/8in. Use a 15mm to prevent slippage. Use a wood block and wear PPE. Torque to 400in lbs. Easy job when it’s brand new. Little bit more stubborn when the lawn mower has been used. Otherwise good video.
Remember where its made. LOL Its actually supposed to utilize the 15mm socket. Fits much snugger. Less corner wear if you are using an impact. Im sure other people have said that but, i dont read comments alot. Good luck everyone .!everyone ! everyone!
Nice & helpful, but my Ryobi blade nut is 15mm.
Thank you! So if the nut is stuck that plate at 3:22 is the key to work with. Hold the plate washer towards the body of the mower and then work on loosening the nut. Seriously, why isn't that in the manual!
That looks so easy.... But it's a Brand New Mower!... Mine is 3 years old and I'm not getting anywhere 😪
Mine is a few years old also. I had to apply some torque but not too bad. I assume you've got it by now but try a couple of things next time. 1) Put a wooden block to lock the blade so you can fully focus on the nut. There are videos that do this. 2) Spray wd-40 to penetrate the nut, let it sit for a few minutes and try again.
Impact will help you for this. No effort.
Arent you supposed to use a torque wrench to tighten the nut?
Yes you are. Says so in the manual. I'm surprised that he didn't mention the specs.
I don’t have a torque wrench, so I looked for one that can provide 310-360 torque as required by the manual. It costs $199, almost the same as the mower. Crazy price!
Mine does not come off at all. Not even remotely budging
Wooden block and wd-40. I just mentioned this in another comment.
Is that the brushless push 40V battery mower?
Impact 5/8". Nope 15mm socket. Block the blade with a piece of wood jammed in the discharge
They must have welded mine on. I can't get it to move.
John Young is a DJ EXPERT AND HANDYMAN? Who knew lol
My blade won’t engage what is the problem??
Well, on my P1180, I block the blade w a block, turn the nut BUT the
nut & shaft spin while the blade stays jammed. Those idiots @ RYOBI
forgot to make some provision to LOCK the shaft while loosening the
nut. At keast a flat spot on the motor shaft where I could hold the
shaft w a wrench. My grinder has a button U press & hold while
turning the nut. I have to insert a screwdriver into the motor, hoping
I dont touch something delicate to lock the rotor while turning my
wrench. Im guessing it is only a matter of time before my
screwdriver touches something delicate & when I turn my wrench it
will break the motor. THANX Ryobi. Good Job.
!
Any loctite/threadlocker recommended?
NO
Mine keeps spinning when I try to tighten it. Why is this happening im holding the blade in place
i had to take all of the parts off of mine after my girlfriend ran over some clothes line and didn't realize (don't ask me how).so some people will need to know that!
How to keep the blabe from being upside down.
When you take it off, mark the blade edge to indicate top
@@joemama454 I forgot to mark this when I took mine off last night. Such a rookie mistake.
My bolt comes off but the blade is stuck
see my comment above
Mine is a 15mm
Looks simple enough....but when I replace the blade and tighten the nut using a wrench, the whole assembly turns....I can't tighten the nut! What happened? I didn't remove the blade, my lawn guy did, and he returned the sharpened blade for me to put back on. Why is the whole assembly turning? If anyone has some helpful comments, I'd greatly appreciate it.
My issue too! Need help asap. Can't even unscrew the nut now, because the whole assembly is turning.
@@mattbrown1154 I had the same issue, what ended up helping me was a bit of wd-40 on the nut. I sprayed it and let it soak in for a few minutes and then was able to tighten and loosen it. Hope that helps.
@@mattbrown1154 I had the same issue. It is because the metal plate is not aligned. Check video czcams.com/video/kEXkLSeUprQ/video.html
you either have the nut cross threaded and dont forget you have to hold it like when you took it off.if you were trying to be funny then good one!
I need to know how to replace belt on 13 amp corded mower
15mm fits better on mine
He put the blade on upside down .......
Is it possible with the circle and half moon guides? If so, what's the point of those.
Fake
Please elaborate, what is fake about this video?
What a good way to hurt yourself. You're supposed to use a block of wood for the opposite end of the blade when removing and replacing it. In addition, you're supposed to use a torque wrench when replacing the blade. This way, it wouldn't fly off during operation, or be too tight and crack the nut if tightening blindly.
real cute..not only is this new blade a PIA TO CHANGE,BUT I HAVE TO SHARPEN IT? WHY BOTHER TO BUY A NEW BLADE FOR THEN? baloney- i'll throw the lawn mower and blades out..it never cut decently anyway and can't cut more than 1.5" of grass..not enough power.. back to a Gas mower
It didn't come as sharp as he would like. You typically have to sharpen blades after so much usage regardless of the mower. Maybe if you started with a sharper blade it would cut better.
I agree! I have the same situation with my car. It ran out of gas and now won’t turn on. I’m gonna get rid of this car and get a battery model!
no pair of scissors, knife of any kind, blade what have you is sharpened to its full potential.im not sure of the reason but all blades need a little fine tuning .i work with leather and all my tools need a little love out of the box.
