    Holy buckets! They’re like pumpkins! I particularly like some light-colored figs. “White Genoa” is my favorite. Greenish yellow skin and a pink interior. Very fresh, almost tart taste. For a four-month old tree that tree is going to be an incredible producer. Plus they pass the Dale test!

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  Před 3 lety +3

      I imagine this fig would be much better caprified. Harvey's Robert's Golden Rainbow looks superior to mine from the pollination. If you like the light figs, you'd probably enjoy this. There is no complexity in the flavor at all. No berry tones, no "figgy"flavor...it just tastes like honey. Which isn't a bad thing. If you love honey, this fig is very "clean" tasting.

  • @StuffandThings_
    @StuffandThings_ Před 3 lety +5

    Ross Raddi did a comparison of YLN and Golden Rainbow, and they came out to be basically the same. I think that Golden Rainbow is probably damn near identical after researching around a lot. Some people even say its better. The one that is a bit more different would be Long Yellow, which is different from YLN but supposedly still quite alright. I just saved myself some cash and time and got a beautiful YLN plant from Restoring Eden nursery.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  Před 3 lety +4

      Some people say Yellow Long Neck is the same fig as Robert's Golden Rainbow. Some say they are different. No one can definitively say they are the same. However, they are similar enough that if you have one, you don't need to get the other. If you have Yellow Long Neck and are happy with it, I wouldn't get this variety because it'll be fairly redundant.

      Oh, they will be much larger next year, I guarantee it! The fact that they're already producing 60-100g figs in a 5 gallon bucket after 5 months of growth is a goooooood sign!

You can not describe the taste, you find it in the little village of Taxiarchis Evia Greece. Happy to see you got your hands on a RGR. I just got an already rooted one in the spring and Should have my first few ripe ones in the next week or so. Glad you showed a comparison of what they looked like at different stages. I wasn't sure how ripe I should let it go before I harvest. They are quite large but still feel fairly firm. I'll be posting my September Fig update this week.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  Před 2 lety +1

      Glad to hear you got one. It's an extremely large fig, so it feels a little different than the smaller figs, probably because the skin is much thicker overall. They start to get smaller when they ripen, because the water content decreases. Most figs lose weight as they become ripe.

      I would argue that figs have more varieties in flavor and texture than almost any fruit on earth. I can give you 20 different figs that taste absolutely nothing alike, so you can dislike many figs while loving many others. This is why I enjoy growing them in containers - so I can verify I enjoy them before I plant them in-ground. I only plant my favorites.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  Před 3 lety +2

      Many varieties of figs can produce a large fig here and there on a rare occasion. For a variety that consistently produces large figs, that's a lot harder to do. Robert's Golden Rainbow is definitely one of the largest varieties out there, though. If you want large figs, this is one of your best bets. Other good, "high quality" figs that tend to be larger are Coll de Dama Gegantina, Col de Dame Mutante and I-258. Those varieties will routinely produce 60+gram fruits, but even the "largest figs" will set some smaller figs here and there. My new Grigio fig tree is setting some pretty good-sized figs, too.

    Awesome! Were these pollinated? Also, just curious, since you’ve mentioned it before, do you know actual regions in cal that have naturalized fig wasp and have pollinated figs?

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  Před 2 lety +4

      No, they were not. They're just a standard, unpollinated, common fig. The fig wasp varies from place to place. Even if you're in a region that is known to have the wasp, you likely will not colonize it, because a wasp can only extend its range around 100 yards from a colonized caprifig. They're the size of gnats and can barely fly. Places that are known to colonize the wasp are the San Jaoquin River Valley, Sacramento River Valley, parts of San Diego, Riverside, and that Modesto/Visalia area in the center of the state that I know of off the top of my head, but I'm not a California geography expert by far.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  Před 3 lety +1

      I don't grow many honey figs, because I generally do not enjoy them and therefore probably am not the best source for that question. The most melon-y fig I've ever tasted is probably the California Brown Turkey, which is actually a purple fig. That fig, to me, tastes bad. It's the only fig I do not like. I think it tastes like a watermelon rind with a small amount of brown sugar on it. After that, probably Lattarula, which I culled because it couldn't handle my climate and every fig would rot.
      I'm not saying there is anything bad with melon-tasting figs. They just aren't my personal taste preference.

  • @andreasstylianou9025
    @andreasstylianou9025 Před 2 lety +1

    Dear friend, I think U need a little help from Cyprus. I was climbing on my fathers fig trees to collect the figs 60 years ago. I have a few fig trees on a piece of land which I didn't water, prune or collect the figs for years. But they are there. I will look after them soon, again.
    The most ripe one because it's open in the air and the flies can do a bad job there, we cut the 1/4 cylindrical and through it away, if we don't through away all of it. As someone can see on a large monitor there is something moving within the bottom of the fruit. If U look very close U might see what is moving. To some people that affects their stomach. If we are not sure, we smell it and if there is NOT a sour smell we might eat it.
    Similar with second fig from which we cut away the 1/6 of it.
    From the third one we cut very little, just the bottom part, where U inject them, Dr.
    Last information. The biggest enemy of the Figs is Water. The tree HATES the rain. Water enters the ones they start to ripe and destroys them. Why? The water mixes with the honey of the fruit. Affects partly the green ones as well if the rain consists. Milk and water is a bad combination. The tree gets the message that a winter is coming and fastens up the procedure to ripe them ALL before the winter stops the juices-milk moving. As I see your trees are at controllable size so you can cover them up with a nylon. Subscribed

      You can host the photo on an image hosting website like Imgur (just Google search "free image hosting") and post the link to the image in a comment. However, it's really impossible to identify a fig by looking at it. There are tens of thousands of varieties, and many are very similar, so if the variety isn't tagged, there isn't a way to know what it is 100%.

      Cutting season won't be for another 4 months in my neck of the woods. Cuttings are not taken until trees go dormant, so we still have quite a ways to go. I offer cuttings in January, and I always make an official announcement to my subscribers when the time comes.

      I will have limited cuttings come January. Because it is a first year tree, I won't get lots of cuttings, but I'll share what I have.

    My first YLN were about the same size, amazing flavor when they were fully ripe. Did you gave 184-15 another season? mine ripened a fruit out of the fig wasp area, but they are hard to fruit. Im hoping to get muchbetter fruit from both YLN and 184-15 this year cause I will put them on ground

      My Strawberry Teardrop dropped all but 1 or 2 fruits, and the 1 or 2 fruits that persisted were pretty bland and looked funny, almost like a ripe caprifig. I'm not convinced it is a common fig.

    These are not big fig. Big figs are from 150 to 250 g. i think you should look and search for bigger figs. Thanks

      You should consider that this is a 6 month old tree in a Home Depot bucket.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  Před 2 lety

      There was some SWD larvae in the bottom of one. Sometimes, it happens with figs, as well as blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, etc. They can be pretty hard to see, but they're harmless.

      This fig was on a 6 month old tree. 6 months ago, it was just a cutting. That is incredible. You cannot compare a 6 month old tree in a 5 gallon paint bucket to an older tree in-ground or in larger containers. Figs yield larger fruit as they age.

    Why is that one fig moving? I think you ate maggots man

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  Před 3 lety +1

      It's SWD larvae. I noticed that when editing. Often, they're too tiny to see with the naked eye, but the zoom lens can pick up the motion. This is why I bag them, but sometimes the SWD lays the eggs early. Usually, the figs will spoil when this happens, but every now and again you catch them early. A little protein never hurt anyone.
