Hi Danie. That barrister book case could be a real treasure. If you aren’t aware of her already, you should reach out to Angie , who has a CZcams channel called Transcend Furniture specializing in repairing and refinishing furniture. She does absolutely amazing things with veneers that are in rough shape. Good luck and I can’t wait to see what you’re able to do with the book case.
I think that would've had to come home with me. I don't have anywhere to put it either but I would've found some place because oh my God those things are beautiful but to know this is at least vintage impossibly antique just because it that much more of a draw for those of us who are into things like that 😁
I inherited one just like it, I treasure it and keep my music globe/boxes in it, love it ❤️
I love Angie!!!
Definitely reach out to Angie! She does amazing veneer work
The first thing I thought was “Talk to Angie from Transcend”, lol. Also, I’m happy that you’re so happy with your finds. Well done.
Hello, The "garlic keeper" is actually a garlic cooker. Take the top and put it in water. Take the whole bulb of garlic and cut about a quarter or a third off the top off. Put the bulb on the bottom piece, then dig the top piece out of the water and put it over the top. Stick the whole thing in the oven at around 350, for about an hour. It is delicious on a toasted baguette all on it's own or with some cheese, like Brie. I had one for years. Enjoy!!!
You should put a little olive oil and a pinch of salt on top
The wooden art box hole is SCREAMING pencil sharpener to me!
The Japanese print is an old museum poster from a museum in Switzerland :-) The previous owner must have bought it im the museum shop on a trip, how cool! Love reprints of woodblock prints too, especially by hokusai and hiroshige & eisen.
Such a great video, I love a good estate sale! The triangular little bracket looks like the base to a fountain pen stand. They often have a little cup on a swivel that screws onto a base, to hold the pen upright and prevent ink mess. Since you found pen nibs in the drawer thats what makes the most sense to me! 😅
Exactly what I thought! 👍
So smart, I was thinking a pencil sharpener 😂
@@DearGabbyme too!
I always find it so sweet to see younger people seeing the things of my childhood and appreciating them in a whole new way.
We had a kitchen witch and she did have a broom. It was a joke gift for my mom whose nickname rhymed with witch. The brown soup dishes. The barristers cabinet and artist/architect paper storage cabinet are chefs kiss! Oh my, that lantern is beautiful!!
Perfect comment! I grew up with old books jammed into barrister cabinets because my parents bought everything, books and furniture, secondhand. They weren’t viewed as antiques in our house of 4 rowdy kids. But we all loved reading so books and bookcases got a lot of use and still held up.
Same here
8:07 this unlocked a hidden childhood memory I have not thought about for decades! Pretty sure we had one of these when I was a kid.
@@ArtByDesign80 My sister gave me one of these in about 1986 and I had it hanging in our kitchen for many years.
Hahaha my nickname rhymes with “witch” too! 😂😂😂
Danie, I just want you to know how much I appreciate your openness about your own mental health struggles because I think we feel less alone when we know that there are others traveling the same path.
❤️❤️❤️ we are not alone in our mental health. Sharing is the only way we can drop the negative stigma around it xx
I knew it! Once you showed the paper cabinet, I knew you were going to end up with it! lol
Your Sun pattern bowl was made by Midwinter Potteries in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, in the 1970's - becoming more and more collectible! A great find.
Came here to find this comment because I'm from the potteries 😆 and when she said Stratfordshire I was like 🤔 I don't think that place exists haha
My parents had that pattern when they got married in the early 80s. I’m pretty sure my grandmother picked it out. My mom always hated it so when they remodeled their kitchen in the mid 90s, it was the perfect opportunity to get new stuff. And who got the sun pattern dishes? My grandmother…she happily took them. One woman’s trash is another woman’s treasure.
How wonderful that these peoples’ cherished things were given the chance to find new homes instead of being carted off to a landfill. Looking forward to seeing you restore the barrister’s cabinet and paper cabinet!
The Odd Shoppe sign in the basement would be a perfect sign for the new work shop.
The bracket on top of the box might be for mounting a small easel.
This video post is a terrific fun interlude between your DIY projects and the garage build. Thanks for sharing!
I am really looking forward to seeing you flip the cabinet! Though, I was thinking if you kept it, it would make a great display case for collectables! Action figures and such!
Something about Dannies energy in this video had me crushing! Love seeing her have so much fun!
I think that therapy is working!
Absolutely. She had me totally engaged throughout and I was sorry it had to end.
I love finding notes and random bookmarks in second hand books I buy, because they tell a bit of the book’s history and its life with its previous owner. So much so that I make a point of leaving my bookmarks in my books once I finish them (random tickets, coupons, whatever I used) so they may once tell a story to someone else about the book’s life with me. Is that weird? Well I love it.
When I saw that cabinet in the first home, I literally yelled at the tv (yes I’m old I watch CZcams on a tv) you have to get that Dani!!! I’m thrilled you did 😁 All the treasures were so fun, it’s nice to see old items finding new homes and not being tossed. Can’t wait to see that barrister cabinet refurbished! 🧡🖤🧡
I'm so glad you got the barrister's cabinet!! It's such a shame that you're not keeping this, but your mother-in-law will love it. That paper-drawer thing - PERFECT!! I'm so happy for you Danie.
The "rose bowl" with the pattern inside at the bottom of the bowl as well as covering the exterior would look wonderful (IMO) with a scattering of cut flowers. I would use about 3 small spiked metal flower holders used for holding floral arrangements in place. I would place them in the bottom of the bowl, fill them with flowers & add some clean, clear water. That would allow you to have the flowers & still feature the pattern at the bottom of the bowl.
The triangle piece on the box is for attaching to an artist easel. And as far as that floral bowl- just ship it to me! It’s gorgeous!!! I think it would make a beautiful water fountain/bird bath for the greenhouse.
I LOVE when you start talking in an English/Scottish accent. You are a very clever storyteller.
Your tshirt is a play on the tourism advertising for Virginia from the 70's...Those books are beautiful!!!
That floral, black bowl screams pet food or water bowl to me rather than a planter. Lovely finds. I love giving cherished things a new home, estate sales are pretty special 😊✨
I knew that with the glimpses of the barrister’s cabinet and the blue map cabinet-I just knew you wouldn’t be able to resist ( I wouldn’t have either) Great finds!!
Danie, that is a kitchen witch, no question. Please show the transformation of the cabinet!!! Love the Garden Magic book -- woowee! I think the triangle thing might be (once was) a pencil sharpener (maybe). Great finds, Danie!! Good eye 🧐
that was my thought as well - pencil sharpener :)
I also thought pencil sharpener! But then she opened the drawer, and there wasn't a separate space for shavings, so... idk.... with Danie, it could be anything!
I felt in love with the blue cabinet the first moment you showed it in your video and i'm so happy you adopted it!
I LOVE that you will treasure that paper cabinet as much as the woman who received it as a gift from her husband! That is the true message here in recycling and loving treasures from our and others pasts :)
Danie, the threaded hole on the box is for a travel easel. That was originally a student paint box for trips. If I remember correctly while they were used in Europe for many years they didn't gain popularity in North America till the Hudson Art revival era.
The rose/floral pattern bowl that has a little chip can hold a clear glass vase with some aquatic patho plant so you can still see those pretty flowers!
The blue cabinet is absolutely gorgeous, I hope you keep the blue, it’s just perfect.
I could not have passed up all that beautiful pottery in the 2nd sale! As a fellow stationery lover, that pencil box is amazing! I wonder...is the triangle on top of the box a pencil sharpener?
That's what I was thinking too! Looks like a pencil sharpener
it might pop out. I had a pencil box similar to it and the pencil sharpener would pop out
The “awls” actually look more like tools for carving wood or linoleum in printmaking! Awesome finds 😊
I hope Danie does another make art with me episode those are fun in between all her amazing DIY build projects!
Fill your chintz bowl with clear resin with a little fish in it.
I would use it for a fruit bowl.
18:05 yes! I like your recovery of old objects into gleaming shiny old useful things.
🥶🖤🔔👍🏻
I believe that odd "knife" you found in the basement is actually a scythe for cutting grass and weeds by hand.
I remember my dad having one on our farm many years ago. I think you could use the two little speckled bowls
for soup. Love your paper cabinet. Wish I had room for something like that as I make all my own greeting cards and have tons of paper to store. Great finds! Thanks for sharing!
Oh no She’s caught the estate sale bug watch out! Thanks for sharing your finds I love watching this kind of stuff.
Here’s a tip when cleaning older white ceramic/ porcelain items like the cherub bowl you can fill it with hot water and drop in a denture cleaning tab. let it soak overnight. Also works great for stained coffee cups.
So glad we got to go with you during these estate sales! As weird as this sounds I can imagine the old library smell of these houses with all antique wood furniture and things and its kinda bittersweet these people have to part with all of their precious things they collected throughout their lives but I’m also so glad you got some awesome pieces that your going to give new life too!! 🧚🏼♀️✨
The round bowl with the yellow circle in the bottom, that pattern was my first set of dishes in the mid 1970's. I loved them! I had a kitchen with harvest gold appliances.😅🤣😂
I can't believe you found a kitchen witch! Aww...we had one hanging in our kitchen window in the 70's (it seemed like everybody did) and she was so cute. And at 10:05 Granny was "off her rocker" hee hee. Boy what treasures you found. And as usual Danie, thank you for all the joy and humor you bring us each Saturday morning! 🧡🧡🧡
I remember getting that "Goodbye Cruel World" joke curio when I was about 6. I'm now 60. My crazy great aunt bought it for me at a shop when I laughed at it. I thought it was weird and wonderful and I loved seeing people's reactions when they opened it. And if you didn't get that paper cabinet I would have taken a plane from Australia to Canada just to bop you on the nose for being a bad girl! 😂 It was wonderful before but after seeing the special top, I'm just in love, you lucky thing.
I agree with some other friends in the comments that the hole in the art box is probably a pencil sharpener or a place to attach an ink well. I really enjoyed this treasure hunt of Estate Sales!! I eyed a few treasures as well!!❤. My Uncle had many Barrister Bookcases. He not only had books , but chemistry items too! What great finds and an interesting journey! Thanks for bringing us along!!!
Oh that second house was like my dream house. All the kitchen stuff, the art studio and the workshop for my husband 😉...
The fact that the husband made the paper cabinet for his wife showed how much each other care and enjoyed their hobbies.
But it's also kinda sad seeing how the life possessions of a person/couple just are sold in pieces. At least a keen soul like you Danie had the chance to visit and keep some pieces and its good juju for your home.
I was thinking a water fountain type thingie. Then you could still see some of the bottom. I know that lovely creative brain of yours make something insanely gorgeous.❤❤
Danie, you are a rockstar! You hair is looking so good.
kitchen witches were in every gift shop in the 70s. there was also a questionable girl scout craft where you made a witch head from an apple left to shrivel
"Questionable girl scout craft"😂🤣 I totally remember that trend. Okay girls...today we are making shrunken heads....do not have nightmares tonight.
Off the topic, but can I just tell you how much I love your hairstyle these days! It really suits you! Love it no matter what color. Sorry, meant to tell you back when you got it cut. You might just be inspiring me for a new do!!
That paper storage cabinet is AMAZING!! By far an awesome find! I also love the ceramic egg bowl and the lantern. I'm a total lantern girlie. Lol. Thanks for taking us along!
I have a barristers cabinet that is 4 tiers and the bottom has a drawer but it looks just like the one you got!! The top of mine is in excellent condition though. It was made in Cincinnati by...The Globe-Wernicke Co.!
Great finds! That last house was amazing I love that their items will live on in your house. That paper cabinet though ... chef kiss
The only thing better than your absolute joy about your treasures would be to know how much the items were. It's fun to see the great deals from different times and places. Love it.
Yes, and putting it into place. Sliding the witchy garden book into her cabinet would be so satisfying 😍
My favorite estate find is this painting of a white egret in a swamp with a willow tree in the background. It's a lot of reflection a hazy color and sort of trippy and Dove it so much. I named him Freddy 🥰
I’d say make a small power tool for the kitchen Witch instead of the broom.
It would be really easy to make a broom for your kitchen witch from sticks and twigs. And she should always be hanging somewhere in the kitchen so she can chase away evil spirits in flight. 🧙
Best part was watching you displaying all the items. You are so much fun!
One thing about the first pair of scissors is the FLAT BOTTOM, so they would rest against the table as they cut. Very helpful with material !
For the floral bowl I would make it a lamp base and pour transparent resin to hold the stick of the table lamp. 🕯️
The garlic keeper is a garlic roaster. You cut off the top, of a whole garliic set, leave the skins paper on, set garlic in the tray and put butter olive oil on it. Put on cover. Bake till the garlic starts to poke out. Squeeze the cloves and it comes out. Spread on beard etc. Roasted garlic is so good.
THAT PAPER CABINET IS EVERYTHING
You found a kitchen witch! My grandma had one, and now I have it.
The paper cabinet!!! $200????!! What a great find!! 😍
The pencil box with its treasures was my fav.
Oh please do more estate sales!! This was amazing! DIY and estate sales! Omg!
That blue cabinet!!! What an awesome find!
Pencil sharperner?
For the floral and black bowl: 3 legged black riser, place bowl on it and place fruit in it. Then you see the outside and inside of it!
Omg Danie! You with that lamp! 😂. The way you just go into stories....I just love it so much!
That magazine rack is INCREDIBLE!!!🎉
That is exactly what I suggested to put under the stairs for plans &/or blueprints at the end of a wall of under cabinets with garage type storage for your bandsaw or drill press & other less often used equipment, out of sight equals less clutter! So in short, wall to wall cabinets in an L shape ending under the stairs with the blueprint cabinet!🎉TaDa!!!😊
Maybe the triangle on the box used to hold a pencil sharpener?
Was just about to say this- glad I checked first 😅
String of Hearts would look great in that planter supported by 3 angels 🥰
That barrister cabinet would be awesome for my Superman statues!❤
I know I’m not the only one that audibly gasped at the kitchen in house #2 . It was so pretty I could cry. THE WINDOWS 😭💖
Your T-shirt is a play on the Virginia State tourism bureau logo and motto, "Virginia is for Lovers"! ❤❤❤
Beautiful finds! If you want to put plants in the bird of paradise bowl and still see the inside, how about putting several small glass containers in it and grow plants in water. I do that with a similar size crystal bowl I thrifted and I love the look.
Lucky bamboo in glass cylinders would work beautifully for this!
The inside of the floral bowl is so gorgeous! Maybe get some floating candles and use it for a centerpiece.
The flowered British bowl can be used as a planter pot. You can use a masonry bit to drill into the bottom--or you can plant an aloe plant in it and keep it in your kitchen window. If you use succulent or cactus soil they very rarely need watering. Every kitchen needs an aloe plant for burns! I think the triangle on the pencil box is a pencil sharpener....maybe?
Danie, I hope you try a wood block carving session for a “do art with me” episode! I enjoyed your paint with me episode awhile back where you did a Q&A at the same time ❤
I agree with Samantha who left a comment earlier about the wood box with a drawer. The box is indeed part of an antique jeweler's or apothecary traveling balance scale. The scale's beam would have been screwed into the triangular metal plate. Once dismantled, the small scale parts (beam, lever, arms, weighing pans and weights) would have been stored in the drawer. I was so CHUFFED when I found out about it after a bit of online detective work! I would have never guessed otherwise. Love from Montréal.
I appreciate the respect and joy that you show for the belongings of another person. Having recently had to have a similar sale of my mom's things, it was very, very sad and hard to see all her lifelong possessions and treasures go. To think that someone might love her items and treasure them the way you have, is a comfort :)
Could the hole in the top of the artist's box possibly be a pencil sharpener?
I'd love to see the floral flowerpot with saucer in your office.
The candle wick trimmer is not actually meant to snuff the flame. A snuffer is a bell shaped instrument, hinged at the end of a handle. The bell is lowered over the candle to smother the flame. They would also likely be brass, and sometimes beautifully ornamented. I think if you try to cut your wick each time you snuff, you'll run out of usable wick too soon.
Rolling your pizza crust with pin (versus hand stretching) results in a thinner, denser crust, because it will press the gas pockets (created during rising) out of the dough. It just depends on your preference.
I am happy for you having found your beautiful paper dresser!
Now you'll have to try an auction sale...
25:35 so happy to see that you bought AWL of them!! 😂❤😂❤
That paper workspace unit is a great find!! Can’t wait to see it in the finished space! 🎉
I have a beautiful four sectional barrister book case with the beveled glass and brass detailing. It's my favourite furniture piece. I just love it. I use it as a curious cabinet. It keeps all of my fossils, vintage camera collection and other treasures dust free and beautifully presented.
😊
That pretty floral bowl with black and roses can become a clock!
She's a kitchen witchen!!! I haven't seen one in decades. They are good luck.🍀❤🍀
That paper storage/work station is amazing.
I am so jealous of your blue paper drawer cabinet. I've wanted one like that for 40 years. I built myself a cabinet thing from plywood with no drawers except sheets of plywood resting on sliders of 2x2s, and everything on them gets dusty, but shallow map drawers are rare and expensive. So I'm REALLY jealous!!! When I worked in the reference dept of our downtown library I coveted the map drawers for my art supplies. They cost the earth though. You are so lucky, girl! Colour me green. 😱😭👍😍 Great stuff you found, well done!😊
The garlic cover is actually a garlic roaster. It is oven safe. Cut the top off the bulb and roast in the oven. Not sure what temp. or how long. The roasted garlic becomes soft and spreadable and quite delicious. You can add it to softened butter to spread on a nice crusty bread 🥖. DANG, now I’m hungry!
such cool finds!! that clay garlic pot is actually used to roast whole garlic! a little olive oil, salt, pepper on a whole head of garlic into the oven at 350 for an hour and half or so.... its the best. I had one growing up. ah, memories.
Not me screaming when I saw you bought the barrister cabinet!!!! It is stunning ❤❤❤❤
Yes please let's see the transformation of the Barristers cabinet 😊
I want that map cabinet, and that hand held ‘calculator’/abacus is the bees knees!!!
Your thrift videos are the BEST because we have such similar taste!
The way I audibly gasped when granny fell out of her chair.
Danie, for that floral bowl, you can turn it into a pendant lamp/light fixture instead of a planter (which would be great too)! 😊
Great finds! The floral bowl filled with soaps, lotion, a hand towel on a bath vanity. Oh yeah.
The floral bowl (swoon) would be beautiful with a 12" by 3" wide candle with a hurricane globe.
Also wanted to mention, I’ve had a garlic bell for thirty years or more - works wonderfully for keeping garlic fresh. If viewers want one and can’t find one, they might be able to do a hack with a small terra cotta plant pot and saucer (available from Canadian Tire, Home Hardware, Walmart, garden centres, etc.) - I think it’s the terra cotta that’s the key.
My grandmother had one of them different items in it like an tea cups. Brings back such good memories.
My grandpa was a cobbler up until he passed at 89. Those leather tools he would have had a fit over. I wish he could see them!
Thinking that artists box may have had either an inkwell or pen holder screwed on top in that triangle. Also, it's giving me strong Deathly Hallows vibes lol!
The Barrister book case was designed also so lawyers and barristers could add more Modular’s as their practise grew. I have seen them floor to ceiling and wall to wall in the UK at my parents lawyer back in the 70’s have not seen them here in Australia but I have only been two 3 lawyers office and one barristers off in the past 40 years and my mind was not on what was in the room like it had been when I was 7 years old😹😹😹
Love the second large item I would love something like that just so I had some place to put all my patter pieces from dread making into 😹😹, I think leaving it as it is for now and re-visit it 12 months after you have been in your new work shop/office for that time as it takes that long to really get your rhythm for the areas.
I love resorting older items like the barristers book case rather than changing it mostly due to the age of it. I have restored a few items for friends over the years back to their original glory I have a 1860 side table that I have to finish resorting for a friend one of the legs split along the grain, one thing about old furniture is the grain is tighter and straighter than it is on modern equivalent items so it’s an easy fix, but it’s the stripping away all the blasted modern lead paint that some bright spark thought would make it look better😖🤬🤦🏽♀️
Hi Danie! I believe the triangle opening on the top of the artist’s box may be a pencil sharpener. Sometimes the boxes have them built in. LOVE your channel! Thank you for the inspiration!
The garlic container is for roasting garlic. I use mine frequently. It is perfect for roasting garlic and cleans easily.
Garlic needs air flow for long term storage.
