I recently played Prototype and I gotta say it's one of the most fun games I've ever played. It's so over the top and bonkers with your powers. It's legit power fantasy at it's peak and that's hella refreshing. Games these days try to be more like movies that are grounded in reality with drama etc. I mean that's fine and all but sometimes I just wanna be an overpowered God who pretty much wrecks everything in my path. Prototype is exactly that.

Years ago when I was a teenager I played Prototype and I remember enjoying it but hitting a roadblock fighting Elizabeth Greene in Times Square and I gave up. Now I'm 21 and I got Prototype again and just blew through it and finally beat Greene and it felt liberating. Elbow dropped that bitch so much I thought I was in the WWE but I feel like from Greene's death onwards the game just gets frustrating difficulty-wise. I thought Greene's battle was the peak of frustration but I was wrong, the tank escort mission was tedious and the chopper and tendril mission was ball-bustlingly annoying. Fun game though until the military completely jumped on my ass like I was the second coming of Osama.

My usual elevator pitch when telling people about Prototype is "It's as much fun as receiving a beej from an angel of the Lord."
The stealth, though... Despite how rudimentary it is, it's powerful enough to basically snap the enemy AI over your knee whenever you like. Listen for the sound cue to let you know when to disguise yourself, and it's possible to blend between stealth and open combat with ease. Except the super-soldiers; breaking line-of-sight with them is a bitch.
Thermal vision is genuinely useful when undercover and trying to pick out soldiers from a crowd of regular civilians; the shooty bois will glow more brightly. It also completely removes smoke effects, which really helps during one particular later lategame helo-piloting mission.
Against bosses, Critical Pain is generally the ideal Devastator attack. Yes, I know that particular button press is weird.
It bothered me that the only visually interesting thing in the game was Alex himself.
I always try to get the Speed Bumps achievement while I have a passenger in the tank.
Side note: Dunno if you'd count it as "Superhero Genre," given that it goes by linear levels instead of an open world, but I think you'd enjoy the Otogi games on the OG Xbox. It's very different from Prototype, but they have in common a similar sense of the player being unnaturally, terrifyingly powerful and selling that sensation through the animation and sound design.
Edit: Wait, what about that Insomniac-developed Spider-Man game?

I liked the boss fights more than you did (might be tinted glasses, I need to replay the game again) but I think your criticisms of them are reasonable--especially the note on how on especially Hard they start requiring a lot of specificity in approach because of their outrageous damage and small windows of opportunity (heck, the first big fight against multiple Hunters in an enclosed space on Hard, when you have very few powers that work well against them, can instantly go frustratingly south if multiple of them go into their unstoppable berserk state attack at the same time). And it's a good point that the side-missions are really nice by essentially just giving you some structure around one of the most satisfying gameplay experiences out there.
I also recall enjoying missions like Behind the Glass, The Stolen Body, and A Thousand Suns, if I am remembering the names correctly, for their sheer challenge, but I don't think I can make any claim to objectivity there.
Ultimately, I remember the sheer joy in motion I felt the first time I played Prototype, back in 2009, was beyond anything I'd had in a video game before, and it's hard to think of games that have come out in the decade since to even approach it in the joy of the moment-to-moment getting around the world. (Journey is one, and I am curious when I get to them if the recent Insomniac Spiderman games are as well.) The wall-running/gliding/etc just by itself could be a game--akin to how some people talk about the old Spiderman 2 game, I think. It is not the absolute best for precision platforming, which can get exposed in some of the traversal missions (perhaps I am worse at those than you, anyway), but the power behind it is, dare I say, intoxicating.
So, gameplay-wise, it's still one of the absolute best I have ever played--there are quibbles I can have with this or that, and a couple of them even got fixed in Prototype 2 (e.g. a put-someone-down button)--although some of it made the game too simple/less entertaining/too easy (e.g. dedicated dodge and parry buttons with generous windows and prompts). In terms of graphics, this was and is an absolute achievement just in how much is going on at one time--so many NPCs hostile or hapless on the streets, even if as a result their AI is hilariously unobservant. Then the soundtrack is an all-timer.
And the story, I will argue, is underrated--in some ways better than Arkham or Infamous, contemporaries which are brought up much more often as having good stories. Yes, the cutscenes are janky and have some weird framing and abrupt endings--ultimately the story feels unfinished, e.g. no conclusion w/Ragland and Dana. But Alex Mercer/Blacklight/ZEUS is *the* most interesting protagonist of a video game I can recall. I mean, "virus gains sentience, and then ultimately gains a conscience via having the memories of thousands of people in its thoughts"??? That's *so* compelling, and I very much would like other stories to turn up with something similar to explore it further. Unfortunately the aforementioned jank in the presentation and writing meant this potential went somewhat unfullfilled, I will admit, and then Prototype 2 slam-dunked the whole thing into a bin, and the series with it. I think in retrospect the writers did not even fully realize what a character concept they had crafted, which is a genuine shame but still leaves what we have in Prototype one of the best twists/reveals/etc in gaming IMO (up there w/the original God of War and Horizon: Zero Dawn, to name two other greats). And I unironically liked the Web of Intrigue, as well.
All of this adds up to what I see as a top-ten game of all-time-- a bit like Fallout New Vegas (and otherwise almost entirely unlike Fallout New Vegas), the incredible things about it are so incredible it rises above the jankier elements. Glad I stumbled across this video, liked seeing another perspective on it positive and negative. I need to bring out the PS3 and replay this.

  • @biofriik
    @biofriik Před 2 lety +2

Prototype is my all-time favourite game so expect an extremely fanboyish rant.
The story is better than you give it credit for. It isn't just "guy wakes up with amnesia and superpowers".
You aren't Mercer. Mercer is dead. You are the virus. You simply think you're Mercer because his corpse was the first thing the virus came into contact with as it was unleashed. The only thing in "Mercer's" head as he wakes up is revenge, the last thought the original Mercer had when he died.
But as the story goes on, that motive start to change. It reaches the point where he takes an active nuclear warhead away from the city to save it, despite knowing that he could survive the blast no matter what.
This sentient virus designed to kill people in gruesome ways eventually develops a conscience and here's the kicker, actually becomes a better person than the original Alex Mercer. The original Mercer was described as a sociopath who made the virus deadlier than it ever had been for nothing other than money. He only cared about his sister when he could use her to dig up as much dirt as possible on Gentek as Dana states that she hadn't even spoken to Alex for ten years before the events of the game.
Mercer released the Blacklight virus to take down as many people as he could and doomed the people of New York. The virus that was initially in that vial ended up saving the city three weeks later.
Maybe I'm just looking into it too much but it was disheartening to see all of that thrown away in Prototype 2 when they made Mercer into the main villain and didn't even explain why he had such a change of heart and personality. I genuinely think that the people who wrote P2 never even played the first game or they played it and just skipped the cutscenes.
Cross isn't Greene's son. That's Pariah who doesn't directly appear in the story at all. The Cross you fight in the beginning is simply a highly skilled soldier who is trained specifically to down people like Mercer. The Supreme Hunter you fight in the middle and in the end starts out as the Parasite that Cross injects into Mercer. After Mercer gets cured, he injects it into Greene who rejects it and it morphs into the Supreme Hunter. That Supreme Hunter consumes Cross at some point and assumes his identity as he works with Mercer.
I disagree with you on the Web of Intrigue. It's a brilliant way to tell the backstory without getting in the way of the main story. If you're interested in it, then you have to hunt down the truth yourself, if not, leave it be. A lot of games make the mistake of cramming too much exposition and backstory into the main storylines (Assassin's Creed 3 being the first thing that comes to mind), but the WoI system manages to avoid that.
I also like it because filling out WoI the early on will foreshadow events in the main story before they happen (Bloodtox, the Parasite, etc...). Even if you don't care about the story, hunting down the individual memories is still a great way to earn EP.
I also disagree on the mission design. They are simplistic, but they allow A LOT of options in how you can approach them. The mission with the Bloodtox Pump can be completed without a tank or the helicopter. You don't even need to stay hidden from the military, they can be fully aware of you.
Or take the mission where you have to pick up and deploy Blackwatch troops with the transport helicopter. As long as you land it somewhere safe, you can actually leave the helicopter for the parts where you need to destroy the Hive or kill the Hydras. I just hijacked a tank for the Hydra part and killed them with that. So long as the helicopter stays intact, you won't fail the mission.

The Supreme Hunter isn’t “Pariah” aka Elizabeth Greene’s son. It’s simply a monster that Greene spits out after Alex stabs her with a syringe containing the parasite (the one that takes away your powers for a few missions). We only really get to see Greene’s son in flashbacks, but the story never really follows up on that point.
