This was actually the title song from a 1965 screwball-comedy film. Tom originally wasn't crazy about it because he didn't get it ("pussycat" was a common hipster term for women in the late '50s and early '60s), but he eventually did record it after being convinced by the song's writing team (the great Burt Bacharach/Hal David) ... and it ended up earning an "Original Song" Oscar nomination and became a hit single (#3 in the USA). It's a playful song very much of its time.
The movie has a couple 'surreal' scenes which is typical of the time. I was old enough when I saw it that it didn't feel like watching your parents. :)
@@terrylandess6072 This album was my first album. My brother gave it to me for Christmas. I was just a young kid and had no idea how really silly the lyrics were. I liked the upbeat melody.
It’s from the Woody Allen film of the same name. Back in the day calling a woman pussycat was like today’s babygirl - a bit demeaning but meant fondly ❤
Technically not a 'Woody Allen Film', it was merely his first screenplay that got produced (Charles K. Feldman), directed by Clive Donner. Woody got his acting debut in it as a minor character. It starred Peter O'Toole, Peter Sellers, Capucine, Romy Schneider, Paula Prentiss, Ursula Andress, etc. 'Pussycat' was a beatnik term for one's female LOVER, or Sex Interest - hardly same as 'baby-girl', except for the pedophiles.
Love your yankee shirt amber, though I was the only Yankees fan that once lived in Oklahoma. Song was written as theme song for movie.they chose tom.honerun.😂
Tom Jones is a certified legend and his effect on the ladies is undeniable. What’s strange is that you guys haven’t reacted to his biggest hit and the absolute essence of Tom Jones, It’s Not Unusual. ✌️
They're a little hesitant in doing that. They both know It's Not Unusual is the song Carlton on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air would sing on the show. They mentioned it when they did a reaction to a Tom Jones interview from CBS.
My mom and her identical twin got front row tickets to see him in concert. They both wore the same outfit and when he saw them he called them double trouble! They brought a handkerchief and he used it to wipe the sweat off his face. He handed it back to my mom. When they got home they were still swooning and then cut the cloth in half. Mom still had hers decades later!!! ❤️❤️
I got to see Tom Jones live in person last Sunday at The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. He's still going strong and sounded as good ever. He is the MAN!
Seeing him in person was so exciting. He gave off this electric vibe that drove all the ladies wild (including me). But most of us kept our underwear on 😂

Okay between Tom Jones and Barry Gibb. They were two different generations (or rather appealed to 2 different generations at the time) Tom appealed to my mom and aunties and Barry was my besties and me.
This song was nominated for an Oscar for best original song and was featured in the 1965 comedy of the same name, "What"s New, Pussycat?," starring Peter Sellers of "Pink Panther" and Inspector Clouseau fame. "Pussycat" was more a term of endearment back in the groovy 1960s, like "teddy bear" or "sweetie pie."
This was the song that made him a star in America. Tom Jones was the bigger sex symbol in the day. He was all about his sexual charisma. Barry Gibb was part of a trio and did not stand out quite as much as hip-shaking and heart-breaking Tom Jones. Tom Jones had TV specials and even a variety series for a while.
This is one of my daughter's favorite songs. It was always amusing when I would play it in the car. The whole car would be belting out Whoa-oh-oh-oh! when it came around.

For years after this I used to do a Tom Jones impersonation, and this was how I did it I'd sing "It's Not Unusual" and start taking of my jacket etc. It was always good for a laugh and my wife always enjoyed it.

I first heard Tom Jones in 1965 when his song 'It's not unusual' went straight to number 1 in the UK. This is another favourite from the 60's which was from a film.Tom was a bit of a sex symbol in those days! Girls would throw garments at him at live performances. The Green ,green grass of home and Delilah were popular ballads. As you say Sex bomb and Kiss were much later hits and Baby its cold outside with Cerys Matthews.

Growing up I remember my mother playing Tom Jones & Englebert Humperdinck records all the time and yes, she would swoon! lol. Tom Jones was very versatile in other genres. Check out "Say You'll stay until tomorrow" (country sound) & cover of Prince's "Kiss" with The Art Of Noise. (80's vibe).
My Great Grandmother loved Tom Jones, every Sunday night if we were there visiting, you had to be quiet when Tom Jones show came on. "She's a Lady" is my favorite but I love "It's Not Unusual" also.
Tom Jones had a TV show in the 60s and that's what this set is! So hilarious to watch the women of the 60s, who are now grandmas and great grandmas, completely act the fool over him LOL!
Yay! Tom Jones! He's so good and has great emotional energy. I like his voice. Good movie too. from what I've heard. Tom Jones has my vote. This was fun.
That was the title song of a Woody Allen scripted comedy movie starring Peter O Toole, Peter Sellers, and Ursula Andress amongst others. As far as I remember it is about a guy who has a lot of women but mixes up or forgets their names, so he calls everyone Pussicat :D
So glad you did a reaction to this song. My wife of 55 years and her girlfriend, God bless her soul, loved Tom Jones! In 1971 we went to the Latin casino in New Jersey to watch him live. What a show!!! You both are my favorite reactors by far. Tom Jones is definitely my most favorite male singer, with Elvis a very very close second. I also agree with your husband, for my favorite female singer is Shania Twain! I agree with you Rob she sure is something to look at, besides, being a great singer, so I do believe you need to put her up there right beside Tom! God bless both of you and keep up the good work.
This performance is from Tom Jones very popular variety TV show "This Is Tom Jones" which was on TV between 1969 and 1971 on Sunday nights. Wonderful memories from my childhood. Great reaction guys.
Tom Jones was a true original. He had total command of the stage so he could do anything he wanted, no matter how intentionally ridiculous, and the entire crowd would swoon.
Legend has it that the phrase, "What's New Pussycat", was what Warren Beatty, the 60's movie star of such films as Bonnie and Clyde, used to greet his many many girlfriends. In fact Woody Allen, who was in the movie that this song came from once joked that if there was such a thing as reincarnation, he wanted to come back as Warren Beatty's fingertips. Tom of course was ladies man and apparently he dated the lovely Mary Wilson of the Supremes for a while in the 60's
You recently reacted to "Raindrops Keep Fallin on My Head" and now this one-- both songs written by the great Burt Bacharach, who recently died. Check out his many songs done by Dionne Warwick (the aunt of Whitney Houston). "Alfie." "I say A Little Prayer, " "A House Is Not A Home, " many others all great. Perfect for Female Friday.
There are two things you need to see Tom Jones video “Kiss”. He won so many awards for. This video and this song brought him back to the top, after he was having a slight slump. The other son is one he did with Tina Turner, on his tv show… “Hot Legs”. This shows both stars dancing and singing a duet. I believe you both will enjoy it. Thanks for all you do to respect all genre of music and of different ages.
I remember being 5 yrs old and loving this song. My mom bought the 45 rpm vinyl record that started my obsession with vinyl records. 45s and 33s singles and albums.
This is the only rock and roll song to end in the word, ‘nose’. Just a bit of trivia. And yes, Jay, we would call our best girl “pussycat”. And now they are cougars. 😂
One thing I think is the most special about Tom Jones is that he was married to the same woman from the day of their wedding to her death from cancer in 2016 . In show business, there seem to be so few that can say that.
Boy, he is an absolute icon, and around the same age as my 88 year old mother. Ha! I don’t remember any guys calling their sweethearts "pussycat". Maybe it was a Welsh thing, as that's where he's from. It was a huge hit, though. I may have been in kindergarten when it was released. Yow! Tom Jones released a couple of songs that were played on MTV way back when. One is You Can Keep Your Hat On (ooh la la! A sexy number that he just kills). But the other one was Prince's "Kiss". Jones teamed with the band, The Art of Noise and released his music video cover about 2 years after Prince released his original in '86. It's flippin' amazing! That man is timeless. Thanks for the fun. Be blessed❤
He had another hit around the time of this "It's Not unusual". You also might enjoy Wilson Pickett "in the Midnight Hour". Tom wanted to be the next Wilson Pickett. Wilson came on Tom's show and they sang together.
What ya'll aren't seeing is that when he mentions the nose, the eyes, the lips, he is slowly gyrating his hips which is why the ladies are screaming. In this song the cameras zoomed in to his face each time he started moving his hips around.
Barry and Tom were catering to two different generations. Teens to younger adults for Barry and 40s and up for Tom. I could appreciate some of his songs though at the time. The Bee Gees were in a different hemisphere and much more popular for people of my age. Look at Toms audience and you will see more middle aged adults. My Moms friend really liked TJ.
I was 13 when this song came out and I got a small reel to reel tape recorder for my birthday. My first recording was of me trying to sing along with Tom on this song. I couldn't believe how goofy I sounded. Anyway, a great song by a great singer!
My Father's favorite TJ song was " Delilah". He couldn't sing at all but when that song came on he would sing it at the top of his lungs. It embarrassed me as a child, what I wouldn't give just to hear him sing it again.😢❤
Tom Jones had his TV show "This Is Tom Jones" on every Thursday night in the late 60's and early 70's. "It's Not Unusual" was the theme song and biggest hit and he sang it every show.....and it has horns.
Another British singer worth checking out is a gentleman called Cliff Richard who between 1958 and 2009 had 124 top 40 hit singles 68 of which reached the top 10 including 14 number ones he also appeared in a series of popular 60's movies including Summer holiday and The Young ones.
Tom Jones followed by Barry Gibb. I saw Tom in concert in Memphis TN in 1978. My mom carried me with her because we had been watching his TV special and she wanted me to see him in person. Well, I was already a tiny fan, but then I became a huge fan. LOL! To this day, I find him to be a very sexy man that can make any song he sings make your heart flutter. I of course love the Bee Gees, but I have to put Tom first.
This song was the theme song to a film of the same name. When I first heard his voice I knew he was going to be Gigantic. I saw him perform in Vegas 5 straight years. His show were always amazing. BTW, the film is hilarious, written by Woody Allen starring Peter Sellers, Peter O'Toole, Ursula Andress and, of course, Woody Allen.
This is a Burt Bacharach (RIP) Hal David composition. You’ve played a bunch and probably didn’t even know it. Supposedly, What’s New Pussycat? is how notorious ladies man Warren Beatty used to answer the phone back in the ‘60s. So it’s kind of a poke in the ribs at Warren.
The reason it's the same set up is that he had a weekly show at night. Its was not only adults that had a crush on him. When I'd hear him singing I'd creep down the stairs and watch the show, I was 4 or 5. My mom never knew.😍
Amber, along with millions of other pussycats, fell in love with that dashing Irish rogue. The voice, the moves, and that mischievous glint in his eye...
This song brings back so many memories! My dad was a professional musician with 3 daughters. He had a song for each of us. The oldest's song was "Daddy's Little Girl" , the middle was "Tiger Rag" also known as "Hold That Tiger", and mine was "What's New Pussycat". He picked that one for me because I would come sit on his recliner with him and he would ask me "What's new, pussycat?" and also it was a song that I really loved. Even though I was only 4 years old, I loved me some Tom Jones!🥰
Tom Jones is the man! This is one of his most well known songs. So in his early days women had been known to throw their panties on stage. Yes. That’s right. Over the years it totally became a thing at his concerts. In the early 2000’s in Phoenix. He came in concert and I took my mom. At the show women were throwing panties but when Tom busted out the song What’s New Pussycat, panties galore were flying to the stage from all directions!! It was hilarious. And no, women weren’t taking off their panties. People buy new pairs to bring and throw at the show. Some people even do funny ones. One lady came running down the isle holding with both hands this huge and I’m talking HUGE pair of panties and Tom saw her and his mouth was hanging open in shock and awe and when they hit the stage he was staring at them and laughin. The lady who threw them was slender and pretty. It was so fun!
I always thought this was a silly song but it was one of his most iconic famous songs of his career and what people tended to connect with him more than most others. It was a big hit back then and they always wanted him to perform it at his shows. "What's New Pussycat?" is the theme song for the movie, written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Jones was skeptical about the song when first approached about it. Jones said it took convincing from Bacharach to perform it: "When I first heard it I thought, 'Christ! What the bloody hell do they want me to sing this for?' But Burt Bacharach explained, 'I want the big voice to sing this bloody crazy song.' And you put it on, it’s a classic." And sure enough Burt was right because it became a huge hit for him.
GUYS , THIS IS FROM THE TOM JONES SHOW. HE HAD A WEEKLY SHOW IN THE 1960S A EARLY SEVENTIES IN ENGLAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MY LATE MOTHER AND AUNTS WERE ALL IN LOVE WITH HIM.
You guys may like this. I wasn't a big Tom Jones fan however a friend of mine dragged me(1980's)to a Tom Jones concert and before the music started i couldn't see the stage because of the cloud of womans panties over the stage. Ended up being a good concert and the woman concert goers were in a good mood.
I saw Tom Jones last year singing live. Still has a strong voice despite being in his 80s. This was great to hear live. My favourite is Delilah, although some do not think it is appropriate now. Love Tom Jones. He has worked with so many great artists from the early 60s onwards. The stories he can tell is amazing!
"What's New Pussycat?" title song from the 1965 screwball comedy movie starring Peter Sellers & Peter O'Toole & introducing Woody Allen, who also wrote the script. "WNP" was the 3rd U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charting single from Tom Jones, peaking @#3 (2 weeks) in 1965. Composed by Burt Bacharach & Hal David and nominated for the 1965 Best Song Oscar but lost to "The Shadow of Your Smile."
My daughters (that are now 24 and 22) loved a movie called "Cats & Dogs" in the early 2000's. I had already known this song. But when this movie came out, and it was the theme song, it blew up. I heard it every day from my 3 year old and 2 year old, since i bought them the soundtrack on a cd. If you ever do a family movie reaction, that would be a great one.
This song always reminded me of my Momma who back in the 60s wore her eye liner like a cat. She was beautiful all her life. She died last month at 86. She was a strong, beautiful, loving Lady and she was mine. I love you Momma.
This looks like this was from his Tom Jones' TV show 1969-1971. I remember as a kid that we had a babysitter that would always make us change the channel to his show because she was so in love with Tom Jones. I don't recall Barry Gibb being as well-known as Tom Jones in the States back in those early days.
You guys are great. Tom was on the Mark and Brian show, in the morning out of LA. He did a song, (It's not unusual !). It was hilarious, When He was singing, Brian came in with a horrible trumpet, as a joke. He was laughing so hard he had a hard time completing the song. Great radio, Mark and Brian show, klos 95.5 Los Angeles

The song is by far the best thing about the film; rather like the wonderful score Burt Bacharach wrote for the 1967 production of 'Casino Royale'.

Did your mom's 45 have the little snippet at the very beginning where it sounded like something crashed? After that the song actually began.
Green Green Grass of Home next Tom Jones Reaction? . . . please!
In 1980 I was 10 years old and asked my mum for Tom Jones greatest hits. She said ‘firstly, where did you learn about Tom Jones and secondly, 😳
My first concert at the age of 5. LoL
I went with my mom, grandma, & 2 aunts.
My grandmother was a huge Tom Jones fan.😂
Never heard this excellent live version of my favourite Tom Jones song before. Thanks guys
Be blessed❤
Tom Jones. So many newbies became familiar with him thanks to Carlton from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air would dance to his music.
“Help yourself “ is a great song that is very suggestive and it’s a great song too for Sir John’s vocal. You will love it.😊
Barry and Tom were catering to two different generations.
Tom Jones had a show back in the 60's ,70's I was in love with h8m and never missed his show lol
First movie I saw as a child, What's New Pussycat. Starred Peter Sellers, it was a hoot, slapstick humor.
The heartthrobs at that time were Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdinck. I loved Tom Jones. Love the song “She’s a Lady.
The reason it's the same set up is that he had a weekly show at night. Its was not only adults that had a crush on him. When I'd hear him singing I'd creep down the stairs and watch the show, I was 4 or 5. My mom never knew.😍
“Pussycat” is a term of endearment. This song was from a 1960s movie of the same name. It was a huge hit.
One of the greatest Tom Jones songs that flies under radar a bit is Burt Bacharach's Promise Her Anything: it's total FIRE!
"It's Not Unusual" is Tom's signature tune. Worth checking out.
You guys REALLY need to see his cover of Prince's "Kiss" it's 🔥
"... I think I'm gonna dance now" 🤘
Omg yes. The “think I better dance now” is hot!
Pussycat was a Dutch country and pop group led by the three Veldpaus-sisters: Toni, Betty, and Marianne. 1973-1985, 2004-2005.
Jones said it took convincing from Bacharach to perform it:
"When I first heard it I thought, 'Christ! What the bloody hell do they want me to sing this for?' But Burt Bacharach explained, 'I want the big voice to sing this bloody crazy song.' And you put it on, it’s a classic." And sure enough Burt was right because it became a huge hit for him.
Saw him last year in concert with my mum. He's 82 years old now and still singing his heart out
My wife and I caught his concert last year in Windsor, Ontario. Voice is absolutely wonderful! Fantastic concert!
This is the first song I ever remember hearing on the radio as a child. And I loved it
"Emperor's New Groove" to see Tom Jones in the beginning and ending animated singing the theme song--BOOM BABY!
GUYS , THIS IS FROM THE TOM JONES SHOW. HE HAD A WEEKLY SHOW IN THE 1960S A EARLY SEVENTIES IN ENGLAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MY LATE MOTHER AND AUNTS WERE ALL IN LOVE WITH HIM.
That set is from his TV show , he’d do a song there every time!!
You should listen to The Green Green Grass Of Home and The Boy From Nowhere (live at Cardiff castle)
This is from Tom's own weekly TV show. My Mom used to watch every week, he had a wide variety of guests, Janis Joplin, Cher, Joe Cocker among some.
He is finally touring America again. He sounds even better in person, if that's possible.
A couple fun duets with Tom Jones are with Sly and the Family Stone singing "EveryDay People", and with Joe Cocker singing "“Delta Lady"
On duets, whenever some famous singer dies, you'll find a video on CZcams of a duet with Tom as all the stars wanted to be on his TV show.
Oh! I almost forgot the one guy that would have my mother dancing 💃 around the kitchen 🤭 I definitely can’t leave him out!! She absolutely loved to hear Lou Rawls sing 🎤 She would have me holler at her whenever he appeared on television 📺 along with all the others I mentioned previously but she “emphasized” Lou Rawls in particular! She said there’s just something about his voice 😌☺️🤭😆💖
