She was always aware.. She just went about it the wrong way because her perspective was skewed from her upbringing.

What makes it even truer is that she wasn't the one who told Carina. If Maya had been the one to tell Carina she turned down consideration for captain, it would've come across as a gesture. This shows she did it not for her marriage but for her own mental well being. That I'm sure means the most to Carina
I missed their friendship!
In genral, I missed the friendships in the show! For a long time it's been all about drama and romatic duos, but the heart of the show is friendship, so I'm glad it's going back to the basics.
They should keep this friendship alive! And all the other ones too. It's what the show needs.

I am so happy for Maya but I know that she deep down really wanted this. I hope she gets to become captain in the future, she's the only one who fits the job.
i'm hoping that at the end of the series, she's battalion chief. i doubt it - i have a feeling she'll leave 19 to become captain at another station, and carina will leave grey-sloan officially to open her own practice (as she's said in the show this was a goal of hers eventually)
I was annoyed with Maya at the start of season 6, cause she kept making wrong decisions and dumb things. But I can't get mad at her cause I know she went through a lot as a child and she's going through a lot as an adult. BUT when she got the help she needed, my heart swelled of happiness for her. She was becoming happier and I love that so much. I look forward to a healed Maya in the 7th Season of Station 19

To think jack was up for captain season 1… and sacrificed himself at the end of it… got ptsd… but after that, they’ve done a number on his character, he feels kinda forgotten to me.

Why are people making this about Carina? Maya finally realizes her run for Captaincy is somewhat ruining her mental health because of all the unhealthy ways she went about it, and is taking steps to take care of herself, yet people make this about Carina. She didn't even think of Carina when she was making that decision, Maya never thinks about her personal matters while at her job - she's not Andy - her work life and personal life is separate. Carina being at the station doing her own work does not mean Maya will think of her and base her own choices around Carina when she is at work.
Why do the trucks use their flashing lights when returning to station? That's not an emergency...

maya was the best captain the station had though...
She was a terrible captain being a coward never going into burning buildings. Even when her team needed her. The other captains would help but she wouldn't. Shed just stay outside and be a coward.
