This Is When A "Calorie Deficit" Won't Work

  • The sunk cost fallacy is a cognitive bias that leads individuals to make irrational decisions based on past investments, even when those investments are no longer recoverable or relevant to the current situation. The term "sunk cost" refers to any cost, whether monetary, time, or effort, that has already been incurred and cannot be recovered.
The fallacy arises when people allow their emotions and attachments to past investments to influence their decision-making, instead of objectively evaluating the current circumstances and future prospects. Essentially, they become fixated on recouping their sunk costs, often at the expense of better alternatives.
To understand the sunk cost fallacy, let's consider an example. Imagine you bought a non-refundable ticket to a concert, but as the concert day approaches, you realize you have other commitments and it's not worth attending. Despite knowing this, you might still feel inclined to go simply because you don't want to waste the money you spent on the ticket. By attending the concert, you are prioritizing the sunk cost over your current circumstances and preferences.
In a business context, the sunk cost fallacy can have significant consequences. For instance, a company might invest substantial resources into a failing project. Even if it becomes apparent that the project is unlikely to succeed or provide any substantial returns, decision-makers might be reluctant to abandon it because they have already invested so much time and money. This mindset prevents them from objectively evaluating the project's potential and considering alternative paths that may yield better outcomes.
There are several reasons why people fall prey to the sunk cost fallacy. Firstly, individuals often have a strong aversion to loss. They feel that if they abandon a project or decision, they will lose not only the resources already invested but also the potential gains they anticipated. This fear of loss can cloud judgment and lead to continued investment in futile endeavors.
Secondly, social and psychological factors can contribute to the sunk cost fallacy. People might feel embarrassed or perceive a sense of failure if they abandon a project that they previously championed. They may worry about how others will perceive them or fear being judged for making a "wasted" investment. These concerns about reputation and self-image can significantly impact decision-making.
Overcoming the sunk cost fallacy requires a shift in mindset and a focus on rational decision-making. Here are a few strategies to mitigate its effects:
    1. Recognize sunk costs: Understand that past investments are irrelevant to future decision-making. Separate the emotional attachment to sunk costs from the current situation.
    2. Evaluate alternatives objectively: Consider the current circumstances, prospects, and potential outcomes without being influenced by sunk costs. Analyze the situation as if no prior investment had been made.
    3. Seek external perspectives: Discuss the situation with colleagues, mentors, or trusted advisors who can provide an unbiased viewpoint. They can help you assess the situation objectively and challenge any irrational attachments to sunk costs.
    4. Learn from experience: Reflect on past instances where the sunk cost fallacy affected your decision-making. By understanding your own tendencies and biases, you can become more aware and avoid similar pitfalls in the future.
In conclusion, the sunk cost fallacy is a cognitive bias that leads people to make irrational decisions by prioritizing past investments that are no longer recoverable. It can manifest in various aspects of life, from personal choices to business decisions. Recognizing the fallacy and adopting rational decision-making strategies can help individuals and organizations avoid unnecessary losses and make more informed choices based on current circumstances and future prospects.

I paid over £1000 for a big sofa that filled out most of my living room. It was making me so depressed because I could barely move around due to the size of it. I didn’t want to get rid of it because it cost me so much money and I couldn’t sell it for some reason nobody wanted it. Eventually, I donated it and the feeling of absolute relief was unbelievable I felt completely free and was so glad to finally get rid of it.

Right now, work and relationship is great and my fitness is great. No coincidence. Cheers James 💪

Preach! I think this relates strongly to the quote you mentioned about “A person that loves to walk will walk further than a person that loves the destination.” I remember after I finished uni I researched a lot of very successful people who sold their businesses and achieved their career goals and 9/10 they all end up depressed because it wasn’t the goal that was making them happy, it was the fulfilment they gained from the process. Look at Notch who sold Minecraft, that guy spiralled into depression and drugs after he sold his life’s work to Microsoft.

Similar story for me but it took me a while longer due to being caught in the 'pension trap'. I hated my job but I needed to serve another 5 years in the forces to secure an immediate pension and substantial cash payout. I hated every second and my mental health suffered massively! Every day I would ask myself if the pain I was putting myself through was worth the financial reward at the end of it. Thankfully I made it with my mental health intact. With my gratuity I set up my PT business and I've never looked back. I earn less now than when I was in the forces but I am infinitely happier!

For years i worked in the hospitality business. Just before Covid, i herniated a disc at work, and then Covid hit and misery was at its highest. I could not create a routine to work out, or even work on some side stuff i always wanted to do because of the 12/16 hours shifts and the amount of physical work i had to do. Last thing i wanted to do after working a wedding and staying after midnight was to get up early and work out. So i quit, sat on my ass and got into IT. I knew about all the corporate stereotypes, negativity surrounding it, but wanted something with a normal schedule. Most of my close friends are in IT also, so i guess i was partially influenced by their experience. I now have a routine i can follow, i work out regularly, and my relationship with food definetly improved. Granted, i have been working this job for 8 months, but i feel way different than when i worked in hospitality. I totally get your idea behind this video, but at the same time, i have not reached the point where i start to dread coming to work, maybe this will happen to me too, who knows. 😅

Great advice, overeating is basically always a symptom. If you treat the symptom only, the disease comes back, and often with a vengeance (yo-yoing, gaining even more weight than before). I would add that in many cases therapy is a great tool, but you really have to make a conscious effort to share and be open to it. And yeah, try not to lose weight for the sake of losing weight, always have a good reason behind it. I lose weight, I can live longer. I lose weight, I will have the energy that's needed to hustle my true plans. Think of it as a tool that will allow you to get there, to maximize your chances to get what you really want out of your life.

This is absolutely true. I was fired from a job I hated a few months ago and have taken a break ever since - my weight has started dropping off with little to no effort and I've become a lot stronger because I have the mental capacity to make smart choices, to enjoy salads and not have to reach for convenient sugary snacks.
I also have a job lined up that is PERFECT for me and my lifestyle, where I know I can thrive and continue living my best life (while earning money again lol).
I really hope people see this and feel inspired to make these changes, because as you said they're life-changing for the better.

I couldn’t agree with you more. I was in a relationship that I felt isolated and just forced to stay in. (And a few other poor lifestyle choices) As a result I would constantly diet for a couple days and then binge eat. Never making any progress. When I finally had the balls to leave, everything in my life went up. Im currently in the best shape of my life, my work life is amazing and I can quite honestly say I am in the best place mentally and physically ever. This video is facts 👏🏼

I used to hit dabs before work and on my lunch breaks at my last job because it was the only way I could enjoy being at work. What you've said in this video is incredibly true. My current work isn't my dream job, but I enjoy the work enough to not be miserable all day and that enjoyment bleeds over into the rest of my days.

as someone who is just about to lose his job, i can confirm this. the fact, that circumstance chose for me makes me mentally free for which i could not do on my own.

I lost my job in 2006 - went through a disciplinary procedure and was devastated but it ended up being the best thing that ever happened to me - went self-emloyed/started my own business doing something I love - Never been happier and in the time since I was also able to quit smoking, drinking and recreational drugs and get fit. It's not rocket science.

It's not even just dissatisfaction with work or a relationship - so many causes or elements of negativity or difficulties in mental or emotional states can cause unhealthy relationships with food like this. It's so easily overlooked or dismissed, when it seems to be the most important factor
